00:09and shows the most detailed map ever created of Earth's gravity field.
00:15While this sounds like an elaborate joke, we're actually serious.
00:20Earth isn't flat, but it's not perfectly round either.
00:24Earth's rotation causes the planet to bulge at the equator and flatten at the poles,
00:30while the distribution of mass on Earth, which is not perfectly uniform,
00:35causes small variations in the gravitational pull at different locations on the planet.
00:41These variations are too small to be seen in pictures of Earth from space,
00:46so it appears round to the human eye.
