00:00Churchill calls itself the polar bear capital of the world.
00:05In winter, polar bears live out on the ice hunting seals.
00:09In summer, they come ashore and live off their stored fat.
00:13When the seasons change, this town of 900 people
00:16finds itself sharing space with more than 1,000 polar bears.
00:19What happens if you have a bear coming through town
00:22and somebody calls you?
00:23One of the bigger methods that we use is hazing.
00:26What that is, we're using the horns on our truck,
00:29sirens, lights, we want to move them to the north
00:31because more often than not, that's where they're headed anyways.
00:34And if we can get that bear off land, across the river,
00:37we never have to really deal with that bear again.
00:42Can you slow down one sec, Jen?
00:45Sure.
00:47I see one.
00:49Where?
00:50Right at our 11 o'clock.
00:53Yeah, that's a bear.
00:55Yes!
00:56Where?
00:57So right, he's just a white dot.
00:59He's way out there.
01:00He's on the coastline.
01:03After a quick check to make sure there aren't any other bears nearby,
01:06Jeff leads us out for a better look.
01:08Cool.
01:11Okay, see him?
01:12He's right, he's in the water.
01:14Yeah, he's right over there.
01:16Oh, he's swimming around.
01:18So congratulations, you saw your first polar bear.
01:21Yeah, there you go.
01:23So at this time of year in July, like I said,
01:26they're going to be along the coast here,
01:28and what he's doing is he's trying to keep cool
01:30and kind of just sitting in the water,
01:32and he's just trying to get away from the bugs and stuff like that.
01:35That is amazing.
01:37Around here, you just never know where one might turn up.
01:40There could be a bear right behind us lying in the grass,
01:42and we wouldn't even know it was there
01:44if you fixated right in with that one bear.
01:46It's the bear that you don't see
01:48is the one that could pose a threat to you.
01:50In this situation, it's the bear who's not seeing us.
01:53He's in the wind, so even though polar bears
01:55can pick up a scent 18 miles away,
01:57this one has no idea he's being watched.
02:00I mean, that is such a majestic creature,
02:02and to get to observe it in its natural habitat
02:05is truly an incredible and unique experience.
02:07Yeah.
02:09The dream, the dream has been fulfilled.
02:11I saw a polar bear.
