00:00Good afternoon. My name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspapers. Lovely this
00:06morning to speak to Hugh Davies. And Hugh, you are heading towards Portsmouth on your
00:11debut tour. Now the debut tour, in a way, has been a long time coming. You wanted to
00:15wait until you felt it was absolutely the right time to tour. But you're loving this
00:19debut tour. You're saying that you want the audiences to be good, the shows to be fulfilling,
00:24and that's certainly happening.
00:26Yeah, they're a lot of fun. The way that I've written the show is which kind of every single
00:30show is different as well. So I think it's really important when you're doing like a
00:35long tour that you need to feel different every time and you're making something new
00:42and unique for the audience that are there. So every show that I do, whenever someone
00:48comes up to me or messages me and says they had a really good time at the show, if I ask
00:52them which show it was, I'll know exactly which one it was, because every single one
00:55is different. And it relies a lot on the audience. And yeah, that's something I've really been
01:02implementing.
01:02Not just a blur when you get off stage afterwards.
01:05No, no, they're all really different.
01:07Distinct in your mind.
01:08Sometimes people now, like people have seen the show before and come back to the tour
01:13on a different place. And if I don't necessarily remember the place, but if they say what happened
01:19in the show, they can go, oh, that was a really fun one. Or that was not such a fun
01:24one. But yeah, I always have a very vivid memory of every single show that I've ever
01:29done. And we're getting into the point where it's almost getting into like 60, 70 shows.
01:34So I remember every single one.
01:35And we're talking about the timing being right for the tour. You've been doing this coming
01:39out for 10 years, but this is the first tour. Why now for that tour?
01:44It's just I felt like I wanted to do a tour. You can't really explain these things. I
01:49think that I think I got to a place in which I wanted to meet my own audience. I've been
01:56doing a lot of different kind of projects over the years, and you never really know
02:02who it's reaching. You can sort of see numbers on social media or whatever it is, or viewing
02:08figures or producers telling you how well something is going. But you never really can
02:12see. And it's really cool to meet all the different sorts of people who would come to
02:17a show like that. And the pressure does feel off. Because people have come to see you,
02:21they're not come to see a lineup of comedians, or you the comedian that you're supporting,
02:25they've come to see you and it feels very rewarding.
02:27And you've got a cracking title for this album, My Ancestors, Brackets Dead and your
02:34ancestors, your close friends and families, you call them include ET and Uncle Joe from
02:39Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
02:41Yeah, it's a family show for a family crowd. Yeah, it's a, it's
02:47How do you justify these people as ancestors then?
02:50Well, you know, they're in the scriptures, you've got to consult the scriptures. I've
02:55checked the scriptures and you know, my family tree looks insane. And I'm not going to judge.
03:00I accept my family tree, I accept my family, this is my blood.
03:03It's the interrelatedness of being, isn't it?
03:06Yes, it's about it's about acceptance. Ultimately, you know, this is show about acceptance. It's
03:11not a very funny show. It's a show. It's a it's a show about accepting your your ancestors,
03:16no matter who they are, no matter if they're Batman, or the all six from the six friends
03:20from friends. You know, these are all is a beautiful family tree. And I'm proud to be
03:25playing songs that they've given to me.
03:29Good luck with the remainder of the tour.
03:31Thanks very much, Phil.
03:33Love to speak to you. Thank you.
