00:00When we got into that water, I nailed Scott so hard in his testicles
00:07that I felt his body just crumble.
00:10It was like one of those moments where I was like,
00:12oh my God, I just ruined his life.
00:16Hi, I'm Kate Hudson, and today we're going to be watching
00:19scenes from projects throughout my career.
00:22So let's go.
00:30We walked into the party like you were walking on to a yacht.
00:44You had your hat pulled down real strategically over one eye.
00:49You had a scarf, I think it was apricot.
00:51Strategically tiptoe one eye.
00:53You had one eye in the mirror.
00:55Just the fact that Carly Simon allowed us to just butcher her song on a stage.
01:03The fact that Carly is so cool that she's like,
01:06sure, you know what, go for it.
01:08Barry, you're so bad.
01:11Probably think this song is about you, don't you, don't you?
01:16Tone deaf and drunk is not a good combination.
01:18It was truly an amazing experience, and Matthew just brought it.
01:22And he always does.
01:23And I think without ego and without any sort of, any of it,
01:28he just brings so much amazing energy to everything he does.
01:32With Matthew and I, it's just a very similar type of joie de vivre.
01:37We love life.
01:39We lead with energy.
01:40Very competitive by nature.
01:42We're competitive with each other.
01:44Very flirtatious.
01:46Not afraid to be flirtatious.
01:47I think there's just a similar energy that somehow allowed us
01:53to be able to really connect on screen and fall in love.
01:58It's like you have great loves of your life.
02:00And then as actresses, I think you have great loves in your work.
02:05And he's one of my great loves, you know?
02:08And I think that just is something that happens when you meet
02:12and you feel that chemistry is just sort of an energetic thing.
02:16And great producers can see that right away.
02:21I feel really lucky that I got to experience that with someone
02:25as talented and as fun as Matthew.
02:28You arrogant, backstabbing jerk!
02:30There's that dress.
02:31I mean, I think of Karen Patch, our costume designer.
02:38Time out!
02:40What?
02:41Look, please, just give me the necklace.
02:43Then you guys can go on and kill each other.
02:45And then look at that diamond.
02:46That's real.
02:48That was a real diamond.
02:49We had bodyguards and everything.
02:51When that would go on, oh my gosh, I was so excited.
03:01Who are you with?
03:03Me?
03:04I'm with myself.
03:06No, who are you with?
03:07What band?
03:08Oh, I'm here to interview Black Sabbath.
03:12I'm a journalist.
03:13I'm not a, you know.
03:16You're not a what?
03:18Oh my god, I'm such a baby.
03:21I haven't seen this in a while.
03:23Not a groupie.
03:26Groupies sleep with rock stars because they want
03:28to be near someone famous.
03:31We're here because of the music.
03:32We are band-aids.
03:34So this whole section, one day, we were there for like two
03:38weeks on this ramp.
03:40And I remember John Toll, the DP, at one point,
03:45we were so tired.
03:46We'd been working, and it was nights.
03:48And he just goes, the ramp, the miniseries.
03:52We had so much on that ramp.
03:54I also really sprained my ankle on that because I was
03:57wearing these really high platforms.
03:59And I remember thinking, like, I was so young.
04:02And I was like, I am not going to show anyone how much pain
04:07I'm in.
04:08I was in so much pain.
04:09They're like, you need to take a break.
04:10It's OK.
04:11I'm like, nope.
04:12I'm not going to show anyone how much pain I'm in.
04:15My ankle was like out to here.
04:17I was like, no, I'm good.
04:18There's a great moment at the end of this.
04:22I say, hey, you want to come to Morocco with me?
04:25And he says, yes.
04:28Yeah, yeah.
04:30You sure?
04:32Ask me again.
04:34Do you want to come?
04:35That ask me again was actually him asking me to ask him again
04:40the line because he felt like he didn't get the line right.
04:42And it was just such an amazing moment.
04:45And the fact that Cameron used that, well, I'll always remember
04:48that because it just showed like Patrick's the purity of this.
04:54It was his first film.
04:56And yeah, I mean, this was the best.
04:58I was such a huge Cameron Crowe fan.
05:00I mean, singles, Say Anything, Jerry Maguire,
05:04like my favorite kinds of film.
05:07And when I knew he was doing this movie, I was like,
05:09I'll do anything.
05:10And he was looking for all girls around that were 19, 20.
05:15And I was cast as his William's sister.
05:18I was so excited.
05:19But then when the cast fell out, it was Brad Pitt at the time
05:23and Sarah Pauly.
05:25And then it just sort of fell apart.
05:26I was like the only one cast.
05:29And Cameron's like, don't leave me.
05:31I was like, oh my God, are you kidding?
05:34Never.
05:34But can I audition for Penny Lane?
