00:00All right, my guy, David Grubb, speaking of Grubb, is down in New Orleans.
00:04And I got to tell you, dude, it's good to see you.
00:08I went.
00:09Always a pleasure.
00:10Listen, I went the first night I got to New Orleans.
00:14I went to Mr. B's.
00:16And I mean to tell you, I ate like $500 worth of everything.
00:23I mean, I had jambalaya.
00:24I had, I had, I must have eaten 300 oysters.
00:30Every kind of oyster known to man.
00:31I drank like so many, they had to carry me out of the place.
00:35I mean, the food there was so good.
00:38The gumbo.
00:39I honestly, I thought, I thought I was going to have sex with the restaurant itself.
00:45Like just the restaurant itself.
00:46I was going to make love to it because they couldn't get me out of there.
00:50And in fact, I had so much fun and they had so much fun with me there.
00:54They started giving me stuff.
00:55They're like, Pharrell, have some dessert.
00:57And they just kept bringing out stuff to me to eat.
01:01And then, and then, and then Carver High told me, he said, yo, you got to go to Acme Oyster
01:06Bar.
01:07So I stroll over there on night two with Mafia here.
01:10And we ate like literally a thousand oysters.
01:14I had, I had grilled, I had broil, I had raw, I had bay, I mean, I had crab meat on top.
01:23I had Parmesan cheese and crab meat.
01:27I drank like a hundred shots.
01:29I mean, honestly, that's the greatest food town.
01:33I mean, Vegas, New York City are on another level.
01:35But for real freak, delicious food, it's knowledge.
01:41Yeah.
01:42I think that, you know, New Orleans, as far as food goes, this is, you know, people call
01:45this the gas station city.
01:46Cause like when you come down here, we have gas stations that produce better food than
01:50a lot of restaurants.
01:50When you go to other places, it's just, food is just part of the culture in a way that
01:55it isn't anywhere else in the world.
01:56It is, it is how we express our affection to each other.
01:59And you grew up in a city, you know, if you have people that you care about, you learn
02:03how to cook a great meal for them.
02:04I mean, dude, like I've never, I don't even care about the Superbowl.
02:09I was like, that's why this should be a city every four years.
02:14New Orleans should be a host for the Superbowl every four years.
02:16It's automatic.
02:17And it's just such a party.
02:19I mean, it is hardcore.
02:21I had a blast anyway.
02:22Although I am not impressed.
02:25In fact, you're going to hate me for saying this.
02:27I don't even think they deserve to have the NBA there anymore.
02:30It's so bad.
02:30It's so bad there that that team has gotten so, the way they run it is a disaster.
02:37And then they fired Griffin today.
02:39What is going on with their NBA team down there?
02:42Because I think it's like, almost like on fire.
02:47The Pelicans are in a perpetual state of malaise.
02:52You know, it's just, and I think you're right in the sense that, you know, what direction
02:57is this team going in?
02:58The six years of David Griffin were ultimately a failure.
03:02The hope and optimism that came with the drafting of Zion Williamson, all of that is gone now.
03:08And I think that there are people, the organization, the fan base, everyone is just incredibly divided
03:13on what the next step should be because this team has never charted a clear course.
03:18And you could say that's been the story for the entirety of the Benson regime.
03:23Since they've taken over, this team has only won one playoff series.
03:28Since this team has been in New Orleans, they've won a grand total of two playoff series.
03:32And yes, they've squandered some of the best players that you possibly could name.
03:37When you talk about giving up on Chris Paul so early in his career, he's played twice as long the rest of his career in other places than he did in New Orleans.
03:45But New Orleans has never been as successful as it was with him to watch Anthony Davis go and win a championship to watch Drew Holiday to win two championships in other places.
03:54Even J.J. Reddick, who was a player in New Orleans, going on and being a successful head coach somewhere else.
03:59Look at him.
04:00It's just, it's so frustrating.
04:04And it's kind of like, and the interest, the arena is bad.
04:09The interest is waning.
04:11There just needs to be an injection of life and energy and hope.
04:15Because this is kind of like what the Clippers were from the 80s through almost 2000.
04:20You know, when it's just, they were constantly getting number one picks.
04:23They were, occasionally they would make the playoffs like when they had that team with Doc Rivers and Ron Harper and stuff like that.
04:29And you would think they were going to get out of it.
04:30But the Clippers were going to be the Clippers.
04:33And I think that, you know, that's what the Pelicans are, is that people just expect no matter what advantages that you give the New Orleans Pelicans, they will find a way to squander it.
04:41So listen, I'm down there, right?
