Do vaccines have any side-effects? Should I wait for Pfizer's vaccine to come to India? As Covid-19 vaccinations open up for everyone above 18 years, a doctor answered some important questions asked by young people.

00:00Can you please tell us if the vaccines are effective against various strains of the coronavirus?
00:04If I've tested positive recently, how long should I wait before I get my vaccine?
00:10If I take two different types of vaccinations, will it really help me avoid COVID-19?
00:16People are getting COVID even after taking the vaccine shot.
00:19Does this mean the vaccine is not effective?
00:22No, it does not mean that the vaccine is not effective.
00:24Taking the vaccine just means that you may get the COVID but it may be of less severity.
00:30It may not result in death or ICU admission or even hospitalization.
00:34So you may get a mild to moderate disease and your body will be able to fight with it.
00:39Hi, I'm Vomit Masrani and I'm 23.
00:42I'm planning to take the vaccine in the coming months.
00:44Can you please tell us if the vaccines are effective against various strains of the coronavirus?
00:49Of course, it's an ever-evolving process in terms of the biology of the virus.
00:54If an absolutely new variant comes, we don't know.
00:57But so far, whatever variants have been documented,
01:00these vaccines will be able to give you some amount of immunity even towards these variants.
01:06Hi, I'm Ashani Chatterjee.
01:07I'm 30 years old and I have not been infected by COVID.
01:11With news of foreign vaccines like Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson coming to India,
01:17my question is that should I wait for those or should I take what is available right now?
01:21The answer would be no.
01:22We have good vaccines available to us.
01:25Yes, there is a short supply going on.
01:28But as soon as it is possible and feasible for you to take the shot,
01:32you should take the shot and not wait for any other foreign vaccine to come to India.
01:38My name is Maryam Akhtar.
01:39I'm 25 years old and I wanted to know if I've tested positive recently,
01:45how long should I wait before I get my vaccine?
01:48If you've had COVID-19 recently, you can actually wait for about two to three months,
01:5390 days before taking the COVID vaccine because your body will have some amount
01:58of natural immunity towards it and you can take the vaccine after that period is over.
02:03Hi, I'm Arijit Banerjee.
02:05I have two questions.
02:06What does the efficacy rate of the vaccines actually mean
02:10and which one is more effective, Covaxin or COVID-19?
02:13So actually, it is really, you know, you have to do the math, understand the trials,
02:19what was and what that number is based on, you know, on what calculation that number is based.
02:24But so far, if you grossly look at it, at least in India, the options that we have with both
02:30the vaccines, Covishield and Covaxin seem to be equally efficacious.
02:35And the numbers, whether it's 93, 98, all really depends on how the trials were designed.
02:40And sometimes it is not directly correlatable.
02:44But in terms of effectivity, both vaccines are equally effective.
02:48I was wondering if I take two different types of vaccinations,
02:52will it really help me avoid COVID-19?
02:54No, it is not recommended to not take multiple vaccines.
02:58Stick to the regimen and the vaccine that you have been given at the first shot.
03:04And there is no benefit of taking multiple vaccines right now.
03:07Hi, doctor, I'm Alan Anthony.
03:09And I wanted to know if there are any long term side effects of the COVID vaccine.
03:15To be honest, it's whatever has been studied and observed till now, they have not.
03:21You get the immediate post vaccine symptoms like flu like symptoms like fever,
03:26body ache, headache, or arm soreness at the site of the injection.
03:30But other than that, they've not really noticed any major side effects in terms of immediate
03:35long term really, we'll have to wait and watch.
03:38But so far, we've been it's been what six to eight months since all over the world,
03:42people have started taking the vaccine.
03:44And we have not been, you know, coming across any major side effect
03:49of or long term side effect of the vaccine.
03:52So it seems to be pretty safe.
03:54Hi, I'm Akshisha.
03:56I wanted to know if pregnant women can take the vaccine
03:59and also whether it's safe to take it on your period.
04:03We are not recommending pregnant women to take the vaccine electively.
04:07However, if somebody has taken the first shot and realizes later on that they are pregnant,
04:13it is not so far not shown any side effect to the pregnancy or the baby.
04:20But as a recommendation, we are we are telling pregnant and lactating
04:24women to wait for the vaccine and to gather more data.
04:27Yes, you can take the vaccine during your periods,
04:30there is no contraindication for the same.
