00:00I'm going to say this at risk of my job, Kelly, but what President Trump is doing is insane.

00:05It is absolutely insane.

00:06It is about the eighth reason we've had for the tariffs.

00:10And now he's saying he's putting 50 percent tariffs on Canada unless they agree to become

00:15the 51st state.

00:17That is insane.

00:18There is just no other way of describing it.

00:20And the trouble, Kelly, is that it shows there are no bounds around President Trump.

00:26This is very different from the first administration, where there were people around him who seemed

00:30to, I don't know what the word is, but smooth over some of the edges now.

00:35And the other thing that's not talked about, Kelly, is what's going on within the administration

00:39in terms of how they're treating the Constitution and laws.

00:42I think all of that is bad for the attraction of capital.

00:46And the gentleman from Bridgewater is 100 percent right.

00:48We need massive amounts of capital if we want to have, fund our deficits, pay for the things

00:53we want to pay for, sell our bonds and have high stock prices.

00:57And it seems as if this administration is doing everything it can to chase foreign capital

01:01away.

01:02Well, and we could go into the strategy of the insanity as a strategy in terms of our

01:06trade.

01:07Insanity is not a strategy.

01:08I'm sorry.

01:09I'm with you, Kelly.

01:10And try to look for silver linings.

01:11I'm a sunny person.

01:12Not silver linings.

01:13Tactics.

01:14Some.

01:15Well, some explanation for this other than insanity.

01:17I'm ready to accept it if you can come up with one.

01:20That was CNBC senior economics reporter Steve Leesman injecting a desperately needed dose

01:24of reality into the political zeitgeist, wherein Trump is now suggesting that the only way

01:29he'll remove the crippling tariffs on Canada, crippling for Canada and the United States,

01:33to be clear, is if they decide to surrender their sovereignty and get annexed by the U.S.

01:38I mean, I'm sorry, but what the fuck are we doing here?

01:42Even Jim Cramer, another CNBC host and oftentimes ally of Donald Trump, pushed back.

01:47I don't think we'll have a recession.

01:49Like I said, it's manufactured.

01:50It's manufactured.

01:51Well, that doesn't mean there won't be.

01:52I'm not sure.

01:53I understand.

01:54Oh, no.

01:55Manufactured easily cause recession.

01:56Absolutely.

01:57I don't.

01:58You know, I'm not I'm not saying that manufactured means not going to happen.

02:01Right.

02:02I'm saying manufactured is that you can make it happen.

02:04And when you get angry and when you kind of lose your temper and you get mad instead of

02:10like the way shot shinebombs handle it in Mexico, it gets people nervous and upset.

02:14They want the president to be a little happier.

02:17You know, there's nothing wrong being happy.

02:19You can be tough as nails and be happy.

02:21But right now, it just feels like, oh, we're going to just screw every people been screwing

02:26us for years and we're going to fight back, which is true.

02:28It's absolutely true.

02:29But you got to explain it very calmly and empirically how we're being hurt by an Italy

02:33or being hurt by Germany.

02:34And this is going to stop and we're going to make it stop.

02:37And then don't scream at those countries that it doesn't work.

02:41It doesn't work.

02:42It doesn't work because they know that they can stand their ground.

02:46You tell them, look, I am going to scream at you, help us, help us and we'll help you.

02:55People are scared.

02:56You don't scare people.

02:57You don't scare, it's a wrong call.

03:01It's all message.

03:02People are scared.

03:04In other words, the only reason that we'd fall into a recession is if Trump tips us

03:08into one.

03:09And yet, because Trump issues the clarion call, his dutiful little minions jump on board.

03:14Here's his press secretary, Carolyn Leavitt, willing to sacrifice our entire alliance with

03:19Canada, our neighbor and closest ally, all in deference to this unhinged scheme by Trump.

03:24I wonder, does this administration still consider Canada to be a close ally of the United States?

03:30Well, I think Canada is a neighbor.

03:34They are a partner.

03:35They have always been an ally.

