00:14My name is Ed Wardle. I've spent the summer trying to survive completely alone in the far north of Canada, miles from anyone and any place.
00:25I came here because I wanted to know what it was like to survive in the wild. It was a boyhood dream for me.
00:36Even though I've climbed Mount Everest and trekked to the North Pole, on this I got more than I bargained for.
00:45I mean, look at that. This has got to be what it's about. This has got to be freedom, isn't it?
00:52Keep hearing things. Spare isn't here. Don't run, don't run, don't run, don't run, don't run.
01:00I've eaten two thirds of what I brought with me. I missed him. Now he's laughing at me.
01:11I've always wanted to do this.
01:21I really want to talk to people and touch people. I've lost an incredible amount of weight.
01:28What have I cut myself into?
01:34Every ten paces or so, I wonder if I'm going to break my leg.
01:40I desperately want some help.
01:44Get up!
01:45I'm going to break my leg.
01:53I'm going to make all of these type shots.
01:54I'm going to jump out.
01:56I'm going to jump out.
02:00Five hours and the other ones, we're ready.
02:03Right, we're over here.
02:08Down below me here is the Yukon.
02:10About 200,000 square miles of forest, that's two times the size of the UK.
02:20This is exactly what I've been looking for, it's pretty much middle of nowhere.
02:27We're flying into the Ruby Range of mountains.
02:30When we get there, that'll put me about 100 miles from the border with Alaska.
02:34About 300 miles south of the Arctic Circle.
02:40This is the dog pack lake we're going to land on.
02:47I'm kind of excited, it's going to be a pretty extraordinary adventure.
02:59This is it.
03:10That's it.
03:11That's the last person I'm going to see for a whole three months.
03:17What a strange feeling.
03:18What am I doing?
03:19What the hell am I doing?
03:20What am I doing?
03:21What am I doing?
03:22What am I doing?
03:23What am I doing?
03:24What am I doing?
03:25What the hell am I doing?
03:26Whew!
03:27Whew!
03:28Whew!
03:29Whew!
03:30Whew!
03:31Whew!
03:32Whew!
03:33Whew!
03:34Whew!
03:35Whew!
03:36Whew!
03:37Whew!
03:38Whew!
03:39Whew!
03:40Whew!
03:41Whew!
03:42Whew!
03:43A little bit of a strange feeling.
03:44What am I doing?
03:45What the hell am I doing?
03:46Whew!
03:47I don't know this is just a bit uh he hasn't sunk in yet I really don't know
04:16what to think. I'm alone in the wild ok my exposure is not really looking great is it?
04:43With that guy gone I'm the only person here so everything you see from now on will be
04:49filmed by me.
04:50I almost freaked out back there I couldn't quite get my head around what was happening
05:07what I was doing but I've loaded up the canoe and now I'm paddling down a lake look at this
05:17the mountains around it are really spectacular it's beautiful weather it might be everything
05:25I'm doing dark this is kind of rough country look at that I've never done anything like
05:32this before and I grew up on a farm so I can use a gun and an axe but doing this is a good
05:39thing I've never done anything like this before I grew up on a farm so I can use a gun and an
05:59an axe but doing this kind of stuff is completely different being alone heightens every experience
06:10you have to make decisions all the time I'm gonna have to make decisions all the time
06:15that will affect my safety and my well-being whether I'm gonna make it through the next 3 months everything's
06:27much much more intense when you're on your own and out here I'm well and truly on my own
06:35the first thing I've got to do is find a camp a place to cook my food and basically to live this is my new home now for 3 months
06:55it's seven o'clock in the evening now I've just run out of time kind of being plagued by this
07:24this is gonna have to do for tonight the sun's going down and I still need to you know at least string up a hammock
07:43so I've got somewhere to sleep tonight and catch a fish it's gonna be a late night
07:54this is my new bedroom if you like just to give me some reassurance maybe take some stress away
08:14uh I brought a little electric fence gadget so that a bear won't attack me in the night
08:20and that goes all the way around my tent that'll give him a good shock and he'll turn around and run
08:25away hopefully rather than getting inquisitive about me in my sleeping bag
08:33every now and again a twig will crack or I heard a little grunt a little while ago it could
08:38have been a moose I guess or who knows could be anything
08:44I think there's gonna be a few surprises maybe not some good ones
08:48okay we're fishing I am starving
09:05there could be plenty of fish in here let's see
09:14I thought I had one already
09:18and that is a beaver I didn't know there were beaver there he is oh there's a beaver over there look
