00:00PTV Sports is back and for our sports banter, we have Romeo Mislam, Jaren Baniares, and Vince Onang, our athletes and coaches for Jump Rope.
00:17Good morning, gentlemen.
00:18Good morning.
00:19This morning is a bit interesting, right?
00:22Jump Rope.
00:23But first, how did you compete in Jump Rope?
00:29Alright, so, Jump Rope as a competitive sport, a lot of people don't know that it can be a competitive sport.
00:39So, basically, there are a lot of categories, but the main sport of Jump Rope is freestyle.
00:47So, you're going to do a routine, different tricks, different difficulty, and yeah, that's where the sport of Jump Rope revolves.
00:56I think last year, our Philippine Jump Rope team competed in China.
01:03How was your experience in the competition in China, Romeo?
01:06It was a super good experience.
01:09China was also super good.
01:13It was an open-minded competition.
01:17Of course, it was surprising that there are so many competitors from different countries.
01:24How about you, Jaren?
01:25Although it was a lot of pressure, but since we brought the Philippines, we still did everything.
01:31Can you tell us when you started competing?
01:36How did you discover that you can compete in this sport?
01:41So, I started in 2022, I think.
01:44Yeah.
01:45And then, I said, this is fun.
01:48I said, I'll try to become an athlete.
01:49And then, I continued.
01:51So, yeah.
01:52Yes.
01:53So, I started during the pandemic.
01:56So, at first, it was for health reasons.
02:00And then, I discovered that Jump Rope is really wide.
02:04And it really is competitive.
02:06So, I'm a competitive person.
02:08And it's really fun and competitive at the same time.
02:13So, I really enjoyed it.
02:15And you can really learn a lot when it comes to Jump Rope.
02:19How about you, Romeo?
02:20So, I started before the pandemic in 2020, in March.
02:24And then, I discovered Tricks 2021 in Luxor.
02:28So, our coach, Sir Ruben, and IJ, who is the Philippine head coach of PGRA, asked me if I wanted to be competitive or just for fun.
02:41So, I'm competitive too.
02:43I like challenges.
02:44And Jump Rope is really good.
02:46Because you can learn a lot from Jump Rope.
02:50And, of course, it improves your coordination, timing, and mental health.
02:53And it depends on something.
02:55Partner, you know, I remember this.
02:58During the pandemic, there were a lot of people who jumped on Jump Rope.
03:02All sports were shut down.
03:03All sports were shut down.
03:04You can do it indoor or outdoor.
03:06Even if it's virtual, you can do competitions because there's Jump Rope.
03:10I remember this because there are a lot of people doing tricks on TikTok.
03:13It's trending on Facebook, Facebook Reels, and IG Stories.
03:16A lot of people are jumping on Jump Rope.
03:19Were you one of those people?
03:21Yes, were you also posting on Jump Rope during the pandemic?
03:24Were you also trending on TikTok?
03:26Yes, actually, that's where Jump Rope really started.
03:30At first, it was just for fun.
03:32And the people online, they have a lot of fun.
03:38They're doing Jump Rope at the same time.
03:41Dancing on it.
03:42Some music and all.
03:43And then, we discovered that it became a sport in other countries.
03:49Like, the kids started as early as 4 or 5 years old to train.
03:56But in the Philippines, the level is not like that yet.
04:00So, it really started with Jump Dance.
04:06Dancing with the rope.
04:08Doing different fun tricks.
04:11Footworks and all.
04:12Actually, the community of Jump Rope is really nice.
04:15I remember this, partner.
04:16There are a lot of people.
04:17If it's trending now, Jump Rope was really popular before.
04:23Up until now, there are still a lot of people.
04:26Actually, I also tried.
04:29You just went there?
04:31Actually, I'm a lazy person.
04:36I discovered that I can't jump.
04:39I don't have to jump anymore.
04:42It's called rope flow.
04:44Yes, rope flow.
04:46It's like a jump rope, but it's not a jump.
04:48You can't jump.
