00:00I'm Colby Covington, former Oregon State University alumni, two-time Pac-10 champion, and University of All-American.
00:07Yeah, dude, after every match, you know, there's never, you know, I'm not happy with any performance, there's always things I can do better, and this isn't the gold Pac-10 championship, it's one-second gold, but the main goal is the national title, and that's what I'm really, that's the ultimate goal, and that's what I'm really training for.
00:37I'm currently chasing my dreams, living in South Florida, I fight for the UFC, I do half my training camps here at Oregon State University with the wrestling team, and then I go back out to South Florida with the American Top Team and finish out my training camps out there, getting ready for my next fight.
01:07Oregon State University is home for me, you know, I love to come back in the college wrestling atmosphere, just being around coaches like Zaleski and Steiner and Roberts, you know, you just, it gets so much out of me, you know, I feel like I'm getting the best training of my life here because, you know, they're able to get things out of me just by being there, they don't have to say anything, just their presence, you know, it just, it makes me just so motivated, and I'm very hungry to bring home a UFC title back to Corvallis.
01:33I just want to thank everybody for coming out tonight, I'm nervous, I know it's the first one, but I guess it's how the world is, it's a good experience, but thanks to all my friends, all my family, my mom, American Top Team, the boys, the boys, I just want to thank Chris Myers, Westside Iron, the best company in the United States. 01:52Oregon State Wrestling is unlike any other school that I've ever been to, and I've wrestled at a lot of schools, you know, the atmosphere is one of a kind, and, you know, it's lit the fire under me to make me a hungry competitor, you know, when I wanted to quit in college, Zaleski was able to get it out of me so I could be a D1 All-American, and now I'm living my UFC dreams, chasing a UFC world title, and that's a lot of credit to Oregon State Wrestling and everything that they do here.
02:53I've been calling it to be in the UFC for a long time, for a couple years, you know, while I was down at American Top Team, so, you know, I was grateful to get the opportunity and to do so, it doesn't matter where it's at, you know, it was great to go to China, but it was definitely a different experience, so, you know, it was great, you know, I can't really put into words what it felt like, you know, but, you know, it's the first of many.
03:12Do you have any thoughts on the rivalry with Glenn Robinson?
03:15You know, I was there for most of the taping of the show, so I haven't really been watching it, you know, I don't like to get into the dramatics about the fighting, you know, I came here to get a belt, you know, so I don't want to really, you know, worry about the drama, I just want to worry about getting better as a fighter each day of the fight.
03:30What's up, man, that's what my coach over here, Mike Brown, put the other day, he put a picture of me in a robe where I didn't really think about it until then, you know, but, you know, it's kind of weird, you know, I went to China, fought a Chinese, and now I'm in Brazil fighting a Brazilian, you know, and, you know, but I'm just happy I have a job, you know, I'm grateful to fight for the UFC, you know, I can't thank the UFC enough for that, you know, so, you know, it doesn't matter if I'm the villain or a good guy, you know, I'm just, I'm here to win fights.
03:53I was definitely surprised, I thought I was in the controlling position, I thought I had a double leg and I was going to come out the back, but then he got it from the side, it was very tight, you know, but, you know, it's just a testament to my will, you know, you're going to have to put me to sleep in there, it's going to take more than a little choke to get me to go away, you know, I'm going to fight through every position hard, and, you know, you're going to have to put me to sleep in there.
04:14I'm frustrated with that, you know, I want to be high up on the card because I want to show that, you know, I'm an exciting fighter, you know, and I think they're going to find that out after this performance, that they're not going to want to put me on fight pass anymore because I come to finish and I come to be impressive, so, hopefully after this fight, you know, they'll reconsider and start putting me on main cards.
04:30I was a headbutt, it was an inadvertent headbutt in the third round, I came up and I was going down to throw an elbow, and as soon as I was going down to throw an elbow, he was bracing up to come up to me and we just clashed heads, so I was a headbutt.
04:43I mean, were you wobbled for a second there?
