Senior councillors are to be briefed on a major regeneration vision which could see Leeds United’s iconic Elland Road home become one of the country’s largest football stadiums.

00:03Elland Road has been Leeds United's home ground for 106 years,
00:08and proposals to increase capacity to 56,500 seats have been put forward by the Beeston-based club.
00:15The major regeneration vision will be discussed at a meeting of Leeds City Council's Executive Board
00:20on Wednesday 23rd April, where members will be updated on a package of ambitious plans
00:26that would transform a key part of South Leeds.
00:29These include an imminent planning application from Leeds United
00:32to increase their famous grounds capacity by around 18,500 seats,
00:38a move that, if approved, would see it join the ranks of the nation's elite sporting venues.
00:43Land immediately surrounding the stadium is owned by Leeds City Council,
00:47meaning agreements will need to be in place between the council and the club
00:50before any expansion can begin.
00:52A report to the Executive Board details the vast potential of the club's upcoming application
00:57in the context of the wider Elland Road area, comprising around 30 acres of council-owned land
01:03which could be transformed and regenerated, with billions of pounds of investment then being unlocked.
01:10With a potential mass-rapid transit link for South Leeds,
01:13the report outlines a unique opportunity for Elland Road to become a year-round destination,
01:18potentially giving a boost to the local economy,
01:22while supporting the council's broader inclusive growth ambitions.
01:25This and other projects sit alongside existing economic hubs
01:29at the White Rose Shopping Centre and White Rose Park.
01:32At the upcoming meeting, members will be asked to note
01:34the huge potential of the Elland Road regeneration project
01:37and to approve the start of legal agreements to dispose of council land to the club
01:42which would be needed for the stadium enhancement.
