Our Christmas Day at Mon Repos Turtle Sanctuary near Bundaberg was truly eye-opening! In this video, we explore one of Australia's most important sea turtle nesting sites and discover how conservation efforts are making a difference.

Join us as we walk along the quiet shoreline, spotting turtle tracks left by nesting mothers and learning about the specially marked nesting sites. We'll show you the incubators and protective cages that ensure turtle eggs develop safely away from predators.

One of the most surprising things we learned was how artificial light can disorient baby turtles. These hatchlings instinctively move toward the brightest horizon (normally the ocean), but coastal development lights can lead them in the wrong direction!

While we didn't see turtles laying eggs or hatchlings emerging during our Christmas visit, we'll share the best times to witness these amazing events. The nesting season runs November to March, with peak hatching January-March.

For the best experience, remember to book guided tours, follow ranger instructions, and minimize light usage during nighttime visits. The Mon Repos Turtle Centre also offers interactive displays and a Junior Ranger program perfect for families.