05:36And he really didn't want me to at the time
05:40because he was so hell-bent on me as, you know,
05:43he just saw me as the sister Anita.
05:46But then I just kept begging.
05:49And he brought me back like a thousand times.
05:52Finally, it was really Gail, the casting director,
05:55if I'm saying this correctly.
05:57And my friend was like, Cameron, it's Kate.
05:59To get a part like that was like, what?
06:02And yeah, I think I cried.
06:04I'm pretty sure I cried.
06:06I do cry a lot.
06:07But I think I pretty much lost it.
06:15I have to go home.
06:22You are home.
06:23I was thinking about this the other day,
06:25that there's just certain songs that sort of break out
06:28of some of the movies that I've been in,
06:30like Tiny Dancer and You're So Vain.
06:32And I feel really lucky to have these amazing musicians
06:38and writers sort of lend us these songs.
06:41And then just being a part of them in film history
06:45is like really cool, you know, when you step outside
06:48and look in, it's like, oh, how cool is that?
06:50I remember a therapist said to me once,
06:52I was like, I couldn't figure out what I was feeling.
06:54And I was like, not that long ago.
06:55And I was like, God, I don't know.
06:56I just feel like, oh God, I just, I'm like, I can't,
07:00how do I put this into words?
07:02And he looked at me, he goes, you just
07:03want to get back on the bus.
07:06I was like, yes, I just want to get back on the bus.
07:10I do have that nomadic, music-loving,
07:15kind of traveling spirit that loves
07:18to disappear in that world.
07:20So yeah, she always lives in me a little bit, for sure.
07:32I had to do this scene where, which was really hard,
07:35because I had a bikini scene where I have to like strut out
07:38in this outfit, and it's written like a strut, you know?
07:41I was like, oh, oh God, I'm going to be in Greece.
07:45And I like, you know, when you have to do that,
07:47like you can't drink for like a good two to three weeks.
07:50So I was like, how am I going to be in Greece?
07:52And I had like rosé at least like once.
07:55It's going to be hard.
07:56It's going to test.
07:57It's going to be like, I don't know,
07:58it's going to be like, I don't know,
08:00it's going to be hard.
08:01It's going to test.
08:02It's going to test my discipline.
08:04But I did it.
08:05I did it.
08:06I was like, I'm going to get there,
08:09and then it's all going to go out the window.
08:11And that's what I did.
08:13And I, look, to be honest, I love to work out.
08:15I love it.
08:16It's one of my favorite things to do.
08:17I love strength training.
08:19That's where it really started, was for that movie,
08:22is the first time I really did strength training.
08:24And it like changed my life.
08:26So there's that.
08:27And you know what?
08:29I really enjoyed strutting in that bathing suit.
08:31That's an awesome bathing suit.
08:32Bertie, you have to tell him.
08:35You got to tell him.
08:36Listen to me.
08:36I'm serious.
08:37You got to, you just, you just got to go beg.
08:40Okay.
08:40God.
08:41When he goes to his room, just follow him
08:42and then just do it.
08:43I will take care of him.
08:45Don't worry.
08:46Jess.
08:47Oh my God.
08:47Maddie.
08:48Oh, I love everybody so much.
08:50It's always nerve wracking to play someone
08:53that is just so, has no filter
08:58and is just totally town deaf
09:01and ground them in some way
09:04so that you kind of love them
09:08even though they're just like not very good people.
09:13Andy.
09:15Hi.
09:17Wow.
09:18How long has it been?
09:20Since the trial.
09:21So a few months.
09:23The trial.
09:24That was not fun.
09:25I mean, for all of us, for anybody, right, Peg?
09:29Right?
09:30I'm uncomfortable.
09:30I'm going to go for a swim.
09:32In comedy, you really need to know who that person is,
09:36like the depths of them for it to be funny.
09:39For me, Bertie was really sad.
09:42I feel like she only knew how to listen to every third word.
09:45So like she never really listened to anybody.
09:48And honestly, I mean, with Jenny, our costume designer,
09:52working with costume and Bertie really brought it to another level.
09:57She's just extra.
09:59She just needs to be validated.
10:01She just wants to be loved.
10:03And she'll go so far that she just can become completely tone deaf.
10:08She just, it's like she doesn't exist in the world that's happening right now.
10:12And working with a writer like Ryan, you know, it's like it makes it so seamless.
10:17You're like, oh, he just wrote, Bertie was just so on the page.
10:21Truly, Bertie was one of my favorite characters I've ever played.
10:26I wish we could do an offshoot of Bertie.
10:28You know, it's like I never wanted Bertie to end.
10:31We have this chat group called The Green Room,
10:34which is where we get to connect with each other.
10:38And it's the best.
10:40I mean, we still talk on it.
10:42We were all very jealous as the first Knives Out was jealous of the second Knives Out.
10:48When I saw the little tease, I was like, hmm, I feel really left out.
