00:00Mullion garnered attention from the get-go when he broke his maiden by 10 lengths and
00:07was named a TDN Rising Star.
00:10The full brother to derby winner Mandaloon never returned to the track after that win,
00:15but the Juddmont team now has high hopes for their home-bred stud career at Sequel New
00:20York.
00:21Well I think even in an operation like us at Juddmont, we go through a lot of horses
00:25and we obviously are lucky enough to race an awful lot of top-class horses.
00:32And then there are prospects that come along every year or two that absolutely stand out.
00:38Mullion was absolutely one of those obvious horses.
00:42He was the star of his crop all the way through, he had an air and presence about him in everything
00:49that he did.
00:50When he came back in that performance back at Churchill Downs when he ran a four on the
00:55rags and did it with his ears pricked just effortlessly, we saw something that beyond
01:03a shadow of doubt was right up there with some of the greats that we've been lucky enough
01:08to race over the years.
01:09And unfortunately, the reoccurrence of a relatively minor issue but enough to put him on the sideline
01:15for too long made us think, well, now what do we do with him?
01:19And I really, really was motivated to try and make this horse a successive stud because
01:25I had that high of an opinion of him as a racehorse, as a looker, and obviously with
01:31his magnificent classic pedigree as well.
01:33So that's when I met Becky and we jumped headlong into a plan and offered to even put some Juddmont
01:42mares into his book, really, really try and make him the success that I hoped he would
01:49have been if he had been accomplished enough to stand in Kentucky.
01:54Mandolin stood for $25,000 last year and we were absolutely swamped with mares and got
02:02a really good book of mares, bred over 200 mares.
02:05When you're talking about an equal opportunity for New York breeders with a horse that we
02:09feel had similar ability, probably even faster horse, our guess is that he would have been
02:16more of a miler type than Mandolin.
02:23Obviously same pedigree, same exceptional looks, so it's a great opportunity to access
02:30the exact same genetic makeup, but in New York and not having to come down to Kentucky
02:36and pay Kentucky prices for it.
02:39It's that raw talent, that raw brilliance that people seek out in stallions and definitely
02:48Mollion fits the bill.
