00:00Hey, fam, what's up, what's up, what's up?
00:01This is Robert Anton here, RobertAnton.com, coming to
00:03you with your no-frills American Idol commentary from
00:06a singer, or is this The Voice?
00:09Hey, fam, what's going on?
00:11It's night five of American Idol auditions, and the clock
00:14is ticking.
00:15It's the last week of auditions.
00:17The search for a superstar continues, and we saw some
00:20people who auditioned on the bus tour through 11 cities.
00:23First, there was Miranda Post-Scott.
00:25She did Fairytale by Sara Bareilles, and she's the
00:27sister of She from last season.
00:29Who?
00:30She.
00:31She who?
00:32Her.
00:32She.
00:33No, I'm just kidding.
00:35And Miranda started out by saying she wasn't much of a
00:38singer and more of a dancer, but she sounded great with a
00:41lot of confidence and just belting out the notes.
00:44Really nice gruff to her voice, and she pushed the
00:47envelope a little on the high notes.
00:49Eh, mixed emotion on my part.
00:51But Harry said there's a certain I don't
00:53care about her voice.
00:54J.Lo mentioned an abandon to the way she performs and
00:56called her singing interesting.
00:58Keith liked the rasp in her voice and said she's one of
01:00his favorites today.
01:02Who?
01:02She.
01:02No, her.
01:03Miranda, not she.
01:04I think I'm funny over here, right?
01:05How about Clay Aiken going off on one of the contestants who
01:08was doing all this crazy stuff in the big room of auditions
01:11and everything like that?
01:12And he said, what are you doing?
01:13And then the boy mooned him.
01:16That probably was my favorite part of the show.
01:20Amelia Eisenhower was next.
01:22She was 15.
01:22She did Many Rivers by Annie Lennox.
01:24And she brought in her fiddle and didn't have a bad voice.
01:28She seemed a little unpolished and rough around the edges,
01:30but I liked the feeling she gave to the performance.
01:33She mostly just held her violin, though she played a
01:35few notes at the start.
01:37J.Lo said she loved her strong voice.
01:39Harry said there's a mysterious
01:40quality she has about her.
01:41But cautioned her to hit the notes more squarely.
01:44Keith said she had a soulful potency.
01:47And she got three yeses to go to Hollywood.
01:49Then there was Joy Dove, Joy, Love, and Peace.
01:52She did Jump Alive by Hank Williams.
01:54And she had a lot of energy and a solid, rounded tone.
01:58I didn't know this song, but she really pulled me in with
02:01her personality.
02:02Harry said her energy and spirit was awesome.
02:04And she sings loud.
02:06And she got three yeses to go to Hollywood.
02:08Then there was Mackenzie Borg.
02:09He did a medley of each of the judges' songs.
02:12And I remember this guy from The Voice.
02:14I think it was season three, 2011.
02:16I know that for sure.
02:17I think they labeled him Harry Potter meets Justin
02:20Bieber back then.
02:21He was very polished with a great sound and control.
02:24His voice was pleasing with great, soft colors to it.
02:27I just wish he'd open his eyes more.
02:30Harry said it was charming and sweet.
02:32J-Lo liked the sound of his voice and called it pleasant.
02:34Of course he went to Hollywood.
02:35And please make sure to thumb up the commentary.
02:37And let me know that you are enjoying it.
02:39And also let other people know that we are over here
02:41watching and discussing American Idol.
02:43Thank you guys so much for your thumbs.
02:45Aaron and Andrew Birdwell.
02:47They were 27 and 23.
02:48What song did they do?
02:49You tell me down in the comments, because I don't know.
02:52They sang together and were trying to do some folk song or
02:54something, and the judges were laughing at them.
02:57Their harmonies were off, and they were both just hitting
02:59the notes, and I didn't know if they were hitting the real
03:02notes or not.
03:03This was a bit of a train wreck.
03:04It was funny.
03:05I enjoyed it.
