00:00Well, we take a look at the latest drought monitor, which has some good news for the state.
00:03A few leftover showers today, a warmer weekend, and another storm system on the way for late Sunday into Monday.
00:18So the latest drought monitor shows some improvement.
00:21Last week's drought monitor didn't quite show it yet because it didn't take into account the midweek precip we had last week.
00:27But it was substantial enough to carve out a large chunk of southern Minnesota and southwestern Minnesota out of drought and severe drought.
00:34We had a pocket of severe drought in west central Minnesota last week.
00:37That's gone now.
00:39Just considered moderate drought in this whole part of south central Minnesota that was in drought taken out.
00:45But also some improvement along the north shore too, except for the Duluth area, still in moderate drought.
00:50And you're going to hear the sirens today.
00:52Don't be alarmed.
00:53It's not the first Wednesday of the month, but severe weather awareness week.
00:561.45 and 6.45 p.m.
00:58So you have an opportunity to practice what you would do in the event of a tornado or severe weather where you're at work or school.
01:05And also, again, at home in the evening.
01:07Or just two chances to practice, period.
01:09So this latest system still giving us clouds today and some spotty showers.
01:14Not a lot of moisture.
01:15We picked up anywhere from a few hundredths of an inch to as much as two-tenths of an inch of water in the last 24 hours in a few spots.
01:21Mainly northeastern Minnesota where they also saw some snow, slushy accumulation around Silver Bay to Virginia.
01:27And again, some showers further south too.
01:30And we might see some showers fill back in a little late this afternoon.
01:34Kind of a convective situation where with even just these peaks of sun could destabilize the atmosphere enough to produce a few showers.
01:41Cooler today too.
01:42Low to mid-50s for southern Minnesota.
01:4340s to the north.
01:45Tomorrow will be warmer though thanks to a little more sunshine.
01:48Quite a few clouds today.
01:49But again, peaks of sun in that cloud cover.
01:52And tomorrow will be more partly cloudy.
01:55It was looking sunnier.
01:56Looks like we'll have a little moisture lingering.
01:58So kind of in and out of the clouds tomorrow.
02:00But more sun than cloud cover I think.
02:02Especially compared to today and yesterday.
02:04And highs will be warmer tomorrow.
02:05Upper 50s for the Twin Cities.
02:07Some low 60s in western Minnesota.
02:09And it's going to be cooler along the north shore the next few days as the rest of us warm up here.
02:13Well into the 60s.
02:15Saturday, 70s in southwestern Minnesota.
02:17And Sunday still on track for 70 degrees plus here for the whole southern half of the state including the Twin Cities.
02:23It won't be completely sunny though Sunday.
02:25The next storm system will develop it looks like at least a few showers.
02:29Though this primarily is going to be a northern Minnesota event it looks like.
02:32So late Saturday a few showers already in northern Minnesota.
02:35Should stay dry here in southern Minnesota.
02:37And then Sunday we could see some midday or late day isolated showers or a few thunderstorms.
02:43And yeah that snow you're seeing again in northern Minnesota maybe Sunday night into Monday as colder air wraps into the system.
02:49But you can see that the bulk of the steadier precip stays to the north.
02:52We could be dealing with some snowfall accumulation.
02:54Doesn't look substantial.
02:56But maybe some slush again for northern Minnesota Sunday night especially into Monday.
03:01But as we've talked about many times this time of year easiest to get that snow to accumulate during the nighttime hours regardless of the temperature.
03:08And there is going to be just enough instability.
03:10This is most unstable convective available potential energy.
03:14Enough to generate some claps of thunder.
03:16We even had a little thunder and some showers earlier this morning in central Minnesota too.
03:21And as I mentioned by far the bulk of this precip is going to fall in northern Minnesota.
03:24Potential for a half inch of liquid equivalent.
03:27And again it will be in the form of rain and snow and then lesser amounts as we head into southern Minnesota.
03:32So we've got that warm air for the weekend.
03:34But that storm system Sunday into Monday is going to draw in some cooler air for a couple days.
03:38Monday, Tuesday back to normal or slightly below normal temperatures in the 40s and 50s.
03:44But as we head into mid and late week back to spring.
03:47You should see 60s and low 70s again by the end of next week.
03:51So kind of that typical April roller coaster here.
03:54But generally these systems we've been seeing, the current one and that one coming Sunday, Monday,
03:59offering less moisture than those March systems and what we had last week.
04:03So kind of a drier pattern overall when we compare it to March in the very start of the month.
04:0953 today.
04:11Again, look for potentially some late afternoon, early evening spotty showers to pop up again.
04:16More sun tomorrow.
04:1758 degrees.
04:19Saturday looks very nice.
04:21Upper 60s should be with plenty of sun here in southern Minnesota.
04:26Again, those showers will start to develop late in the day up north.
04:29And then Sunday, warmer.
04:31Less sun, but warmer.
04:32And then cooler Wednesday, Thursday.
04:34Again, most of the showers with that Sunday, Monday chance to our north.
04:38Pretty hit and miss here.
04:39And just that roller coaster of temperature is pretty typical for April.
