00:00How scenes of mass protests in Greece sparked a deluge of misinformation.
00:09This video shows a recent protest in the Greek capital of Athens.
00:13It happened on the second anniversary of a train crash that left 57 dead, many of them students.
00:21Protesters were demanding justice and accountability for those victims.
00:26Two years after the tragedy, the judicial probe has still not been completed.
00:31Opposition parties have accused the government of a cover-up.
00:35And the protests led to a vote of no confidence in the government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis last Friday, which he survived.
00:44But the striking videos have been used in a raft of misleading social media posts, which claim it was a protest against irregular migration.
00:54This post, for example, claims demonstrators were calling on the European Union to stop the invasion of migrants and that they would march all the way to Brussels to make their demands.
01:05Another post falsely claims that more than 500 migrants arrive in Greece irregularly every day.
01:13We checked the claim against data provided by the International Organization for Migration and found that, for example, over the last week,
01:21only an estimated 40 migrants arrived in Greece, proving that the claim is false.
01:28The posts have been amplified by bot-like accounts suggesting a coordinated misinformation campaign.
01:35As is often the case in such engineered campaigns, we saw the claims circulating in several languages and across platforms.
