00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World, my name is Theo Huston-Betts and this is your
00:03weekend roundup where I'll go through some of the stories from the Manchester World website
00:06that went out over the weekend and are deserving of a little bit of extra attention.
00:10We're going to start with the positive news about the revamp of Eccles Town Centre, with
00:14work now starting to demolish the shopping centre there.
00:18The centre is made up of shopping units, a car park and a market hall and was bought
00:21by Salford Council back in December 2022 with the idea of demolishing it and that being
00:26the first stage of regeneration of the area.
00:29The shops near the centre are unaffected and the next stage will be the exciting reveal
00:32of the transformation plans.
00:34More on development and the University of Manchester is creating space for over 1,000
00:38new students with new accommodations in Fallowfield, it will mean building 3,300 new student bedrooms
00:44across 23 apartment blocks that will replace the 2,300 that are there already.
00:49Demolitions of the Owens Park accommodation began last year, marking the end of its 60
00:53year lifespan, which saw icons such as the Chemical Brothers, Rick Mayall and Benedict
00:57Cumberbatch live there.
00:59The final plans for the accommodation were submitted to the council on March 17th and
01:03significant developments are expected over the coming months and years.
01:06On to sport and Rich Fay had a full plate this weekend with City's win over Bournemouth,
01:10they fell behind initially but came back to win largely through the impact of Nico O'Reilly.
01:15Rich has a great round-up piece on the game and young O'Reilly's impact, Guardiola was
01:19so impressed with the full-back slash midfielder that it's confirmed already that the youngster
01:23will feature in the semi-final against Forest next month.
01:27Rich also has some Manchester United pieces, some building up to their match against Forest
01:31soon and one exciting piece about Hugo Ekiteke, the French striker who's impressed so much
01:35for Eintracht Frankfurt this year and has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
01:39That's all for now though, follow Manchester World for more and we'll see you again soon.