09:30there he is that's a beaver
09:36amazing
09:39and there's something on the end of my head man I've got fish I've got fish I've got fish
09:43now that is a grayling I reckon
09:53oh oh oh oh oh almost lost it
09:59say hello
10:01he's fishing excellent
10:04well I don't know what they might be but I just caught one so this one's excellent
10:07come here fishy
10:27it looks pretty bad
10:28doesn't matter it tastes good mostly because I'm starving
10:44I've got to get more than this on a regular daily basis otherwise I'll start losing weight
10:51pretty fast
11:02so
11:04so
11:12so
11:14so
11:16I'm going to bed now this is kind of scary at this time of night it's about it's about one
11:33o'clock in the morning this is just the kind of time of day when bears are really active
11:38I feel like I should be quiet like sneaking around
11:43I'm supposed to make noise so that I don't surprise the bear hello bear
12:00hello bears I tell you if I come across a bear I don't know I'm gonna do
12:08they're here somewhere 17,000 of them
12:17that's my shelter over the electric fence
12:28that's kind of reassuring I don't know what happens when it runs out of batteries
12:44what a place to wake up
13:10I got to build a shelter today really proper one for cooking in and keeping my food in
13:22there's a squirrel making a huge market
13:28maybe I should eat him
13:38he's suddenly shut up
13:44but it's just um do I really want to do that
13:49I mean I've got a gun there I could climb out my sleeping bag quietly aim the gun at him
13:55and bam kill a squirrel and that'd be breakfast
13:59just doesn't seem right somehow to kill a little squirrel
14:04but if he's edible
14:08I'm kind of half making it up half a bit of red influx
14:36this is called a lean-to shelter
14:38so it looks pretty dodgy at the moment
14:41but I'm hoping it's gonna get better and it's gonna be a waterproof shelter
14:44this is my home
14:55yeah I'm pretty proud of that
14:58I think it's great
14:59excellent
15:03look at these mosquitoes
15:15that's terrible
15:23I don't know how I'm gonna put up with this
15:26there are so many mosquitoes here they're huge
15:30can you see that?
15:33I came out here because I wanted to discover if I could do this
15:40I want to see if I can go back to where we're designed to live
15:45as human beings on planet earth in a forest pretty much like this
15:57I'm in true wilderness here there isn't anybody around for miles
16:01it's really beautiful
16:16it's really beautiful I mean it's spectacular scenery
16:20I've always wanted to do this
16:29I've always wanted to do this
16:31I've always wanted to do this
16:44that's freezing
16:46what a scorcher
17:03it's really calm
17:05it's hardly a breeze
17:07down there
17:08down there
17:09is my eyes
17:11my shelter should be about there somewhere
17:14this is my emergency
17:20tracking device
17:21and I'm supposed to press this OK button once every 24 hours
17:25so before 10 o'clock in the morning
17:27I gotta press this button
17:29and if they don't get an OK message
17:32they'll wait a couple of hours
17:34but at 12 o'clock they'll come and fly over
17:37was the agreement
17:38and see if I'm OK
17:40that's my link
17:41to the outside world
17:53wow
17:54that's the biggest bird I've ever seen
17:57I said that's the biggest bird I've ever seen
18:02wow
18:04did you see that?
18:06that's brilliant
18:08I saw a gold
18:10it's not a golden eagle
18:11American eagle
18:12bald eagle
18:16one of those big classic eagle looking things anyway
18:23that's great
18:27now that I've built a cooking camp
18:42and I've been cooking at it
18:44I need to be pretty careful
18:45when I walk back in the morning
18:46the smells are definitely attractive to bears
18:50I know that much
18:55if a bear has been attracted in the night
18:57and found my food stash
18:58then
19:01he may still be there
19:03hello bear
19:05it's just extra stress really
19:08I feel a little bit afraid
19:10all the time
19:11so
19:12what I'm supposed to do
19:13is
19:14put my food
19:15up a tree
19:16let's do it
19:25ok
19:26well
19:27we're about
19:2820 feet up
19:29and there's the view
19:42on the top of the tree
19:44it's pretty awesome
19:46wow
19:48that's brilliant
19:50this is something else
19:53this is doing something extraordinary
19:55I think it's really valuable
19:56I'm going to learn a whole load
19:58it may be a
19:59life-changing experience in this
20:02and that would be good
20:05I want to fill my life with
20:07extraordinary things
20:09extraordinary adventures
20:11extraordinary learning situations
20:13I want to
20:14do extraordinary things
20:16extraordinary things
20:17all the time
20:18and I think if I do that
20:19then
20:20my life will be
20:21exciting
20:22and
20:23vital
20:24and worth living
20:28Yahoo!