03:37Perhaps they are becoming a competitor now.

03:39But as the president also laid out in his Truth Social post today, he believes that

03:43Canadians would benefit greatly from becoming the 51st state of the United States of America.

03:49And I actually looked into some of the research about the cost of living in Canada, and the

03:54cost of living is much higher than it is here in the United States of America.

03:58The average cost of a home in Canada is much higher.

04:01In Quebec, the highest tax rate for an income of $150,000 or more is 53.3 percent, more

04:08than half of Canadians' incomes they are being taxed on.

04:11So the president has made it clear that he believes Canadians would be better served

04:15economically, militarily, if they were to become the 51st state of the United States of America.

04:22Imagine being so willing to throw away our closest and most important alliance, all because

04:26Trump's ego is so inflated that he needs to do things to bolster his legacy.

04:31He isn't going to help anyone other than one person in his desperation to garner attention for himself.

04:37And let's be clear, just because Trump is deluded enough into thinking that this strategy

04:40is going to work doesn't mean Canada is going to suspend reality for him.

04:45You don't gain anything by pandering to a madman.

04:47And one Canadian leader, Premier of Ontario Doug Ford, made that abundantly clear.

04:52What it's done, it's united the whole country, and the patriotism is running wild across

04:57the country, the likes I've never seen before in my entire life.

05:02We'll never become the 51st state.

05:05Canada's not for sale.

05:07And we want a great trading partner.

05:10We had the greatest neighbours in the world, the US, and it's not the American people.

05:14They didn't vote President Trump in on this type of mandate.

05:19He had a mandate to lower inflation, lower cost of living, create more jobs, and has

05:25backfired on them.

05:27Inflation is going up.

05:28Jobs will be lost.

05:30He's taking more money out of Americans' pockets.

05:35For what reason?

05:36We're still trying to figure this out.

05:38Let's sit down at the table and negotiate this deal.

05:42If there's things he doesn't like, then we sit down and we have a conversation.

05:47But just going tit for tat, back and forth, all it does is hurt Americans.

05:52In fact, Ford went on to explain what even the Republicans are saying about this behind

05:56closed doors.

05:57It's not the American people.

05:58It's not even the Republicans I speak to.

06:02And behind closed doors, all of them are saying this is crazy, what he's doing.

06:07CEOs of the largest Fortune 500 companies are telling him, this does not work.

06:13Protectionism doesn't work.

06:15Do we want a fair deal?

06:16Absolutely.

06:17And the only way you get a fair deal is by sitting at the table across from each other

06:22and let's hash this out and be stronger together.

06:25We have more problems, more foes around the world than we need.

06:32We want to focus on our friends.

06:34United we stand, divided we fall.

06:37And again, we want to be united with our greatest friends and allies.

06:41That it's crazy, that everybody knows it's crazy, that elected officials know it's crazy

06:45and business leaders know it's crazy and CEOs know it's crazy.

06:49The problem is the right's complete unwillingness to speak out publicly against Trump for fear

06:54of retribution.

06:55This is a party that beats its chest as the alphas, right?

06:58As the tough guys, the straight talkers and no bullshitters.

07:02But God forbid they say one ill word of the God King, even as he plunges this country

07:06and their political fortunes, by the way, deep into the throes of disrepair.

07:11We are literally on the verge of a recession and yet still these Republicans are too chicken

07:16shit to find their tongues.

07:18Anyway, where was I?

07:19Oh right, Republicans are the alphas.

07:22Got it.

07:23So look, good on Steve Leesman for doing what so few Republicans are willing to do and that

07:27is to speak out.

07:28This lunacy only becomes normal if we normalize it.

07:31I'm not willing to do that, Canada isn't willing to do that, Americans aren't willing to do

07:35that, but Republican officials do it at their own peril and they are going to learn in short

07:40order that political gravity does indeed exist and that if this is the wagon they want to

07:45hitch themselves to, that's their prerogative, but it's very likely not going to have the

07:49outcome that they're hoping for.
