00:00Hey, how you doing? My name is Danny O'Dwyer and about seven years ago I started a mission
00:04to try and demystify the world of games development, the only way I know how, by starting a YouTube
00:10channel that made unofficial documentaries about how those games were made.
00:15Since then, thanks to our community of patrons, Noclip has been travelling around the world,
00:19talking to developers, both big and small, about the reality of making games.
00:25The reason I did this is because I used to have a show back on GameSpot.com called The Point,
00:30where I would wax lyrical about how I thought games should be designed, because who knows
00:34more about game design than a video editor.
00:38As somebody who had a job talking about games, I thought I knew what I was talking about.
00:42But then when I'd interview actual developers about those same issues, it made me realise
00:46I knew a lot less than I thought.
00:48So I quit the show, and GameSpot, and started Noclip to try and better understand how games
00:53are created, to hand the microphone over to developers to tell their side of the story,
00:58to learn the basics, how studios are run, the different specialities it takes, how things
01:02like local culture affect design, and the human stories behind the games we play.
01:06Well, it's been seven years of forcing developers to answer my questions, so I feel like I've
01:11learned a little bit, at least enough to jump back on the video essay saddle.
01:16But truth be told, making video essays takes time and money, and I could never really justify
01:20the budget of doing self-indulgent opinion videos when there are just so many game dev
01:25stories for Noclip to tell.
01:27But as fate would have it, A16Z Games reached out, as investors in dozens of game studios
01:32they wanted a way to better showcase the development and business lessons behind modern games.
01:38So I had an idea.
01:39Hey, A16Z Games, you're a venture capital firm, you like investing in new ideas.
01:45How about you hire me to make a monthly video essay show, one that tackles the big questions
01:50facing developers today.
01:52One that looks not only at design, but also marketing, business development, and the challenges
01:56facing developers today and tomorrow.
01:59And they said sure, and I said okay, and I had a logo made, and I wrote a script, and we
02:04filmed some boxes, and interviewed some people, and I made the first episode.
02:08And also this trailer.
02:09So if you liked my opinion shows in the past, or you're a Noclip subscriber and want something
02:13a little bit extra, make sure you're subbed to A16Z Games' YouTube channel to catch monthly
02:19episodes of my brand new show, By Design.
02:22The first episode focuses on the success of Baldur's Gate 3, how exactly it happened, the
02:28history of Larian Studios, the state of the role-playing games market, and what it means
02:33for the future of AAA RPGs.
02:37That's By Design with me, Danny O'Dwyer, coming soon to A16Z Games.
02:44And today, we will go down a few minutes later.
02:47And after that, we have acierge with my friends and millionaires in Breeze Valley.
02:48This episode will be set with you in two weeks.
02:49And since it is known to be believable, the world is Wyandwe was有點 much tiets along
02:51with a lot of countries.
02:53And who docile fromcient we overr researching?
02:55This is reason for this.
02:56We have no endroit where people are born.
02:57That's a possibility.
02:58By design.
02:58This episode will 없 Devore.
03:00But your question was also one word.
03:03You know, what we had last year, how many months did we go?