03:06Keith called it a Gregorian acid trip, and they got three
03:09no's and went home.
03:10Up next was Jenna Renee.
03:11She did She Don't Love You by Eric Paslan.
03:14And she sat at the piano and gave an emotional performance.
03:17I like how she really got into the mic and emoted for the
03:20judges, all this stuff going on in her eyes and misty
03:24colors and things.
03:25I was like, work, girl.
03:26You better perform.
03:27Harry called her a soulful young woman.
03:29J-Lo said she gave them the whole package.
03:32Keith asked her what type of music she grew up listening to,
03:34and she got three yeses.
03:36Then Mario Bonds performed Inseparable by Natalie Cole.
03:39And he came in and told his story.
03:41He was blind and very upbeat.
03:43He also brought his guitar, but laid it down and sang with
03:45the piano.
03:46He had a nice tone, but also a tendency to scoop into the
03:49notes and go sharp.
03:50Lots of emotion, but it felt like it just took over
03:53sometimes, and he wasn't really getting out the melody
03:56well.
03:57J-Lo said she was going back and forth, parts that she
03:59loved and parts that weren't good.
04:01Harry called him a powerful presence, but said as a whole
04:03performance, he didn't hear what he'd like to have heard.
04:06Keith said it didn't connect, and he got three no's.
04:08And he was very, very upset.
04:10It was really hard to watch.
04:11Adam Lasher was up next.
04:12He did Knockin' on Heaven's Door by Guns N' Roses.
04:15And they had him talking over a lot of his auditions.
04:17So what I heard was pretty good, but I just didn't really
04:20hear a lot of it very well.
04:22I felt he may have been mumbling his words a bit when
04:24it did become clear near the end.
04:27We'll see how he does in Hollywood, because
04:29he got three yeses.
04:30J-Lo said he had a nice sound to his voice.
04:32Harry called his rendition really great and said he
04:34sounded good.
04:35Keith liked his voice a lot.
04:37And in the Pimp Spot for the night, we had Emily Brooke.
04:39She was 16.
04:40She did Careless by Rae Lynn.
04:41Oh, she did the Voice winner song.
04:44Anyway, she played guitar, turned on the twang, and
04:47really belted this out.
04:49That's what I wrote.
04:51J-Lo said she really improved because
04:53she was here last year.
04:54Harry called it the best audition of the day.
04:56Keith added that there is no substitute for the work.
04:59Quick Rap by Robert Anton.
05:01Oh, Lord.
05:02People talk about how these reality shows, The Voice,
05:05American Idol, America's Got Talent, all these make people
05:08think that they can just get up there and become a star.
05:10But what people don't realize is that there is a whole lot
05:14of work behind becoming a very good singer.
05:17You know, keeping on pitch, keeping your rhythm, emoting
05:22your song, learning your lyrics, interacting with the
05:26audience, people just don't realize.
05:27And I feel like, on the contrary, the fact that people
05:31see that they need to do all these things, they start
05:34working on them at a younger age and really realize how
05:39much work it is before they even go to audition.
05:41Some of these people came on.
05:42They sang.
05:43I've been watching this since I was a baby.
05:44I saw the first season of Kelly Clarkson winning.
05:47And oh my god, I've always wanted to do it.
05:49So they started classes.
05:50They started singing every day.
05:51They got voice teachers.
05:52They sang in choir in school.
05:54They started doing talent shows.
05:56All of these things to build up to doing this audition.
06:00That is how you become a performer, a vocalist, an
06:04artist, by continually and constantly working on it and
06:07improving your craft.
06:08And I believe that these shows push people to really get
06:13serious at a very young age, which is a great thing.
06:17All right, that's my rant for the night.
06:18Let me know what you thought down in the comments.
06:20This is Robert Antion, robertantion.com.
06:21Tomorrow night's show is two hours.
06:24It is the last audition.
06:27It's going to be some Hollywood week.
06:28Again, thanks for watching, and thanks for your thumbs.
06:30I'm out.
