00:00Good afternoon, my name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor for Sussex Newspapers. Lovely
00:06this afternoon to speak to Matt and Lucy from Pale Blue Eyes. Now, it's a bit of a fresh
00:11start with the third album, isn't it? You've made a big journey in slightly difficult,
00:16well, difficult family circumstances, a big journey from Devon to Sheffield, and the third
00:22album now, which is, say, a bit of a fresh start, isn't it, Lucy?
00:26Yeah, it feels like a sort of weight lifting, and it's quite a sort of positive, like, like
00:31you say, it's like new beginnings, new players, new people, setting up a new studio here in
00:35Sheffield and just kind of navigating all of that together, but with the sort of backdrop
00:41of Pale Blue Eyes being a very fun vehicle that we kind of used to go around and play.
00:46Does the album feel different?
00:49It does to me. Obviously, it's really tricky to know how it feels to people hearing it
00:54for the first time. To us, it feels like a, yeah, definitely a positive progression
00:58and like some, some like elements of Pale Blue Eyes are still in there, but then we've
01:03tried a few new things, had a few, you know, brought in a few new instruments, a couple
01:07of new players, and just all sorts of, yeah, just trying things out, which has been really
01:14fun and quite liberating, I think.
01:16Yeah, and Matt, obviously, it's been a really difficult time for you, hasn't it, losing
01:20both your parents in fairly quick succession. The first albums were uplifting despite the
01:26circumstances, but you're saying with this album, especially with The Move, you've been
01:30so much more focused on the album, haven't you? It hasn't been a distraction to difficulties
01:34elsewhere.
01:35Yeah, I think we've had an amazing amount of support through that journey and through
01:41that process, but through the nature of that not being a day-to-day part of our lives,
01:46we have had time to focus on these songs and go, yeah, go a bit deeper with how we've
01:53written and collaborated on them.
01:55What sorts of things are happening lyrically on the new album, would you say?
02:00I think because there's been so much change, and obviously, you know, not living those
02:07circumstances anymore, I've been able to focus in on other areas of things that have like
02:12inspired me or moved me or like subjects and experiences that aren't really anything
02:18to do with that time and that world, and it being a fresh start and having Headspace has
02:24opened up like a different world of kind of subjects that were in journals or books or
02:30just floating around in my head, which I've now had time to focus in on and write tunes
02:36about.
02:37That sounds great. And loosely, Sheffield is your family area, isn't it? But Matt, do
02:41you now feel at home up north?
02:44I think so. Like Lou's mum every year like buys me a Sheffield United shirt with my name
02:49on the back and her favourite player. So I've got like four or five of them.
02:53Do you have to wear it?
02:54So I think I'm now being, oh, all the time. Yeah, every day, day in, day out, to Christmas,
03:01you know, family dinners, Sunday lunches.
03:02We're going to the football tomorrow, aren't we? You'll have to wear it for that.
03:06I love it here, actually.
03:07How are Sheffield United doing? Going brilliantly, is it?
03:11Really well. Really well, actually.
03:12No, really good.
03:13Oh, they're doing well.
03:14Yeah.
03:15Yeah, they're going to probably go up, I think.
03:17I think we'll go up.
03:18Having fairly recently gone down.
03:19I said wheel, though. So that, I said wheel, which I may not have said four or five years
03:25ago.
03:26You're being a supporter, clearly.
03:27I am still an ex-football fan at heart.
03:30Those football shirts are working their magic. Fantastic.
03:34Before long, you're heading south for a date in Brighton.
03:37Congratulations on the new album and really lovely to speak to you both.
03:41Thanks.
03:42Thanks for having us.