20:46like there's going to be
20:49somebody
20:50out here
21:00oh yes
21:10there's a plane
21:11there's a plane
21:14there's a plane just flew over
21:25it's gone
21:28there
21:34it just flew right over the lake
21:38right over the top of me
21:39god
21:42why is that so upsetting
21:44I think it might just be them
21:47checking if I'm okay
21:50I don't know
21:58but I so much wanted him to just do something like
22:02acknowledge that he'd seen me
22:04or
22:06you know he could waggle his wings
22:07say everything's okay
22:10I'm guessing I'm going to get used to this a bit
22:15being alone
22:19coping with it
22:21but
22:22just seeing him fly away is just
22:26I don't know
22:30heartbreaking
22:31it's just a turn
22:33he's making
22:35uh
22:38peace
22:42peace
22:44peace
22:46peace
22:47peace
22:48peace
22:50peace
22:53peace
22:54peace
22:56peace
22:57peace
22:58Look at that, there's a porcupine, up a tree, I think it's a porcupine, it's pretty sweet,
23:27apparently he can eat porcupines, I can't quite imagine eating that, he's kind of cute, I wonder
23:36what I would do if I was desperate, on earth is a porcupine doing up a tree, it's a good
23:51night for me, it's a good night for Mr porcupine, a bit of a boost today, I'm calling this the
24:13end of week one, I've got to get in my canoe, and canoe down the lake, to drop off the first
24:21lot of tapes that I've shot, and tomorrow, early in the morning, the plane's going to come in
24:27and pick up the first lot of tapes, I've got a long way to go yet,
24:45That's all the tapes I've shot so far
25:00All right.
25:49I've been eating fish for about a week now and my supplies are dwindling too fast.
26:01I've got to find something else to eat so I'm going hunting.
26:17I learned to do this growing up on a farm in Scotland.
26:21My brother and me would go out at weekends and catch rabbits and sell them to their local
26:26butcher for about 10 pence of rabbit or something.
26:36The rabbit will run through here and pull that and spring the trap.
26:44Sorry Mr Rabbit.
26:52I don't enjoy killing things, I don't particularly want to kill anything but out here I need
27:00to find food and if I don't find food then I'll starve.
27:08Hello bear.
27:10I'm trying not to be nervous about bears.
27:26I mean there's probably nothing there but I just feel like there's constantly something
27:37there.
27:38I'm trying not to be nervous about it.
27:45I'm trying not to be nervous about it.
27:57I'm trying not to be nervous about it.
28:07So what is it that makes a footprint like that?
28:18Is that a beer?
28:31If that's a beer footprint it's huge.
28:48I'm hungry.
29:08I find it quite hard to move around any sort of distance.
29:15I'm up at about the top hole in my belt now.
29:21I've got one more to go but it was around here to start with.
29:28I also find it kind of hard to think straight when I haven't had enough food.
29:35I keep doing things again and again and going back because I have forgotten what I was doing.
29:44I need more food basically.
29:49So I've come out to check my snares.
29:53I just got to the first one I can just see up ahead.
29:59There's nothing there.
30:02I've got a few more to check yet so I'm still hopeful.
30:08There's two snares and nothing in.
30:13That's number three.
30:16That's four.
30:21I need food.
30:24I definitely can't last three months like this.
30:28It started raining last night and it hasn't stopped.
30:49So I think today I'm just going to sit it out and see if it doesn't improve at all.
31:08Where are they?
31:32They call it Indian potato.
31:46These are the flowers of it and the potato is at the other end so I've got to dig them up.
31:51I met up with an edible plant specialist before I came out here and he told me I could eat those.
31:58And I found them here a few days ago and they're brilliant.
32:03Look at that.
32:24The important thing is that there's also an almost identical plant that's poisonous.
32:32And the only way of telling the difference between the plants is by looking at the little sort of cup thing that holds onto the little bell shaped flower.
32:46If they're long and spiky like eyelashes then it's the poisonous one.
32:53So I have to be very careful when I'm digging these up and eating them that I check the flowers on each plant because they grow in the same place as well.
33:01If they're long and spiky like eyelashes then it's the same as well.
33:04If they're long and spiky like eyelashes then it's the same as well.
33:08They're long and spiky like eyelashes again but they're not good at all.
33:13Wow.
33:15Wow, it's a great big mousse, look at that.
33:44It's coming my way. It's huge and beautiful. I've never seen one before. I want to see if I can follow him for a bit. I just want to see how close I can get, if I can track him a bit.
34:14Oh, he's heard me.
34:23In fact, he definitely knows I'm here now. I could have shot him from here. That would have given me probably enough meat for at least a month.
34:35Seems a bit cool, but everything here is about food. Everything. But that's against the law for me to shoot him.
34:44Now the moose is running away because this porcupine from this tree here started making a whole bunch of noise.
35:03What a place. A porcupine up a tree is scaring the moose. Easy off. Look at that. It's not me, mate. It's a porcupine.
