A la fin des années 60, Harry et Sally viennent de terminer, chacun de leur côté, leurs études. Harry profite de la voiture de Sally pour retourner sur la côte Est. En chemin, il tente de la séduire mais elle le repousse. Cinq ans plus tard, ils se croisent par hasard dans un avion. Chacun a une liaison, heureuse en apparence. Cinq nouvelles années passent. Sally est seule à présent. Harry vient de divorcer. Ils se rencontrent à nouveau, se rapprochent et décident de s'en tenir à une chaleureuse mais prudente amitié.
