How to Add Context (Ground Plane) in SketchUp
In SketchUp, adding a ground plane helps create a realistic setting for your model. Here’s how to do it:

Method 1: Use a Simple Rectangle as the Ground Plane
Select the Rectangle Tool (R) from the toolbar.
Click and drag on the ground level to create a large flat surface.
Use the Paint Bucket Tool (B) to apply a grass, concrete, or dirt texture from the Materials Panel.
Method 2: Import Terrain from Google Earth
Go to the File menu Geo-Location Add Location.
Search for your project site in the location window.
Click Select Region and adjust the area size.
Click Import – SketchUp will place the real-world terrain under your model.
Method 3: Use the Sandbox Tool for Custom Terrain
Enable the Sandbox Tools:
Go to Window Extension Warehouse Search Sandbox Tools.
Install and activate it.
Create a Ground Surface:
Go to Tools Sandbox From Scratch.
Set a grid size (e.g., 10’ x 10’ or 3m x 3m).
Modify the Terrain:
Use the Smoove Tool (T) to raise and lower parts of the ground.
Use Stamp or Drape to add roads or paths.
Method 4: Import a Ground Plane from 3D Warehouse
Go to Window 3D Warehouse.
Search for ground plane (grass, pavement, dirt, etc.).
Click Download and place it in your model.
Final Touch: Adjust Shadows & Textures
Enable shadows: Go to Window Shadows and adjust time & date for realism.
Apply realistic textures: Use Materials Editor to change colors or bump maps.
