The 1979 attack on the Kaaba was one of the most serious incidents in Saudi Arabia's history. Juhayman al-Otaybi and his followers stormed the Masjid al-Haram on November 20, 1979, claiming that his companion, Muhammad bin Abdullah al-Qahtani, was the Mahdi (the guided one).

The siege lasted for almost two weeks, during which thousands of worshippers were held hostage. The Saudi government launched a military operation to regain control, with the assistance of French experts. The battle resulted in hundreds of casualties, and later, Juhayman and his followers were executed.

During this crisis, Pakistani military officers were also present to assist the Saudi government. It is said that Pakistan’s former President, General Pervez Musharraf, played a role in the operation, as he was part of Pakistan’s Special Services Group (SSG) at the time. Following this incident, Saudi Arabia enhanced security measures at the Grand Mosque to prevent future attacks.
