Martin Dempster on last-day duel teed up in 89th Masters
Transcript
00:00Hello, it's Martin Dempster, the Scotsman Golf Correspondent here, coming to you from the press building at Augusta National at the end of a quite extraordinary third round in the 89th edition of the Masters.
00:15Rory McIlroy, who of course has been to complete a career Grand Slam by claiming a green jacket, started with a record-breaking six straight threes. Incredible stuff. That included a chip-in for an eagle at the second and the place really went wild as McIlroy, who'd started the second round on Friday, seven shots off the lead before shooting
00:45and a 66 to haul himself back into contention. Went from two shots behind at the start of the day and suddenly was in a four-shot lead. In his own words, he had a bit of a wobble around the turn, but after steadying the ship with a birdie at the par 5, 13th, the Northern Irishman produced a wonder shot with a six iron at the 15th,
01:13hitting it to six feet to set up his second eagle of the day to post a 12-under par clubhouse target. He was back into a four-shot lead at one point, but Bryson DeChambeau, the man who pipped McIlroy in last year's US Open at Pinehurst,
01:34he birdied the 16th, then rolled in a 50-footer across the green at the last, where he held a second shot in the corresponding round last year to move to within two shots.
01:47So it promises to be a last-day duel here at Augusta that could match the famous 1977 duel in the sun at Turnberry between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson,
02:01and an equally thrilling last-day contest between Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson in the 2016 Open.
02:10Canadian Corey Connors, he's in third place, while Scottish Sheffield, the defending champion and winner of this event twice in the last three years,
02:22he starts out seven shots off the lead.
02:25A great last day in store.
02:28Can it be a day of destiny for Rory McIlroy, as he bids to become just a sixth player to complete a career Grand Slam,
02:37or will Bryson DeChambeau prove his nemesis once again?
