It's not just the recent Hong Kong demonstrators who've found success in direct action. At Stonewall, in Montgomery, in India and elsewhere, protest movements have worked.
Transcript
00:00Fellow citizens, for more than two months, protests arising from the Fugitive Offenders
00:16Bill have continued. There have been chaotic scenes at the airport and MTR stations. Roads
00:23and tunnels have been suddenly blocked, causing delay and inconvenience to daily life.
00:41The government will formally withdraw the bill in order to fully allay public concerns.
01:11We hope to achieve equal rights as any human being deserves.
01:41I'm certainly not going to stand up here and pretend to be an expert on what happened at
02:09Stonewall. I do know what happened should not have happened. The actions taken by the NYPD
02:15were wrong, plain and simple. The actions and the laws were discriminatory and oppressive,
02:22and for that, I apologize.
02:39It is complete independence that we want.
03:09I think it's a historical day for Europe and for the world war. The fact that the war
03:39is coming down between human beings symbolizes the new era of mankind, an era when there
03:45will be no wars.
