00:00Aside from Final Girls and sometimes the villains, there aren't many characters who make it out alive in horror movies.
00:06However, as much as these deceased characters would have ideally preferred to go on living their fictional lives in their respective films,
00:13they may be comforted slightly in the knowledge that there are other characters out there who suffered a far graver fate than they did.
00:20So with that in mind, I'm Josh from WhatCulture.com and these are 10 horror characters who wished they were dead.
00:2610. Noah Fresh
00:29When viewers meet Noah at the start of Fresh, she's having the worst luck with dating.
00:35She can't stand the frustrations that come with meeting new people and after a horrendous dinner date ruins her evening,
00:41she's just about ready to give up on the whole dating thing completely.
00:45This is when she meets Steve.
00:47He's awkward but charming and the pair hit things off straight away and not long after they meet for drinks and a romance starts to blossom.
00:54The pair's chemistry is so sweet, in fact, that the opening act feels more like a rom-com than a horror movie.
01:00However, things take a sinister turn around the 20-minute mark when Steve suggests they go on a weekend trip together.
01:07When Steve takes Noah back to his place, he drugs her and imprisons her in a quote-unquote luxurious cell.
01:13Though she initially starts freaking out, believing that Steve is going to murder her, the truth is actually much worse.
01:19That's because it's then revealed that Steve is actually a plastic surgeon and a cannibal who abducts young women to use them as cattle to sell their flesh to high-paying clients.
01:30Trapped with his other victims, for a little while, Noah is in a situation where she'd rather a quick death than be chopped up little by little.
01:38Fortunately, and spoilers, she does eventually manage to escape, but not all of Steve's other captives are as lucky, suffering instead this slow, slow demise.
01:499. Teresa and Jack Gardiner – Color Out of Space
01:53In phantasmagoric Lovecraft adaptation Color Out of Space, Nathan Gardiner relocates his entire family to a remote farm where he hopes to live a quieter life after his wife Teresa falls ill.
02:05However, this being a horror film, Nathan's dreams of becoming an alpaca farmer are short-lived when a glowing meteorite crashes in front of their home and begins to alter reality around it.
02:15Initially, the effects are of this cosmic horror star of small.
02:19The youngest child, Jack, notices strange plants and insects around the home, and so far so weird, but nothing, you know, truly traumatizing.
02:26Then, though, when Teresa and Jack are caught in the otherworldly purple light which appears to be the cause of all of these transformations, they undergo a horrific metamorphosis.
02:36The light fuses the pair together as if the child were being put back into his mother's womb.
02:42As sickeningly grotesque as this concept is, it's the constant moans of anguish and agony emanating from the mother-son hybrid that underscores the true horror of their situation.
02:52With no way for the family to reach aid, Teresa and Jack are left to succumb to their grisly transformation until they're finally put out of their misery via a shotgun blast.
03:01And to be fair, in this case, it is probably better than spending eternity as this abomination.
03:08Number 8. Lindsay, The Human Centipede First Sequence
03:11In Tom Six's stomach-churning body horror The Human Centipede, first sequence, American tourists Jenny and Lindsay have car troubles while making their way to a party during their trip to Germany.
03:22Stranded in the middle of nowhere and caught in a downpour, the pair decide to look for help.
03:27And when they arrive at the house of a surgeon, the pair think that they've been saved.
03:31But, well, you know where this is going.
03:33After the women are drugged, they wake up tied to hospital beds the next morning.
03:37And after the good doctor kidnaps a third victim, he explains his sickening master plan.
03:43To surgically conjoin the trio end-to-end, or ass-to-mouth as he famously puts it.
03:49When the procedure is complete, the captives are stripped of all their humanity.
03:53They're kept in a cage and trained as if they were a dog, and the less said about the feeding arrangement, the better.
03:59However, it's Lindsay, who's in the middle of the centipede, who comes out the worst here.
04:03After the man at the front takes his own life, and her friend succumbs to a bad, bad infection at the back.
04:09And with the doctor at this point being dead, Lindsay is just left on her own to die slowly between two corpses.
