00:00In the 70s, you had multiple bodies showing up in Los Angeles.
00:05California is so...
00:07There was no question that Southern California was in a state of panic.
00:09You have serial killers literally all over the city.
00:13This was an ideal killing field for anyone who wanted to get away with these crimes.
00:19We would always say, my God, please, not another one.
00:24It's been 44 years since these murders.
00:26I have dreams about victims.
00:28And I wake up in the middle of the night and say, don't open that door.
00:33Underneath all of that sunshine, there was the darkest of the dark.
00:37It was a very scary time.
00:39People panicking that that daughter's going to be the next victim.
00:42It was just unbelievable.
00:47There were so many murders happening.
00:49Had to have a name for it.
00:53Serial killer.
00:54Hillside strangler, freeway killer, sunset strip killers, toolbox killers, skid row stabber.
01:04L.A. became the serial killer capital of the world.
01:07This was premeditated evil.
01:10No other motive or reason except they like to kill.
01:13What rose out of that was L.A.P.D.'s robbery homicide unit.
01:18We had no computers.
01:20No DNA.
01:22No technology.
01:24You got a job to do.
01:26Get your hands dirty.
01:27It's me against the killer.
01:28It's a competition.
01:29Who's going to win?
01:30We'll see who laughs last.
01:32Every other day, they were finding a body.
01:36And the killing somehow got even worse.
01:39What came next was unlike anything they had ever seen.
01:44There was a human head in there.
01:46That's when people really started saying, hey, you know what?
01:48Now we're not safe.
01:52Pow.
01:53You have this clock.
01:58This person that you're hunting is going to do this again if you can't catch them.
02:03Nobody deserves to die like that.
02:06We should try not to remember the killers, but to remember their victims.
02:12You know, someday I thought this would be over, but it never will be.
02:23We should try not to remember the killers, but to remember the killers.
