Tyler Forness discusses the Minnesota Vikings decision to sign Indianapolis Colts center Ryan Kelly to a two-year, $18 million deal.
Transcript
00:00Minnesota Vikings had a dire need on the interior of offensive line, and they've made a move to fortify it
00:05But was it the right one?
00:09The minnesota vikings needed to fix the interior of the offensive line and they finally made a move
00:16Six hours into free agency the minnesota vikings agreed to terms with former four-time pro bowl center
00:21Ryan kelly formerly of the indianapolis colts on a two-year deal worth 18 million dollars
00:27What's really intriguing about the addition of ryan kelly is well
00:31It's a four-time pro bowler. He's a big boy
00:34He's not going to falter and get forklifted in pass protection
00:38It's supposedly going to fortify what the minnesota vikings are trying to do when it comes to the passing game
00:44And theoretically that should translate into good run blocking as well
00:48It also means garrett bradbury is probably out of a job, but is it the right decision?
00:53We know that garrett bradbury has had his struggles he's had his struggles his entire minnesota vikings career
00:58When he was selected 18th overall in the 2019 nfl draft the theory was this guy is a finished product
01:04He's going to be ready to go from day one and you're going to be able to have that
01:07Plug and play guy and you don't have to worry about it. Well
01:11Didn't exactly manifest the way they wanted to and then he signed a three-year 15.75 million dollar contract
01:17After his fifth year option was not extended
01:20Sorry exercised
01:23He's been fine
01:24But he still has problems
01:26And I think one of the things that could really help bradbury is having great guards next to him, but they got the center instead
01:32So bradbury will save over three million dollars on the salary cap if they end up releasing him or he could just stay as a backup
01:39Because one of the what's one of the big issues of brian kelly missing football games
01:44Kelly had even talked about retirement. There were those rumors going around. He was considered retiring. Well, guess what?
01:50He's about to return for his 10th overall season after being
01:54the 18th pick in the
01:562016
01:57NFL draft by the annapolis colts out of alabama
02:01But in his nine seasons, he's only played three full seasons including missing a whopping
02:05seven games last season
02:08He's missed time in six of his nine seasons
02:12So why won't that?
02:13Happen this time
02:15Are the vikings medical staff that going to be that confident that they can keep him healthy?
02:19Are they that confident that it was just what the colts were doing when it came to their own medical staff?
02:25That's a tough one to parse out. We can't give you those answers, but I can tell you this
02:30They wouldn't have agreed to the deal if they didn't feel comfortable enough with the medical information that they had
02:35That's how this vikings team works
02:37They understand what's going on and they have a plan for everybody
02:41Now
02:43Kelly according to colts insiders that I spoke with ahead of this video
02:47He has not
02:49Got really fluid hips anymore and he struggles to climb the second level. I was told he does not get to the second level anymore
02:55Well, is that going to be a problem?
02:57It very well could be because of how much the vikings like running zone
03:01If you can't move laterally like that, how's that going to impact the run game?
03:04We saw the run game crater when you prioritize pass protection with dalton reisner
03:08So we'll do the same with
03:11kelly instead of bradbury
03:13There are a lot of questions still to ask about this move
03:16But make no mistake. They are living up to their word and wanting to fortify the interior of the offensive line
03:22Will this specific move work?
03:24Time will tell
03:26But hey, they're making a real effort and it's refreshing