04:17Eh, I've had worse holidays.
04:19Number 7, Anna Martyrs.
04:21French extremity shocker Martyrs starts as it means to go on,
04:24as a troubled woman named Lucy guns down a family in cold blood in the middle of a quiet breakfast.
04:29However, it turns out that they were actually responsible for the systematic abuse that Lucy received as a child.
04:36Despite getting her revenge though, she then realizes that revenge couldn't rid her of her torment,
04:42and Lucy takes her own life as her horrified friend Anna looks on.
04:46Somehow, events only get worse from there,
04:49as Anna is captured by the very same people from the same organization that tortured Lucy all those years ago.
04:55Their goal is to discover the secrets of the afterlife by torturing women until they reach a transcendental state.
05:01And Anna is the unfortunate winner of the prize of being their next subject.
05:06Consequently, Anna spends the next days or weeks being broken physically and mentally.
05:11She's brutally beaten and tortured in a process which ends with her being flayed alive.
05:17It's an absolutely ridiculous amount of punishment,
05:20and yeah, by the end she definitely wishes that they had just killed her.
05:23Number 6. David, The Mist
05:25Based on the novella of the same name by horror legend Stephen King,
05:29The Mist sees the unassuming small town of Bridgeton, Maine become enveloped in a mysterious mist
05:34that has brought with it a horde of monsters.
05:37As The Mist rolls in, David and his son take shelter in the local supermarket.
05:41Of course, the townsfolk do what people do in a crisis and immediately turn on each other,
05:46rather than band together to solve a common problem.
05:48Escalated by a religious fervor that grips the group, tensions continue to rise while the creatures start to pick them off.
05:54However, it's only when David and his small band of followers are allowed to leave the supermarket
05:58when he understands the real tragedy of the situation.
06:02With a sense of utter hopelessness after realizing that his wife and daughter are dead,
06:06David does what he believes to be the kindest thing in this situation,
06:09and mercy kills his son alongside his remaining friends.
06:12But as he waits for the creatures to then end his own life,
06:16The Mist clears to reveal that the military has started to fight back.
06:20So yeah, in a soul-crushing bout of dramatic irony, David is now forced to live with his actions.
06:26Number 5, The Costume Designer, All Hallows' Eve
06:29When it comes to horror movie villains, Norn are as terrifyingly sadistic as killer clowns.
06:34And out of this unjolly bunch of murderers,
06:37they don't come any more horrific than Art the Clown from the Terrifier series.
06:41Before this psychotic clown got his feature spotlight though,
06:44he was actually featured in the spooky anthology flick, All Hallows' Eve.
06:48In the third and final segment, the short film called Terrifier,
06:52viewers follow an unnamed woman as she arrives at a petrol station on Halloween
06:56to witness the attendant kicking out Art for some deplorable actions.
07:00But when the woman then witnesses Art's brutal killing of the attendant,
07:04she becomes relentlessly pursued by the unstoppable killer,
07:07confirming my theory that nothing good has ever, ever happened,
07:11at a petrol station.
07:12Like, if you have ever had a good experience,
07:15like a really good experience at a petrol station,
07:17please tell me in the comments because, nah, those places are write-offs.
07:20Anyway, rant aside, when Art eventually does catch his prey,
07:24the woman's fate is far worse than death.
07:27She awakes on an operating table with her arms and legs amputated and body mutilated,
07:32and sadly, this isn't a Monty Python sketch and there's no telling what Art has planned for her next.
07:39Number 4. Karen, Cabin Fever
07:41The 2016 remake of Cabin Fever is almost identical to Eli Roth's grungy original,
07:46but it failed to garner any interest from either audiences or critics.
07:50Both versions see a group of five friends' weekend trip to a backwoods cabin
07:54descend into a stomach-churning nightmare when they become exposed to a flesh-eating virus.
07:59Both films also follow the same plot almost beat for beat,
08:02and each is unapologetic when it comes to its extreme gore and gratuity.
08:06However, one of the few changes this time around concerns the fate of Karen.
