00:00President Donald Trump has announced the U.S. will hold direct talks with Iran on its nuclear
00:06program starting on Saturday.
00:11Trump made the remarks during his Oval Office meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
00:15Netanyahu, the first world leader to visit the U.S. president since he imposed tariffs
00:21on countries worldwide.
00:24We're having direct talks with Iran and they've started. It'll go on Saturday. We have a very
00:32big meeting and we'll see what can happen.
00:35During their meeting, Netanyahu also vowed to eliminate Israel's trade deficit with the
00:40U.S. after his country was hit with 17 percent tariffs last week.
00:46We intend to do it very quickly. We think it's the right thing to do. And we're going
00:50to also eliminate trade barriers, a variety of trade barriers that have been put up unnecessarily.
00:59Netanyahu said he and Trump further discussed ongoing efforts to get hostages released from
01:04Gaza and said they are working on another deal.
01:08Meanwhile, hundreds of Israelis protested against Netanyahu and his government in Tel
01:14Aviv following their moves to oust top security and legal officials and to resume war in Gaza.
01:26U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed he has no plans to suspend global tariffs,
01:31despite another day of turbulence in global stock markets.
01:35We're not looking at that. We have many, many countries that are coming to negotiate deals
01:42with us and they're going to be fair deals and in certain cases they're going to be paying
01:48substantial tariffs.
01:50Following big swings throughout the day after Trump threatened additional tariffs on China,
01:56the Dow Jones closed down 0.91 percent at the end of trading, while the S&P 500 dropped
02:020.23 percent, marking its third straight day of losses.
02:08The tech-focused Nasdaq composite gained 0.1 percent after fluctuating between losses
02:14and gains multiple times during the session.
02:19Europe's biggest stock markets all closed more than 4 percent down, with Spanish financial
02:24experts saying there are strong reasons to fear a global recession after the IBEX 35
02:29index closed with a 5.12 percent drop.
02:37European trade ministers met in Luxembourg to weigh possible steps in response to global
02:43tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
02:46European Commissioner for Trade Maro Šefcović said the Commission is being careful in prioritizing
02:52negotiated solutions.
02:55This introduces a lot of uncertainty, lack of predictability, inflation fears, and the
03:04fact that tariffs are, in the end, the taxes which will be paid by the businesses, but
03:13especially by the final consumers.
03:17So that, in the end, increases, of course, the fears among the consumers.
03:23Washington described the tariffs as reciprocal, but German Minister of Economic Affairs Robert
03:28Habeck dismissed that logic.
03:30First, the calculations from my point of view are nonsense, even the basis of the calculation
03:36is nonsense.
03:37Yes, the assumption that a trade budget surplus or deficit is a problem in itself is a wrong
03:46estimation because, in the end, globalization serves all economies, and especially the American
03:52economy has huge growth figures in GDP, better than a lot of European countries.
03:59The impact from Trump's tariff hikes has reverberated across world markets as global
04:04stocks plunged on Monday.
04:06The European Commission is offering the U.S. a zero-for-zero deal to remove tariffs on
04:11all industrial goods.
04:14Trump has so far said he won't back down and has reiterated his defense of the strategy.
04:23French President Emmanuel Macron has called for the return of a ceasefire in Gaza after
04:28meeting with his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, in Cairo.
04:33He also urged the lifting of Israel's blockade on humanitarian aid.
04:38We condemn the resumption of Israeli strikes in Gaza, which constitutes a dramatic setback
04:44for the civilian population, the hostages, their families and the entire region.
04:50We call for an immediate return to the ceasefire and the release of all hostages still held
04:56by Hamas in Gaza.
04:59Macron's meeting with el-Sisi comes after Israel ended its truce with Hamas last month,
05:04cutting off all humanitarian aid to Gaza and resuming its airstrikes and ground offensive.
05:09Egypt and Qatar have served as key mediators in ceasefire negotiations between Israel and
05:14Hamas.
05:15El-Sisi echoed Macron's call for an immediate ceasefire and also rejected calls for the
05:20displacement of Palestinians from their land, something U.S. President Donald Trump has
05:25previously suggested.
05:33The Netherlands has launched a so-called weed experiment in 10 municipalities, meaning coffee
05:38shops will only sell legally grown cannabis.
05:42The almost 80 participating coffee shops will no longer buy from illegal growers in a move
05:47the Dutch government hopes will regulate the production and sale of cannabis.
05:59Ten companies are allowed to supply cannabis to coffee shops in the test municipalities.
06:04Preparations for the scheme first started in 2017, but it wasn't until the end of 2023
06:10that legal weed went on sale for the first time.
06:25In addition to the quality, the effect on crime and public health will be measured during
06:29the experiment.
06:35The 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp was commemorated
06:40with a ceremony in the German city of Weimar.
06:43It was attended by the country's former president Christian Wulff.
06:47In a speech at the event, he warned against radicalization and a worldwide shift to the
07:21Wulff also criticized the rise of anti-immigration sentiment, championed by the far-right Alternative
07:38for Germany party.
07:39The former president, who belongs to the Christian Democratic Union, called for active commitment
07:44to democracy and the preservation of humanity.
07:47The Buchenwald concentration camp was established in 1937.
07:51At its peak, the camp and its satellites housed close to 300,000 inmates.
07:56More than 55,000 of its prisoners were killed by Nazis or died as a result of hunger, illness
08:02or medical experiments.
08:04The camp was liberated on the 11th of April 1945.
08:11King Charles III has arrived in Rome for a three-day state visit to Italy, accompanied
08:17by Queen Camilla.
08:20It marks his first overseas trip since his brief hospital stay for cancer treatment side
08:26effects and will include the first address to the Italian parliament of a British monarch,
08:32meetings with Italy's president and premier and a trip to Ravenna to commemorate the city's
08:3780th anniversary of liberation.
08:41Charles had been set to meet with Pope Francis, but this was postponed by mutual agreement
08:47due to the Pope's recent hospitalization with double pneumonia.
08:52While in Rome, Charles is expected to emphasize the strong ties between Britain and Italy
08:57as NATO allies, at a time when European nations are working to bolster support for Ukraine.
09:05The visit will also feature a joint flyover of Rome's historic centre by the Italian
09:10Frecce Tricolore and the RAF Red Arrows.
09:22Europe is in a rearmament race.
09:24The United States is disengaging from the continent and Europeans depend on American
09:29military support for their defence.
09:32However there's one area in which Europe has a degree of autonomy, tanks.
09:37Added together, the armies of the European Union have a total of 4,262 armoured vehicles,
09:43slightly less than the 4,640 tanks in the USA.
09:48However the situation varies greatly from one member country to another.
09:53Greece leads the way with 1,344 vehicles, followed by Poland and Romania.
10:00By comparison, Germany and France have 296 and 215 tanks respectively.
10:06While Athens stands out because of historical tensions with Turkey, Warsaw has beefed up
10:12its arsenal in response to the Russian threat.
10:15The case of armoured vehicles reflects the problems facing the European defence industry.
10:44The market is highly fragmented with several companies and several models such as the
10:48French Leclerc tank and the German Leopard.
11:12Dozens of European models mean different training, different parts and therefore different maintenance.
11:19The question of standardizing equipment has been raised for many years.
11:24But behind this production lies issues of sovereignty, employment and economic activity
11:29that European capitals don't seem ready to give up.
