00:00Hi, y'all.
00:00My name is Gabby Lee.
00:01I live in Philadelphia, and I wouldn't be what most people
00:04would call cool.
00:05I'm a straight-A student, a plus if I can get them.
00:08I play in a band, the clarinet in my school's band, that is,
00:10the only time I go to any sports games.
00:12And I don't go to parties.
00:14But my one great dream is to be a world-class chemist.
00:17I couldn't be happier.
00:18But would you believe for one night, it all changed?
00:21I rebelled against my father, almost got my friends kidnapped,
00:24and had a run-in with the police.
00:26It was probably the best night of my life.
00:27It all started with Millie Cancun, my one vice,
00:31the biggest pop star sensation in the world.
00:34Sure, some other singers might sing about their relationship
00:37traumas or death or whatever moody stuff.
00:40But Millie was all about living young, wild, and free.
00:43My polar opposite.
00:45I'm not alone in my Millie mania.
00:47Lots of girls my age are, including my three besties,
00:49Sue, Evelyn, and Jamie.
00:51Wouldn't you know it, Millie was going on tour
00:53and having shows in New York.
00:55Typical.
00:56All the cool stuff happens there.
00:57Between the four of us and our various extracurricular activities,
01:01the only night all four of us could possibly go
01:03was Sunday night, to which my dad said,
01:05No, it's a school night.
01:07Plus, her music seems a little inappropriate for your age, does it not?
01:11What does he know?
01:12I can't get too mad at my dad, though.
01:14It's just me and him.
01:15Mom isn't in the picture anymore.
01:17I should have told him how much it would mean to me.
01:19But I backed down.
01:21My friend's luck was no different,
01:23though their parents were a little less strict.
01:25My parents said I could go, but they don't want to drive me there.
01:28Same.
01:29We could take the bus.
01:30That would take, like, three hours, and plus be sketchy as heck.
01:34Something stirred in me.
01:35I don't know what came over me.
01:36We could take my dad's car.
01:38Word?
01:38He'd drive us there?
01:39I thought you said you couldn't go.
01:41Well, what if he never finds out?
01:43I could drive us there.
01:44I've got my learner's permit.
01:45Are you for real?
01:46Was I for real?
01:48Already the gears in my head were turning as it spurred up this plan.
01:51I'd take his car, drive to the concert, buy our tickets, have the best night of our lives,
01:55drive home, and my dad would be none the wiser.
01:58In his eyes, I would still be the good rule-following daughter he asked for.
02:01Yeah, we can all meet at my house, and I can go from there.
02:04Whoa, when did you get so cool all of a sudden?
02:07Yeah, I was cool.
02:09This was my chance.
02:10My plan was foolproof.
02:12I started laying the groundwork, making a subtle suggestion to my dad.
02:16I think we should have spaghetti night on Sunday.
02:18Okay.
02:18The seed had been planted, and on Sunday, fruit had come to bear.
02:22For you see, dear viewer, pasta will always knock my dad out.
02:26When he was done, he was fast asleep in his recliner.
02:29I finished the job by laying down a weighted blanket on top of him.
02:32Good thing, too, because he definitely would have been woken up by the sound of Jamie banging
02:37on the door.
02:38Yo, Gabby, you in there?
02:39Shh, I'm sneaking out, remember?
02:41I'll be right there.
02:43Shh, I just gotta grab the-
02:45But the keys to dad's car weren't there.
02:47I checked in his room.
02:48Not there.
02:49A tense realization hit me.
02:50They were still in his pocket, as discreetly and non-suspiciously as possible.
02:56I reached into his pocket to pull them out, lest he wake up and was wondering what
02:59I was doing, after much careful fidgeting, I got them.
03:03I wanted to get out of there, but I had one more thing I needed to do.
03:06The final piece de resistance.
03:08In my room, I set up a fake version of me made from pillows and sat her by my desk.
03:13Should my dad check on me, he would believe to see his dutiful daughter studying for her
03:18math test, not realizing I had already studied in between band practice.
03:21Evil genius.
03:23Mwahahahaha!
03:24I snuck out, we got in the car, and we were off.
03:28I wasn't exactly a car expert.
03:30Better me to do it than any of my friends.
03:32Didn't want to scratch out my dad's car.
03:34If you were to ask me at that moment, I'd have said it had gone perfectly.
03:37We were driving down the road, pre-gaming our jam session, singing along to Millie Cancun.
03:42But then, we started slowing down.
03:44The car started making funny noises.
