00:00Russia's President Vladimir Putin says he agrees in principle with the U.S. proposal
00:06for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine.
00:11Former Polish President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Lech Wałęsa discusses Russia's
00:15invasion of Ukraine in an exclusive interview with Euronews.
00:21Belgian police raid the Brussels headquarters of Huawei and make some arrests as part of
00:25a corruption probe linked to the European Parliament.
00:32Russia's President Vladimir Putin has said he agrees in principle with the U.S. proposal
00:37for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine.
00:40But he said some of the terms still need to be worked out and that the deal should pave
00:44the way to an enduring peace.
00:47The idea itself is correct, and we certainly support it.
00:51But there are issues that we need to discuss, and I think that we need to talk to our U.S.
01:04colleagues and partners about this.
01:06Maybe we should call President Trump and discuss it with him.
01:11But the idea itself is correct, and we certainly support it.
01:20Putin also said any deal should tackle what the Kremlin calls the root causes of the conflict.
01:26That's thought to be a reference to Ukraine's wish to join the NATO military alliance, something
01:30Moscow has said it won't tolerate.
01:33Also expected to be a topic Moscow and Kyiv won't agree on is what happens to the territory
01:38Russia seized during the war.
01:40Putin didn't mention Moscow's occupation of Ukrainian territory or the atrocities committed
01:45during the full-scale invasion now in its fourth year.
01:50Ukraine agreed to a U.S.-proposed month-long ceasefire on Tuesday only if Russia abides
01:54by it following negotiations in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah.
02:02Former Polish President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Lech Wałęsa addressed the situation
02:07in Ukraine and spoke of the Ukrainian people's struggle to end the war in an interview with
02:11Euronews.
02:12He expressed concern over the conditions under which Ukraine is being pressured into reaching
02:16a ceasefire.
02:17I am afraid that they will force Ukraine to make a bad compromise.
02:24But again, looking at it logically, it will be a loss of six to ten years in my opinion.
02:32And then it will all unfold.
02:34If we don't defend democracy, demagogues and populists will set the world on fire,
02:38stressed Wałęsa, referring to the threats facing Europe and the world.
02:42What Ukraine is doing is a result of the development of our civilization.
02:48What Russia and even Trump are doing is treachery.
02:52It is retreating into development.
02:55He also emphasized that European defense is meant to act as a deterrent with a goal of
02:59changing Russia's attitude to avoid a spillover of the conflict in the wider region.
03:04Today we have to defend ourselves, we have to protect ourselves, but only so that there
03:10will be a reflection, so that there will be systemic changes and so on.
03:15This is what we should do, not defeat or victory, because there will be no victory here.
03:21We will all be defeated.
03:23The former Polish President expressed hope that just like his Solidarity movement installed
03:27democracy in Poland in his era, the next generation will work hard to protect and maintain it.
03:37Belgian police has searched the Brussels headquarters of Huawei and several homes in a major corruption
03:43investigation linked to the European Parliament.
03:48According to reports, 15 current or previous MEPs might be targeted in the case and some
03:55arrests have been already made.
04:00Investigators suspect that members of the network received bribes in exchange for influencing
04:05EU decision-making in Huawei's favor.
04:11This comes as no surprise because in the wake of the Qatargate scandal, the Parliament simply
04:16didn't put in the necessary reforms that they should have to prevent the next scandal and
04:20here we are today.
04:21Even though there are rules in place that prevent gifts being received, travel being
04:25paid for, lucrative side jobs to be had by MEPs, there will always be this risk.
04:31Belgian prosecutors sealed the offices of two assistants to MEPs and notified the Parliament's
04:37President about the proceedings.
04:39The Parliament's press service said they will cooperate with the investigators.
04:46The European Parliament's reputation suffered a serious blow three years ago when a corruption
04:51ring working to promote the interests of Qatar was dismantled.
04:58One thing is for sure for this EU institution, there will be a huge reputational damage in
05:04the coming weeks.
05:06Sandor Giroch reported for Euronews in Brussels.
05:14The Congolese government is to meet with the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels for peace talks
05:19in Angola next week.
05:22Tensions escalated between the two after the militant group took control of the strategic
05:27Congo city of Goma in January.
05:30M23 is one of the around 100 armed groups that have been vying for a foothold in mineral-rich
05:37eastern Congo.
05:39The announcement comes after several cancelled peace talks hosted by mediator Angola that
05:44had previously excluded M23 rebels and instead focused on the Rwanda backers.
05:51The conflict between the two has created one of the world's most significant humanitarian
05:55crises with more than 7 million people having been displaced.
06:06At least 11 people were sent to the hospital with injuries after a 4.4 magnitude earthquake
06:12struck Naples.
06:13One woman was injured after part of a ceiling fell.
06:18Several buildings were damaged, including a church and a seven-storey residential building.
06:23The tremors loosened stone and cement on facades and fallen rubble fell on multiple vehicles.
06:31The earthquake struck at a depth of roughly two kilometres underneath the town of Bozuoli.
06:36Many people were woken up by the tremors at night and fled to the streets or spent the
06:41night in their cars.
06:44The first tremor was followed by several minor ones with magnitudes recorded up to 1.2 on
06:49the Richter scale.
06:51Seismologists reported an increase in activity in the area recently.
06:55Last summer, authorities carried out drills in preparation for potential future emergencies.
07:04This French military vessel is hunting naval mines as part of an exercise dubbed Ariadne
07:10Commanded by the Greek Navy.
07:12Teams from the US, Romania and Belgium are also taking part.
07:16On board each ship are mine clearance divers and specialised drones.
07:21We caught up with Commander Melin of the Capricorn to learn more.
07:59This sort of painstaking work nowadays primarily used to clear mines that have been used in
08:24conflict since the First World War or to secure theatres of operations before the deployment
08:29of other military vessels is about to undergo a revolution as next generation naval drones
08:35should come online in a few years and replace the need for this demagnetised ship to navigate
08:40over underwater minefields which puts dozens of sailors' lives at risk.
08:45The French military is currently testing such a drone.
08:48This anti-mine warfare exercise is also aimed at fostering cooperation among NATO maritime
08:54forces and crucially boosting interoperability, a key goal of the military alliance since
09:00the outbreak of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
09:15Alistair Heide for Euronews, off the coast of Crete.
09:46European space probe Hera flew by Mars and its moons, capturing unique photos from a
09:51new perspective.
09:52Hera photographed the surface of the red planet as well as the face of Deimos, which
09:57is a smaller, more mysterious moon out of the two.
10:13The flyby was part of Hera's trajectory towards Dimorphos, an asteroid that NASA deliberately
10:19crashed into two years ago to deflect its course.
10:22Hera will then analyse the impact NASA's spacecraft had on the asteroid.
10:28During the flyby, the space probe used the gravity of Mars to be launched deeper into
10:32space, shortening its time by months and saving a significant amount of fuel.

11:04According to Euronews, the milestone event, which coincides with Poland's presidency of
11:08the European Union, offers a unique moment to reflect on Warsaw's significant role in
11:15shaping Europe's future and its contributions to a united, forward-thinking Europe.

11:27all member states in negotiations with other EU institutions.
11:32The spot rotates among the EU's 27 member states every six months.
