00:00When Salvation Army founder William Booth wanted to get a message out to all of his officers worldwide that would encapsulate Salvation Army mission and ministry, he chose one word to send in a global telegram, Others.
00:18The Others Award honors individuals or organizations that exemplify an extraordinary spirit of service to others. Peter Smythe exhibits dedication and compassion through exceptional service benefiting the community.
00:32Peter's commitment to helping others can be seen and heard throughout the company's 21 radio properties located across the country, including WROR, Country 102.5, Magic 106.7, Radio 92.9, and Hot 96.9 FM in Boston.
00:49Under his leadership, Greater Media, with its headquarters based in Braintree, Massachusetts, has been a longtime supporter of the Salvation Army's mission to provide food, housing, and children's programs, among other initiatives, for the needy.
01:02As a result, the company has supported the organization's efforts over the years in Boston, Charlotte, Detroit, New Jersey, and Philadelphia.
01:11Upon learning of the organization's plans to build the Salvation Army Ray and Joan Crott Core Community Center of Boston, Peter was inspired and enlisted the help of legendary WROR morning personalities Lauren and Wally.
01:25Always quick to lend a helping hand, the duo went on the air encouraging their listeners to get involved and help others create hope for a better tomorrow.
01:34As a result, they raised over $40,000.
01:36Wally and I have worked with Peter for over 20 years, so it didn't come as any surprise to us when the Salvation Army said, can you help?
01:44He not only said, yeah, he said, what else can we do?
01:47So, he came to us and said, what do you think we can do to raise some money?
01:51So, we went to our listeners, as we always do, and we said, can you help out?
01:56You bet, they did, and to this very day, I still display proudly my crock brick.
02:03Greater media radio stations and personalities have also participated in Red Kettle campaigns over the years to support the Salvation Army in doing the most good for others during their time of need to make change happen.
02:16Peter Smythe has always really stressed to us as a company that it's about family.
02:21It's about relationships and taking care of people.
02:23So, it's natural for the personalities here at the radio station to go out and work the Red Kettle campaign, because when people recognize that Red Kettle, they immediately realize, Salvation Army, they're helping people, whether it's food, shelter, or clothing.
02:36And it's really an easy way, a simple way, to help a lot of people.
02:40We have an expression in my house, of much is given, much is expected.
02:44And this is something my parents taught us from a very early age, to make sure that we were giving back to the community, that we were part of the community, and that we were working within the communities we lived.
02:52And it's something my father did throughout his life at Greater Media, but also in our house.
02:56And it's something that has always made me so proud of my parents, and something why I'm so honored for my dad today to be winning the Others Award.
03:02So, Dad, congratulations.
03:04Thank you for allowing me to be involved in the journey, and I'm proud to be your son.
03:07A proud husband, father, and grandfather to six grandchildren, he's been recognized by countless non-profit organizations over the years throughout the Commonwealth for his commitment to the community.
03:18Caring, compassionate, and committed.
03:21Peter Smythe, an exemplary leader, a generous friend, and a true champion for Boston.