03:46And then, what happened?
03:48We stopped.
03:48I can see that, but why?
03:50We had broken down in the middle of the road.
03:53Luckily, we were in the middle of nowhere, so it's not like we were causing a traffic
03:56jam or anything.
03:57On the other hand, we were in the middle of nowhere.
04:00We couldn't exactly walk there, and we couldn't get a tow truck.
04:03Time and money were limited.
04:05We only brought money to buy tickets, and phone service was limited.
04:08Some people passed by, but no one would stop.
04:11Please, help us.
04:12You're standing in the middle of the road.
04:14Yeah, that's why we need your help.
04:16Finally, one guy stopped.
04:17Now, I'm not an expert on cars, but he didn't seem to look at the engine for very long before
04:22going.
04:23Yep, it's broken beyond repair.
04:25Wow, are you sure?
04:27Trust me, you young girls are lucky the car hasn't exploded.
04:30Say, why don't I give you girls a lift?
04:33I'm heading to Manhattan right now.
04:34It wouldn't be no trouble.
04:35Oh, wow, thanks.
04:37Um, girls, can we huddle for a second?
04:39We whispered amongst ourselves.
04:40This guy seems kind of suspicious.
04:43Well, what choice do we have?
04:44We can't exactly stay here, can we?
04:47Everyone was in reluctant agreement.
04:52We got into his car and headed for the city.
04:54How was I going to get my dad's car home now?
04:56Speaking of my dad, I wasn't there for this next part of the story, and he might tell it
05:01differently.
05:01He managed to break free from his pasta nap and was able to pull away from the comfort
05:05vacuum of the weighted blanket.
05:07He went up to check on me, just as I thought, and probably said something like,
05:10Gosh, Gabby, I'm sorry I didn't let you go to a concert and allow you to be your own
05:14woman.
05:14I promise I'll make it up to you.
05:16What I didn't account for was him to see his daughter's head fall off.
05:20He went into my room and found I was not there, realizing what had happened in a way only
05:25a paranoid dad could.
05:27He scrambled around the house looking for his keys.
05:29Only when he tried checking the car did he figure out the extent of my betrayal.
05:33He asked our neighbor to drive out to the concert.
05:36He must have gotten there before we did because amongst the crowded lines outside of the concert
05:40halls, I wasn't there.
05:42Me and my friends had arrived in downtown Manhattan, making decent time.
05:46While we were happy to avoid the rain that was picking up, the ride was an awkward affair,
05:50as we attempted to avoid conversation with Echo, as he called himself.
05:54What sort of trouble are you young girls up to tonight?
05:57We're going to a concert.
05:58Oh, a music concert.
06:00What concert?
06:01Yeah, Millie Cancun.
06:02Aw, nice.
06:03I love her song, Ice Cream Summer.
06:05That wasn't a Millie Cancun song.
06:07That was a ZZ Marina song.
06:09Hey, you know what?
06:10I know a shortcut up here that'll get us away from all the traffic.
06:13Wouldn't want you to be late.
06:15Um, no thanks.
06:16That's fine.
06:17You can just follow the GPS.
06:18Riva.
06:19What does she know?
06:20Trust me.
06:21Where could he be taking us?
06:23Back to his apartment?
06:24Where he was going to murder us?
06:25Or worse, maybe he was going to call my dad.
06:28Please, just keep driving north.
06:30We're almost there.
06:31Relax, it'll be fine.
06:33In my panicked state of mind, I grabbed the wheel from him.
06:36Whoa, go Gabby.
06:37What the heck?
06:38We fought for it before he knocked us into a pole.
06:41I swear, it was only a light touch, but it triggered Echo's airbags nonetheless, trapping him.
06:45Go!
06:45We hopped out and ran.
06:47We were grateful at first, but it didn't take long before we were missing the roof of that car.
06:51We didn't know where we were.
06:53Our phones were collectively dying, leaving our directional skills inhibited.
06:56The rain was making us wet and frustrated.
06:59By the time we found the concert hall, the ticket booths had just closed.
07:03Had we been a minute earlier, we could have made it.
07:06Hovering around were some shady-looking scalpers, but their tickets were a little out of our price range.
07:11That'll be $10,000.
07:14I could tell my friends were mad at me, and why wouldn't they be?
07:16This couldn't get any worse.
07:18Gabby!
07:19Oh no, my dad was here.
07:20I was frozen stiff as he came up to me and gave me a hug.
07:24You're- you're not mad?