04:45No, I wasn't wobbled at all, but I noticed it started bleeding real quick and I noticed it was gashing, you know, it's unfortunate.
04:51I didn't really get a chance to study him, you know, we tried to look up a couple films here while we were here, but I guess the fight pass thing, you're not allowed to look up the Brazilian things, or some, I don't know, there was some discrepancy, but, you know, I don't know too much about him, I know he's a strong fighter, he's a jiu-jitsu guy, and, you know, he comes from a good camp, good guys that he trains with, you know, so, you know, I expect it to be, you know, a tough fight.
05:12You know, he's going to want to put on a good show in front of his home country, you know, so that's going to give him a lot of motivation, so, you know, I'm just, you know, I'm prepared for anything, but I'm going to implement my game plan, I'm not going to worry about what he's going to do.
05:22Is that harder as you to find motivation and such?
05:26Yeah, it's definitely harder, man, it's like every week in wrestling season you're preparing all the time because you know you're going to have a meet, meet, meet, and you're just always preparing for these certain things.
05:34Now it's you're peaking for one event, usually like three or four, max five a year, so it's such a different mindset getting ready for it, so I'm still trying to find that even keel and really make sure I'm making my body and my mind peak because you have to get your body in line.
05:48Your body can be ready if your mind's not ready and you're not going to perform, so I'm trying to find that balance and make sure I'm ready and I'm starting to figure it out, I'm only getting better, I'm young, I've got a lot of time.
05:57Man, that second round I hit him with the two piece and I felt it on my hands, I hit him really hard and I noticed him wobble, I thought I was going to get the finish by TKO, I'm surprised he was able to battle through it, but he's a veteran, he's been in a lot of tough fights, he's fought a lot of great fighters, so I expected a tough, resilient fighter in Mike Pyle, it's a good win, I'm just only getting better from there.
06:19What do you do to start finding that peak, because a lot of people, I need two months, I need five weeks, what do you do to fine tune it, to finally get it, people's advice or just trial and error?
06:28Yeah, trial and error, I think I'm learning each and every fight, what's working for me, what are the things that are helping me to be more comfortable and more confident on fight week and I'm just going to keep practicing those things and visualizing and everything's going to take care of itself.
06:44You obviously have a unique relationship and history with John Jones, what did you make of everything that happened with him?
07:14I'm glad he hasn't learned from his mistakes, I wasn't trying to take a jab at him, I just being honest, I want him to learn from his mistakes and I want him as a person to be able to pull himself out of this.
07:26I don't know, I think it's different for everybody, I think the mindset, preparation, how guys prepare, I feel like I'm a terror in the gym, I don't feel like I've ever lost a round in the gym, my pressure and my will to win in the gym and fights, I think that's what carries me and helps me beat these guys.
07:45I train with all these guys, I know where my skills are, I want a big fight and I want to keep getting better and I came in this sport to get that belt, I promise you before I'm done in this sport, I will have that belt.
07:57You're now about to witness Colby's first taste of defeat.
08:01After I lost last time, he came out to watch me and it was my first professional loss, I just told him, hey man, this is what I can do when I'm not hurt.
08:09I showed up, I was broke, I had to show up for that fight against Ward Lee Owens with a fractured rib because I was broke, I had debt, I had to pay bills so I had to show up and get my show money.
08:17I let him know this is what I can do when I'm healthy and I'm going to keep bringing good things to our hometown name like he does.
08:23After the first round, the pace I put on was really high, I saw him walking back to his corner, I knew he was exhausted and in the second round when I caught that elbow, I just felt his soul leaving his body, all his energy got zapped and I knew it was just a matter of time until I was going to get the finish.
08:39I wanted Damian Maia, that's probably a big jump up, I'm not going to jump that far having beat a big enough name to get something like that but I think young Kim is fair, Gunnar Nelson, someone like that.
08:47It felt great man, it didn't matter who was in his cage tonight, it could have been GSP, no one would stop me from getting my hand raised.