35:19It's a porcupine. Now that is my dinner tonight because I'm hungry.
35:27It's very close.
35:36OK, I got him. I got him. He fell out of the tree and he's falling in the water.
35:41Oh, my God. It smells.
35:56OK, I've brought my porcupine out here. Here he is.
36:15It's kind of like a small pig or something, really.
36:20And I just have to get into the mentality that this is just doing a bit of butchering.
36:27I've got to get his skin off and I've got to get his guts out.
36:31And I've got to do it quickly or the flies will get in.
36:35Ah, geez. He's got a huge amount of guts.
36:45I don't want any of this blood in my clothes.
36:50Normally we get our food from supermarkets and we never even see any of this butchery.
37:00But I can't say I'm enjoying this.
37:07It's just something I've got to do to get my food.
37:11And there we go.
37:26That's my first bit of meat from the wild.
37:32Now I want to get out of here.
37:38Fuck.
37:40That's the pile of guts that I'm leaving here.
37:44I think the truth of it is that I still don't really fancy eating this animal.
38:05It's a bit like a large rat.
38:08It's completely alien to me.
38:13And I don't really know what it's going to taste like.
38:18So this is a piece of porcupine liver.
38:34Ah, it's awesome.
38:35That's truly delicious.
38:36Much better than fish.
38:37Mmm.
38:38Who wants fish?
38:39I'm a bit nervous tonight because I left the pile of guts over there and I'm cooking meat over here.
38:52I'm getting a bit nervous that, you know, there could be a bear just over there.
39:17I'm making a lot of noise.
39:21So that no bears come anywhere near me.
39:32Yo bears.
39:33Hey.
39:34Only me just walking along here.
39:37Just me walking along.
39:40Hello bears.
39:44I can't think of a thing to say or a thing to sing because I'm terrified.
39:57If you wouldn't mind just letting me pass tonight, that'd be really great.
40:01I'm just going to go to my hammock and go to sleep, huh?
40:06I just want to get in there and turn this fence on and hopefully feel a little bit more secure.
40:14The bear expert told me a story before I came out here that a bear attacked two guys who were camping out in the wilderness.
40:33And it grabbed one of the guys in his sleeping bag.
40:38And he had the sleeping bag done up like usual and he couldn't get out at all.
40:42The bear just was dragging him away in his sleeping bag to eat him basically.
40:47Luckily his friend was there with him.
40:51And he got up and grabbed his gun and shot the bear and saved his friend's life.
41:00I'd really rather not have known that story, thanks.
41:03I've decided it's time. I've got to start experimenting a little bit with travelling.
41:26I want to get out of here and I need to look at other places, see if there's more food in other places.
41:37Yeah, I'm going to try and climb up the side of one of these mountains a little bit
41:41and just see what kind of energy it takes to do that and how far I can get.
41:56That's how long we've died.
42:26I don't know.
42:29I think this is bear shit.
42:33It's not that old.
42:35It's still black.
42:39Well, I guess I knew they were around.
42:41I just was getting used to the idea that maybe they weren't around here.
42:56And then all this is, this is all newly dug up.
43:11Maybe this is where a bear sleeps.
43:14There's just bear shit everywhere here.
43:17I just don't know. I don't know enough.
43:26There's something in the trees over there.
43:29There's something in the trees over there.
43:42I just heard something running.
43:52Hello?
43:53Hello?
44:08That was close.
44:10Like...
44:12Like 20 yards away.
44:23I can't see that far.
44:33I can't see that far.
44:53Let's go.
45:08I'm looking at it.
45:09Let's get out of here.
45:10Let's get out of here.
45:24There's a bear, there's a bear.
45:26There's a bear, there's a bear, there's a bear.
45:28Shit.
45:30There's a bear in the woods, there's a bear.
45:32I saw a bear.
45:34I saw a bear.
45:36Don't run, don't run, don't run.
45:38Don't run, don't run.
45:40Don't run.
45:54Okay, okay, okay.
45:56It's okay.
46:02It's just up there.
46:08So I'm running through all that stuff there, just for a brief bit.
46:13It was really big, very dark colour.
46:21Okay, okay, I'm not far from camp.
46:25I'm not running.
46:31The hairs on the back of my neck are standing up.
46:33I'm running up.
46:34Okay.
46:43Okay, here's my camp.
46:44I keep hearing things.
47:01I keep hearing things.
47:14Half of me thinks it's fine and nothing's gonna happen and I'm not gonna see that bear again.
47:31But the other half of me still thinks that there's a big risk in sleeping here like this.
47:37Maybe I should be packing up and getting out of here.
47:49I dunno.
47:55Here we go.
47:56To the north.
47:57I love this.
