ICC takes Duterte into custody to face murder charges for drug war killings
Former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte was taken into custody by the International Criminal Court on Wednesday, March 12, following his arrest in Manila on murder charges linked to his "war on drugs" in which thousands of purported dealers and users were killed.
The ICC said in a written statement Duterte was "surrendered to the custody of the International Criminal Court. He was arrested by the authorities of the Republic of the Philippines . . . for charges of murder as a crime against humanity."
The 79-year-old arrived at Rotterdam airport on a chartered plane earlier on Wednesday. He will be brought before an ICC judge in The Hague in the coming days for an initial appearance, the statement said. He was transferred to a detention unit on the Dutch coast. The ICC arrest warrant says that as president, Duterte created, funded and armed the death squads that carried out murders of purported drug users and dealers.

00:00The office has been investigating the situation of the Philippines for some time
00:04in relation to the so-called war on drugs.
00:07Last month, under the supervision of Deputy Prosecutor Manjay Niang,
00:12the team submitted a warrant application to the judges of the pretrial chamber.
00:19The judges have issued that warrant and it's been executed.
00:23And in issuing the warrant, the judges have found reasonable grounds to believe
00:28that Mr. Duterte has committed the crime of murder
00:36as the founder, as the head of the so-called Davao death squad,
00:41as the mayor of Davao city, and then later as the president of the Philippines
00:47between 2011 and 2019.
