04:09The tariffs, this is a major tool in order to rebalance the international state of affairs with respect to the economy.
04:19The United States economy is in bad shape.
04:22We have $37 trillion in debt, $2 trillion structural deficit.
04:27We can't stay on this course.
04:29And so he is taking his political capital and making long-term fixes.
04:35The announcement of the tariffs and then this 90-day pause makes total sense because what happened in the interim was $6 trillion of commitment of foreign investment into the United States and counting.
04:48Moreover, 75 countries came forward and said to the White House, let us talk to you about how we can rebalance our relations here.
04:58So the 90 days is necessary to sit down and make deals.
05:02That's exactly what they're going to be doing.
05:03And this is the time for countries to come in not only with a trade deal but also security and what they can do to advance freedom in the rest of the world.
05:12So you don't share the opinion that he was forced to de-suspension because of the decline in the markets?
05:20Not at all.
05:21No, they knew that was always going to be a challenge and that's why no one's ever had the courage to do this work.
05:27But he's looking long-term.
05:29I mean, if nowhere else you come to ancient Greece, we should all be looking longer-term on things.
05:34You know, this has been 3,000 years of the elements of democracy and you're talking about the unfolding of a week here.
05:41I think that people need to really understand Trump and the necessity.
05:47He's foremost about the American people.
05:51This is a promise he made to them to bring back jobs and this is how it's going to happen.
05:56So what happens if the 90 days period expires and we don't have a deal?
06:03Countries, blocks like the European Union, what will they face?
06:08Well, I can only speak for what I think would happen.
06:11I'm not a member of the admin and, you know, in my personal capacity, knowing how President Trump thinks,
06:18I think you're going to face harder consequences.
06:21This is the time to make the deal.
06:24When he set out to do this, he did it fairly.
06:26He didn't go full tilt.
06:29He put things at a 50% rate and then when he saw the response, he even paused it.
06:36So I think this is a great generosity on his part and the time to come forth in good faith, no games, and get things done.
06:45But, you know, he has set the floor and he's set the ceiling for this and the ceiling could go higher.
06:51What he also focused the world on is that there is the kind of elephant in the room with China.
06:59And that's been a major problem in terms of, you know, historically their admission into the WTO and the beginning of this mass deindustrialization.
07:09I would like to talk a bit about China.
07:12Many fear that this is a breaking point between the two countries.
07:17Do you share that view?
07:19And they say that it will totally disrupt the global order as we know it so far.
07:24I don't believe that.
07:26You know, I believe it's a tightening on China and President Trump's serious.
07:31He's going to use the power of the United States.
07:33We have the global market.
07:35We are the consumers.
07:36And, you know, in a sense, yes, there's a large debt.
07:40But, you know, one of the things you think about when you have a debt is if you have a small debt, you have a problem with the bank.
07:49If you have a large debt, the bank has a problem.
07:52So, you know, here we are the consumers.
07:56There is a large debt.
07:57But we are also, you know, the superpower.
08:00And I think that this is President Trump using the power of the United States and bringing the world along with him.
08:08Practically nowadays the whole world talks about Trump.
08:11But you had the privilege to work with him.
08:13Could you tell us what type he is, what kind of person he is?
08:17Some people say he is inconsistent or he changes his mind or he is very spontaneous.
08:25Do you share that with him?
08:26Well, you know, I had the honor to serve under him.
08:29And I had limited, very limited personal interaction with him.
08:32But I've always been a Trump fan.
08:34You know, I grew up in New York City.
08:36My family came from there.
08:37And he was one of the real spirits who turned around New York.
08:40And it's that kind of indomitable ability to relate to the common man but actually get things done.
08:48You know, going all the way back to the Wallman skating rink.
08:52He is indefatigable.
08:54The man works like nobody else.
08:56He puts us all to shame in terms of stamina.
08:59Sleeps three hours a night.
09:00And if you look at the pace of what he does, you know, it's somebody who is not just a businessman.
09:08But he will make just decision after decision after decision.
09:12He's not happy unless he's doing 20 things at once.
09:15So I think that that's the tribute to him.
09:18I think he's also very fair.
09:21And he is one to reassess if things are going in the wrong direction.
09:28But that's not what's happening here.
09:29More than that, he has the courage to stick with his principles in a way that when everyone is saying nay, he ends up being right in the long term.
09:39Think about the embassy in Jerusalem when he announced, I'm moving the U.S. embassy out of Tel Aviv and putting it in Jerusalem.
09:48The world said, oh, all the advanced thinkers, this is going to precipitate World War III.
09:54World War III didn't happen.
09:55What happened?
09:56The Abraham Peace Accords.
09:57He is an unorthodox thinker.
10:00And he upsets this.
10:02He's an iconoclast.
10:03And that's what really makes him effective.
10:06Last question.
10:07Bilateral relations between Greece and the United States have always been close.
10:11Do you see this positive momentum continuing with the new Trump administration?
10:16You know, I kind of joke that I grew up in New York and worked there.
10:20And, you know, it's kind of a little bit of a Greek city state, if you will, parts of Queens.
10:25And so I think President Trump has a deep personal respect for Greeks.
10:29He's been around them his whole life.
10:31This is a country who has a special relationship with the United States.
10:34You know, we are radically different, the supporters of President Trump and President Trump administration, than what was happening with Biden.
10:42You know, if that's unfortunate, if people went full tilt here for Biden, we see the world in a different way.
10:48That said, you know, the Greeks have led the way in many years.
10:53The kind of, the saying goes, you know, apart from natural phenomenon, nothing moves in the world that isn't Greek in origin.
11:00So I think you have a great opportunity here.
11:03You have a tremendous pick in American ambassador, in Ambassador Guilfoy.
11:10And you have someone there who has the ear of Trump.
11:13And I would treat her very well.
11:15She is a key messenger to bring things back to him.
11:19And he's going to pick up the phone when she calls and listens.
11:21So I think Greece should take advantage of that.
11:26But really internalize the messaging.
11:28This is not a thing to fight.
11:30It's something to really embrace.
11:32And we are, like I said, this is a rebirth of democracy.
11:36He is really bringing the power of the people back into the government.
11:40And that's really what it's all about, self-governance.
11:42Thank you so much.
11:44Greatly appreciate it.
11:45My pleasure.
11:45Thank you.
11:46Thank you.