08:10Whereas in the 2002 version, Karen has her suffering mercifully,
08:14but nevertheless violently put to an end by being bludgeoned to death by a shovel,
08:18the character's fate here is far worse the second time round.
08:22After becoming infected by the virus, Karen is left to rot throughout the course of the film.
08:27As the virus continues to take hold, her body deteriorates into a gloopy, fleshy mess.
08:32With the torment of being eaten alive, understandably a little bit too much,
08:36she resorts to begging to be put out of her misery,
08:39which does happen by way of a shovel to the face.
08:42It might sound similar, but this time around it is so much more brutal.
08:46Number 3. Rex, The Vanishing
08:48Throughout the course of The Vanishing,
08:50protagonist Rex is obsessed with uncovering the truth about what happened to his girlfriend
08:54when she inexplicably disappeared without a trace during their trip to France.
08:59Three years later, Rex is as determined as ever to find out what happened to her
09:02on that fateful day to the point that the mysteries all but consumed him.
09:07One day, however, Rex is approached by a stranger
09:09who claims to be the one who kidnapped his girlfriend.
09:12But instead of simply telling Rex what happened to her,
09:15he informs him that the only way he'll ever know what happened to her
09:18is if he experiences her fate for himself.
09:21And after some moments of deliberation, Rex decides,
09:24hey, what's the worst that can happen?
09:25And accepts the kidnapper's proposal.
09:28Unsurprisingly, in a turn of events no one could foresee,
09:31this was a pretty bad move,
09:33as the film ends with Rex waking up buried alive in a coffin to wait for his death.
09:39Number 2. Kena, Hostel
09:40In the colourful landscape known as the horror genre,
09:44no characters have a worse time than those in torture movies.
09:47Their only purpose is to endure extreme pain and suffering for as long as possible,
09:52so if there are characters who'd pray for a speedy death,
09:55then, well, it would be these unfortunate souls.
09:58One such victim is the innocent Kena,
10:00an unlucky soul who finds herself at the mercy of a sadistic society
10:04that tortures tourists in Eli Roth's hostel.
10:07Later on in the flick, protagonist Paxton runs into Kena
10:10while fleeing from the shadowy group,
10:12and to our horror, a torturer is mutilating her face with a blowtorch.
10:16But after severing her damaged eyeball with a pair of scissors,
10:19the pair do manage to escape.
10:21Both survivors then have freedom in their grasp when they reach a train station,
10:25but before they're able to board a train,
10:27Kena catches a glimpse of her reflection.
10:30And at this point, the tourist decides that she'd rather take her own life
10:34by jumping in front of a train than live with the trauma of what she just experienced.
10:38Number 1. Wade, House of Wax
10:41Much like other Hollywood horror flicks from this time,
10:43the 2005 remake of House of Wax is a gloriously schlocky gorefest
10:48that catered specifically towards the cinematic zeitgeist.
10:51Though this horror starring Paris Hilton failed to make much of an impression on critics,
10:55it did have a successful run at the box office.
10:57Unlike the previous iterations,
10:59this version followed a group of teenagers
11:01who find themselves trapped in a ghost town
11:03where the main attraction is a wax museum that's literally made of wax.
11:07However, as one of the friends discovers,
11:09there's a reason that the waxworks look so lifelike.
11:13When invited into one of the locals' home,
11:15Wade is attacked and taken to the basement where he's paralyzed.
11:18Viewers then watch on as the completely helpless Wade
11:21is prepared to be transformed into a waxwork by the film's hulking villain.
11:25It's a long and painful process in which Wade is showered and encased within molten wax.
11:31However, when one of his friends eventually discovers this living waxwork and tries to save him,
11:35his flesh literally starts peeling off in the process
11:38and viewers learn the severity of Wade's fate.
11:41With no way to free him,
11:43Wade is already sealed in his own tomb.
11:46So that's our list.
11:47I want to let you guys think down in the comments below,
11:49what do you think about the fates of these characters
11:51and are there any others that you know that begged for death?
