De Lima on Duterte arrest: No one is above the law

Former senator Leila De Lima says that no one is above the law and impunity will not last forever. This was De Lima's answer when asked by The Manila Times about the lessons learned over the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity. De Lima was in Bacacay town where she visited the residence of former representative Edcel Lagman on March 14, 2025 evening for a dialogue with the incumbent local officials and aspirant candidates from the first district of Albay.

00:10No matter how powerful you are, no matter how influential you are to people,
00:18no matter how rich you are, if you are guilty of a crime,
00:23especially of the so-called heinous and horrific crimes,
00:28like crimes against humanity, you must be punished.
00:33No one is exempt from accountability.
00:38That, I think, is one of the biggest lessons for what happened,
00:42that we have a former president for the first time in our history,
00:46and even the entire Asia.
00:49No one else has been subjected to the jurisdiction of the ICC.
00:56He was investigated, and he is now arrested.