04:50You don't have to jump too high?
04:51You don't have to jump.
04:52Even if it's just a towel, you're still like that.
04:55That's scary.
04:56Search for teammates, rope flow.
04:59Maybe next time, we'll interview the rope flow lady.
05:03Next week, I'll sample Paolo Salamat.
05:06Jump Rope is interesting.
05:08There are a lot of sports that have evolved.
05:11But going back to the question,
05:14can you share with us how you train?
05:19Because I saw here that there are three of you.
05:24There are two of you.
05:25It's like a modern jump rope.
05:26It's a double touch.
05:27Yes.
05:28It's also a competition.
05:31There's a team and a pair of double touch.
05:35And you're not just standing.
05:38There's also a trick.
05:40It's like you're pushing up.
05:42It's not easy.
05:43It's like a modern jump rope.
05:46There are a lot of people involved.
05:53In jump rope, you can dance.
05:55But at the same time, you can do gymnastics.
05:57There are a lot of areas that you can hit.
06:03There are many types of pillars.
06:05Power, footwork, releases.
06:08In rope flow, it's like controlling the rope.
06:12Even if you're not jumping, you're controlling the rope.
06:14And then we have multiples.
06:17I think those are the double unders, triple unders.
06:22There are quads.
06:24Four rotations in one jump.
06:34Since you mentioned that you're training different kinds of tricks.
06:39Of course, there are different divisions.
06:41There are single spheres.
06:42What are your preparations for this year?
06:44Since last year, you came from China.
06:46For this year, what are the upcoming competitions for jump rope?
06:49This July 26 to August 3.
06:52There's IGRU, which is International Jump Rope Committee.
06:55There's IOT, which is International Open Tournament,
07:00and World Open Tournament.
07:02Where will it be held?
07:03It will be held in Japan, in Kurtsukawasari.
07:06It's the same venue as last year.
07:09Maybe we'll be invited.
07:11Maybe we'll be invited to a jump rope competition.
07:13Jaren, how many years have you been joining jump rope?
07:18What's the most important thing for you in jump rope?
07:21Health-wise, and of course, being an athlete.
07:24For me, it boosted my confidence.
07:26Since they told me,
07:28you're fat, you can't do this, you can't do that.
07:30That's when I realized that I can do it.
07:34That's when my confidence boosted.
07:36For servants, you've mentioned earlier that
07:39this was just for health purposes before for you.
07:43How did this become healthy for you?
07:49During the pandemic, I grew up.
07:53Of course, there were no activities, just eating.
07:57It's an intense workout.
08:02It's more intense than running.
08:04It can burn a lot of calories.
08:07It helped me a lot.
08:09First, I lost weight.
08:13Second, mentally.
08:15Third, my emotions changed.
08:21My mood changed.
08:23Overall, holistically, it can help you.
08:27Physically and mentally?
08:28Yes.
08:29For Sir Romeo.
08:31Sir Romeo, how did this jump rope help you?
08:35Since it's an intense cardio,
08:37it can improve your coordination, timing,
08:41presence of mind,
08:43picking up things,
08:45your choreography,
08:47and your confidence.
08:49I don't know how to dance,
08:51but with the jump rope, I can dance.
08:54With the two left feet on the jump rope.
08:58You can dance.
09:01If you want to challenge yourself,
09:05and get rid of your stress,
09:07use the jump rope.
09:08Let's talk about your competitions.
09:11Can you tell us about your upcoming competitions,
09:14tournaments, preparations,
09:16and what are you aiming for?
09:21For the Philippines,
09:25there's a competition called Jump Dance.
09:28I think it's the third year now.
09:31It's good for beginners.
09:35Everyone is welcome.
09:38If you want to try jump rope as a sport,
09:42it's a perfect opportunity.
09:44I think it's going to be in May.
09:46It's the national competition here in the Philippines.
09:50Technically, it's a group.
09:54Different groups.
09:56You're going to dance with the rope,
09:59with the music and all.

10:03there's IGRU.