04:42And I'm chilling the most.
04:43And I swear to God, I said this, we were in the van, like, I don't know, going, whatever.
04:52Mafia may have been with me or not.
04:53I said, listen, this team, we drove out of the arena and went, man, no one even cares about this team.
04:59I go, like, all people care about here is eating and going out and good music and eating and getting effed up.
05:07There is no one that wants to go to those games.
05:10Their franchise is dead in the water.
05:12You might as well be in the middle of the Mississippi drowning.
05:15I think it's in trouble.
05:16Like, I legitimately think they're in trouble.
05:19Like, there are a lot of cities that want NBA teams.
05:22And I think, respectfully, because I really like your town, I think I've been there for a lot.
05:28I've been there for a lot of Super Bowls.
05:30I've been there for a lot of NCAA basketball championships.
05:33The favorite of mine, Indiana, beating Syracuse in 87, the last game I ever covered for Bob Knight.
05:37I love New Orleans.
05:39But I think they got a problem.
05:41I really do.
05:42I said to Mafia Redunner, I go, there's no reason for this franchise to be here anymore.
05:46It's dead.
05:49And I think that the foot of that falls mostly at what the ownership has been.
05:54You know, I remember when this team moved here, George Shin, who's one of the worst owners in NBA history, really did a horrible job insulting the ground, just kind of burning bridges with people.
06:05He made no friends locally.
06:06Then the league goes into the team goes into receivership where the league owns them for a couple of years.
06:12And then you sell to the Bensons on the cheap because they were the only people locally who kind of had any money.
06:17And they've not really treated this team the way it should be.
06:20You know, they've been, as has been reported plenty of times, treated as the stepchild to the New Orleans Saints.
06:27This is a community at a state that has a rich basketball history.
06:33Louisiana has one of the best basketball histories you could look at.
06:36And yet there has never been a sustained success for basketball.
06:41Whether you talk about the New Orleans Jazz, they were never treated properly while here playing in the cavernous Superdome or playing in, you know, ballrooms and things like that.
06:50They weren't, they weren't treated properly.
06:52So they leave and go to Utah where they've had success by and large.
06:56Now with the Pelicans slash Hornets, again, bad ownership, bad leadership, bad decisions.
07:02I can tell you that I've heard from some fans who have said, maybe we just don't do basketball well professionally.
07:09I've even had people say, could we trade the basketball team for a hockey team?
07:14This is New Orleans.
07:15And people are asking about a hockey team.
07:18That's how bad it's got.
07:19That's hilarious.
07:21I have to ask you, Dave, that I like Zion.
07:26I think he's just a monster.
07:28And when he's healthy, he's unstoppable.
07:30He does whatever he wants.
07:32He will dunk on your face and sleep with your girlfriend.
07:35I mean, he gets what he wants when he's healthy in place.
07:37They have treated him like a bitch down there.
07:40Like he's some kind of soft ass cream puff, like never playing him and everything else.
07:45You can't tell me that brother doesn't want out of there.
07:48I think that this, you know, next decision is the only decision.
07:53You have three years remaining on Zion's contract.
07:57So essentially, if you decide that you're going to ride with him and you better fully commit to this, you better say next season time, we're putting the ball in your hands.
08:04There's no problem here with Brandon Ingram anymore.
08:07This is not a split organization.
08:09This is your team.
08:10And you can choose now to lead us or you can choose to leave.
08:13And I think that that ultimately the lottery pick is going to make that decision for the Pelicans.
08:17If you get the number one pick in Cooper flag, I think that's an indicator that you need to do a full rebuild.
08:22If you're still in the top four, I think that discussion is still on the table.
08:25But if you fall beyond the top, outside of the top four, then I think you have Zion Williamson for the next three years.
08:31You need to figure this out and you need to build a team that works for him.
08:34And the Pelicans have never built a team that was suited for Zion Williamson.
08:39Hell, how many number one picks do you know that didn't get introduced last, you know, as part of the starting lineup until after Brandon Ingram left?
08:47Zion Williamson was not the last player introduced until Brandon Ingram left.
08:51So that tells you the way he's been treated here.
08:54And I think that's been a big problem.
08:56Listen, I love you.
08:57You're awesome.
08:58Mafia, what were those things you got me in the morning to eat those baguettes or whatever they are?
09:02What are they with the powder?
09:02Vignets.
09:03Oh, listen, those vignets.
09:04He gave me 30 of them one morning to try to kill me.
09:08And I ate all 30 of them.
09:10I ate all 30.
09:11I ate all 30 of them, David Brown.