10:55And then that's when, you know, The Green Room starts kind of going like,
10:59oh, really?
11:00Oh, here we go.
11:01Like, it wasn't nearly as fun as Grace.
11:03Daniel Craig every day, not too bad.
11:07Catherine Hahn, I got to have a reunion with Catherine.
11:11Ed Word, who was so great.
11:13I just had this dream that maybe we'll all get to be in one together one day.
11:18Maybe all of the characters will get to come back.
11:21That's my manifestation.
11:30Oh, I'm surprised I haven't been, you know, sent into my therapist's office.
11:34That's what I've heard.
11:35T-U-F-F.
11:36You all heard me on the phone the other day,
11:37talking to the guy who's messed up my centerpieces.
11:40Oh, gosh.
11:40It was unbelievable.
11:41It's like one thing after another.
11:42Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:43Snowballs.
11:44Listen, can I get a little bit more low light?
11:46I'm surprised.
11:48You know, it's like I love improv.
11:50It was always my favorite thing growing up.
11:53And when you know your character so well, you can just keep talking.
11:56I just keep talking.
11:57Anyway, when I'm watching this, I'm like, oh, none of this was written.
12:00Like, I forgot all about this.
12:02And then this is, I, look, I loved producing this movie.
12:07This was actually one of the more challenging experiences I've had
12:13because I set out to make a very rated R, irreverent comedy.
12:18Like Bridesmaids, a little more raunchy.
12:21And the script we had, written by Casey and June, was rated R.
12:26It went through a series of things.
12:27And as it does and as you do, five years down the road,
12:31someone else picked up the script.
12:33And they just wanted it to be a little bit more PG.
12:37And we kind of felt like the little engine that could.
12:40And I knew, I was like, you've got a multi-billion dollar industry.
12:45And women can laugh at themselves.
12:47I don't think we should ever forget that women, you know,
12:50we know how to laugh at ourselves.
12:52And we can be raunchy too.
12:54And sometimes we need to go there.
13:00Oh, my God.
13:02Oh, my God.
13:03Is it good?
13:04Great.
13:06This is, my hair is blue.
13:08I mean, this is something I hear all the time.
13:10People yell this out at me on the street.
13:13This was such a wonderful experience.
13:16And I loved every second of it.
13:19My hair's blue!
13:21It's blue!
13:22In the process of having to take out some of the really hilarious scenes
13:27that were a little too naughty, my producing partner and I, Julie Yoren,
13:31I feel like we really kind of made this great buddy love story,
13:35like comedy, dramedy, where we got to make fun of the intensity that we have
13:41when we're going to get married and the bigness of that day
13:43and sometimes forget that it's really about the people that we love.
13:48You know, I always say, like, what would be the sequel to Bride Wars?
13:51Annie and I had just so much fun and were able to get cozy and laugh with each other.
13:58And it was a really wonderful experience.
14:06Hey, hey, hey!
14:08Nobody shoves Ness as much as we may want to!
14:10No, hold on, babe.
14:11I got this.
14:12Do me a favor.
14:12Fuck you, okay?
14:13Stop it right now!
14:14Stop!
14:15Stop it!
14:16No!
14:18Love these guys.
14:19I love them.
14:24Ow!
14:25Ow!
14:32It was really late at night.
14:34It was cold.
14:36The pool was, thank God they made it like a jacuzzi because it was really cold outside.
14:40But when we got into that water, I nailed Scott so hard in his testicles
14:49that I felt his body just crumble.
14:52It was like one of those moments where I was like,
14:54oh my God, I just ruined his life.
14:58It was so bad that I knew it.
15:00And I heard him.
15:04I audibly heard it under the water.
15:08And it's never happened to me in my career where I really, like, really hurt somebody.
15:12But for some reason, because it was Scott, I felt okay about it.
15:20Oh, for God's sake, she's gonna kill him.
15:27I wish we had another shot on it.
15:29One of the things in the edit, I was like,
15:30do we have a close-up of him in a different direction?
15:33Because he did something that was so funny.
15:36Drew, I hope we get to do a season two because his physicality,
15:41he's one of the great comedians.
15:43He's got incredible physicality.
15:45We only really touched on it in this.
15:47And he does amazing work in this show, Running Point.
15:50You've got some of the great comedic minds just throwing line after line at you.
15:59It was so much fun.
16:01Mindy Kaling wrote an absolute, just great show,
16:06loosely based on Jeannie Busses,
16:08who is the president and owner of the Lakers, her life story.
16:12But it's really about this family dynamic and how messed up we are.
16:16And none of us are really capable of really emotionally figuring out our lives.
16:20And yet we have to run this big franchise.
16:24And it just was such a blast.
16:25Laughter is healing.
16:26So I hope this is that for some people.
16:35Okay, thank you for watching.
