00:00The Mayor of London has revealed which London schools will benefit from his £2.9 million Greener Schools programme, which aims to install solar panels, heat pumps and other technology across the capital.
00:14A total of 38 schools in 16 boroughs will receive funding through the pilot, with councils contributing an extra £9.6 million to the project as well.
00:26City Hall said it believed the scheme could save schools an average of almost £15,000 on their energy bills as a result of the measures, which also include insulation and LED lighting.
00:40The funding will also enable sustainability projects to take place, such as water conservation, Sir Sadiq Khan's team has confirmed as well.
00:49Sir Sadiq Khan said he hoped to eventually see the project adopted by the government as part of a scaled up national scheme.
00:58He argued that if all of London schools were to use similar energy saving interventions, this could save up to £50 million annually from the education budget.
01:09The Mayor's office pointed out the scheme has inspired aspects of the government's Great British Energy Project, which it announced last month.
01:17We'll see rooftop solar panels installed at 200 schools and 200 hospitals.
01:23But what do Londoners think of the Greener School scheme?
01:27I definitely think it's very good for schools to be using green energy to save the environment and also to help them save money because they need it in their budget.
01:38As long as they can, the rest of that, the savings go back into education, that will make a difference.
01:45Also, it's important for the children to understand how much they're contributing to making a difference and hopefully they carry that on into their lives.
01:57Yeah, I think if it's cost effective and it reduces the amount of emissions, reduces pollution and it just sets an example for the school children that they're actually helping to reduce, their school is helping to reduce and at the end of the day it's for their future.
02:16So it gets them in mind to start doing the work to save their own future, I guess.
02:22Yeah, it's good for schools.
02:23I think it's important. I know it's unpopular, but I do think it's important.
02:28There's so much, I mean, we read so much about people living in densely populated areas where children are asthmatic and have major health problems as a result of the toxic environment.
02:42So, yeah, I do think it's important.
02:43I have a lot of sympathy with him because I'm sure there's a big glory going past now.
02:51You know, he's unpopular, but I think that it's important that he does it.
