Au début du XIXe siècle, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, 16 ans, est une férue de littérature fantastique. Elle se dispute souvent avec Mary-Jane, sa belle-mère mais s'entend à la perfection avec Claire, sa demi-soeur et son père William Godwin, un célèbre philosophe politique et romancier. Elle voue un culte à Mary Wollstonecraft qui était une farouche féministe. Quand Mary rencontre le beau et rebelle poète, Percy Shelley, sa vie prend un tournant dramatique, entre voyage à travers l'Europe, amour, trahison, tragédie et finalement inspiration. Lors d'une visite à Genève chez le Lord Byron, elle écrit l'histoire de Frankenstein et entreprend de la publier...
