103-year-old Holocaust survivor Margot Friedlaender has been awarded the Westphalian Peace Prize for lifetime achievement. The ceremony took place in Münster on April 4, where German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier praised Friedlaender as a “living witness” and emphasised the ongoing responsibility to defend democracy.
Friedlaender was born in Berlin in 1921 and survived the Holocaust after being deported to Theresienstadt. She returned to Germany in 2010 after six decades in New York and has since engaged in public remembrance work, including visits to schools.