07:26Oh, I'm mad, but I'm also relieved to see you're all safe.
07:29You girls look like you've had quite the night.
07:31We were almost kidnapped.
07:33Shh, yes, dad, we- I- I screwed up.
07:36Your car is broken down in the middle of the road on-
07:38I saw it on the way here.
07:39Jeff, help me tow it away.
07:40We're going to go get it repaired.
07:42Why don't you four go enjoy a concert while I wait?
07:44He had bought tickets.
07:45We couldn't believe it.
07:46Do you mean it?
07:47As long as you can pay me back.
07:49We all gave him our money.
07:50Oh, okay then.
07:51Well, all's fair then.
07:52I can use this for the car.
07:53After drying up a bit, we went inside.
07:56So, was it all worth it?
07:57Of course it was.
07:58Millie was radiant as ever,
08:00and her collective screams drowned out our worries as we danced away.
08:04Like I said, best night of my life.
08:07Only problem with forgetting your worries is when they come back to bite you.
08:11There they are, officers.
08:12Those girls were underage driving.
08:14I tried to help them, but they insisted on attacking me and leaving me for dead.
08:18The creep from earlier.
08:19And he brought cops.
08:20Any of you girls with your parents?
08:22Um, no.
08:23My dad is going to pick us up, I think.
08:25You think?
08:26Where is he?
08:26He's here.
08:27He's going to be here.
08:28You sound like a liar, Gabby.
08:30She was right.
08:31If my dad wasn't here, were we going to be taken in?
08:34And now my dad would have to bail me out again?
08:36And then I'd be a convicted felon, and it would go on my permanent record,
08:40and I'd never get into college, and I would never...
08:41I started crying.
08:43I'm sorry, officers.
08:45It's all my fault.
08:46Please don't arrest my friends.
08:47I was the one who took my dad's car.
08:49I was the one who crashed that guy's car.
08:51You could take me in.
08:52They shouldn't pay for my actions.
08:55Well, we don't have to.
08:56Oh, no.
08:57You don't have to do that.
08:58We can pay your bail.
08:59Yeah.
08:59Oh, wait.
09:00We gave all your money to your dad.
09:01We can still do something.
09:04Really?
09:05Oh, thanks, you guys.
09:06You're the greatest.
09:07Is there a problem here?
09:08Huh.
09:09Are you any of these girls' father?
09:10That's right.
09:11Well, then, everything seems to be in order.
09:13Hold on.
09:14Your daughter damaged my car.
09:16I expect you're going to compensate me for my troubles?
09:18Are you the one that tried kidnapping them?
09:20No, that's quite a...
09:22You know what?
09:23It's fine, actually.
09:24Hope you have a good night.
09:25That got the guy to leave.
09:26Though it looks like the cops decided to hang out with him for a bit longer.
09:29How much more excitement can you girls get into tonight?
09:32We got in my dad's car, and he drove us all home.
09:35Turns out it wasn't broken beyond repair.
09:37Who would have thought?
09:38One by one, my friends were all dropped off.
09:40It was just me and my dad now.
09:42We parked at home, and before getting out, we had a talk.
09:45You are grounded, you know.
09:48I know.
09:49It just seems right.
09:50But maybe I can be a little strict.
09:53You're growing up.
09:53You're going to want to be your own person.
09:55I can't fault you for that.
09:57But I should have been more honest with you.
09:58I guess I just don't ask for a lot of things.
10:01But I do want to be an A-plus student.
10:03I do want to be valedictorian.
10:04I promise.
10:05I'm not going to make this too much of a habit.
10:07It's all right.
10:08I got into some trouble when I was your age.
10:10Yeah?
10:10Of course.
10:11Maybe more.
10:12Like what?
10:12Well, we don't have to get into it just yet.
10:15It's embarrassing.
10:16Oh, come on.
10:17That's not fair.
10:18Well, perhaps I haven't been forthcoming with you on this concert.
10:23Maybe I've got some personal biases in the way.
10:25What do you mean?
10:26You see, I used to date Millie Cancun's mom.
10:30What?
10:30It wasn't that big of a thing, but I've kept in touch with her a bit over the years.
10:34Millie Cancun is my sister?
10:37What?
10:37No.
10:37Where did you get that idea?
10:39But that does mean you could get me to meet her.
10:41See, this is what I was afraid of.
10:44But what happened next?
10:45I should save for later.
10:46What?
10:46I said it was the best night of my life.
10:48That doesn't mean it was the best night of my life ever.
