22-year-old Adline Castelino is the first Indian in 20 years to reach the top five at the Miss Universe pageant. But did you know she didn't want to be a model at all as a child?
Transcript
00:00I used to tell my mom I would never be a model or air hostess because I didn't know at that
00:22time how hard it was to be one.
00:24I used to think it's a very easy job and you don't have to really use your brains but you
00:29really need to use your brains and it's a very difficult job, it's a very difficult field to be in.
00:40My mom wanted me to become a doctor so I thought that's what I want to become.
00:48So I came to become a dancing doctor but that didn't work out for me.
00:52It's once that my classmate came to me and she said you're my Miss Universe and when
01:03she said that I was very curious what Miss Universe is and what it stands for.
01:08So when I started looking at the videos I was inspired by how the women were carrying
01:12themselves and you know how confident they are and then after I you know I came across
01:18Lara ma'am, Sushmita ma'am.
01:22Being a dancer it was very easy to be on a ramp so for me all of this, all of these
01:34things just fell in place.
01:36I was alone, I was trying to find a place to stay.
01:50I remember even once one night not having a place to stay I was just waiting for you
01:56know the transfer to another place and I remember spending one night at Marine Lines and saying
02:02that oh my god you know this should be the lowest point but luckily after that life has
02:08always been good.
02:09The problem for me is that people always told me that you know you have a speech defect,
02:17you can't speak well.
02:18First you learn how to speak well and then you think about coming to the competition.
02:22So at that time to really build your self-esteem and to know your worth is very important because
02:27when you come here you're judged for a lot of things, unfortunately, even by yourself sometimes.
02:42They only see the finale night when everyone's in the gowns, shiny gowns and when they're
02:47in the swimsuits but it's a long process that goes behind the pageant where you know we
02:53get to know women from different parts of the world and what they stand for, their worth,
02:58where they come from, what they represent and you know for a 22 year old like me it's
03:04a lot to learn.
03:05I get to learn from everybody's experiences and it's really empowering.
03:10Even if a woman is an actress, she can also be a businesswoman.
03:16Well, I come from a farming background, like my family has always been into farming and
03:21that has fascinated me the most, you know, growing food, exporting food and all this
03:26has been my interest for the longest but it's going to take a lot of effort and a lot of
03:32effort from me to really study it, to understand the market before I enter because I have no
03:37background in business, neither does my family have.
03:40So I'll be the first one to start it but I'm someone who has taken risks before, failed
03:45so I'm really not scared.
