A UFO-like drone that can light up a whole neighbourhood has been launched.
The Flying Sun provides 300,000 lumens of light from above - the equivalent to three huge stadium floodlights.
Washington-based Freefly Systems say the device can illuminate a 137,000 sqft area to one foot candle, a unit of measurement for amount of light that falls on a surface.
Designed for single-operator use, the U.S.-firm say it's perfect for security, roadwork, construction, and emergency response.
The Flying Sun can operated flying free or be paired with a tether system and electric vehicle for virtually silent and unlimited uptime.
The drone is now available for pre-order, with the most powerful Flying Sun 1000 version priced at around £46,000.

00:00The goal is to create a super easy add-on for Alta X or other drones that can provide lighting,
00:07super bright lighting, as much light as you want, as much light as you have power for,
00:11really easily and simply anywhere in the world, whether battery-powered or off of a generator
00:16in a tether. Codename Flying Sun, three kilowatt LED underneath an Alta X. So this is just, you know,
00:24the team's first pass at putting together a prototype to see how this might work and how
00:28we like it. It's been pretty awesome and fun so far. Learning a lot about thermal management,
00:32learning a lot about LEDs, learning a lot about optics. These LEDs are on little adjustable brackets.
00:38They fold up for transport into a tiny little thing. You can see we've laid out a bunch of Cree LEDs,
00:43power system for them, heat sink for them, and the nice thing is they actually go out under the prop
00:49wash so we can get away running super high power with these like active heat sinks and yeah run
00:55right now three kilowatts, maybe like 300,000 lumens on this or something. And these are designed
01:00to be modular so we can just bolt these on until we run out of power. So today was the first test
01:06flight powering up all four of them and I still really can't see straight like when I was trying
01:09to fly and see how much time I had left to fly. I couldn't see the screen because they're so bright.
01:13We'll have it at FreeFlyFest and we're going to continue testing it and refining it. This is version
01:17one. We'll probably be ready to launch something probably around version five would be my guess,
01:22something like that. We're off to a good start. Flying Sun. Check it out.
