00:00Hey, it's Joanna from The Jell-O Show on 105.1 The Bounce, Detroit's throwback hip-hop and R&B.
00:07I'm excited today. I have two fabulous people sitting next to me.
00:10On my left, I have Alex Lewis, former Lion, former Wisconsin Badger.
00:16I'm going to get to that later. A little Michigan State, a little Badger talk.
00:20And on my right, I have Miss Paloma Blaines, owner of Mayweather Boxing and Fitness.
00:25Tell me a little bit about it. How did you get involved in this?
00:28Well, it's been, 2020's been a year for everybody, right?
00:32So for us, it started off where we were, we both have full-time jobs, my husband and I, and the pandemic hit.
00:39So we were kind of like, oh, you're not allowed to work. Okay, great.
00:42So we're sitting at home twiddling our thumbs and we're like, okay, let's see what we can do with our time.
00:47He looked over already open businesses, nothing looked promising.
00:52So then he ran into Mayweather Boxing and Fitness online, looking through different options.
00:57And next thing you know, we're in LA, looking over everything, meeting with the CEO, loving the workout.
01:04You know, we always follow Floyd Mayweather. He's been a great boxer, obviously 50-0.
01:11So we're like, all right, let's check this out, check that out.
01:14And what are we in now, October? And we're opening up our gym in a couple months.
01:19I know, so you don't have an exact date yet, but it's early December.
01:21It's going to be early December.
01:22But people can sign up now, right?
01:24Correct. So they can go up, call us, and sign up.
01:27And our phone number is 248-469-0002.
01:32And we have membership advisors answering the phone and signing you up right now with a really good zero-down special that we still have.
01:39And I had the pleasure of visiting.
01:42And I love it because everything is new and fresh.
01:44And I tried on the gloves, which are so fun.
01:46And you're going to offer a couple different classes, right?
01:49Correct. So we're going to offer three different style of classes.
01:53We have a HIIT class, which is more cardio-based.
01:56Then we have a strength class.
01:58Then we have a combination class.
02:00So that's the best of both worlds.
02:02The HIIT class is 45 minutes.
02:03The strength is 45 minutes.
02:05And the combination is a full hour.
02:07Okay. And I know that you can burn up to like 800 to 1,000 calories.
02:10Correct.
02:10So sign me up.
02:11Yes.
02:11Please sign me up.
02:12Yes.
02:13All right. I'm going to get to you, Alex.
02:15Obviously, you have a love for football.
02:16Yes, I do.
02:17Now, how did you get into training?
02:20I got out of football.
02:21And I was actually in the corporate world.
02:23Got way out of shape.
02:24Let's be honest.
02:25I had four kids.
02:26I was working a nine-to-five job.
02:31And I totally let myself slip.
02:33I went.
02:34You probably would look at me now.
02:35I'm like, yeah, you're right.
02:35But I had pictures showing.
02:37I was actually close to that.
02:38But you do look in shape right now.
02:39Right, yeah.
02:40But at that time, I was close to 300 pounds.
02:43Way out of shape.
02:44And I mean, it's something that says, you know, you look good, feel good.
02:48We say that in football, look good, feel good, play good.
02:50At the time, like I said, I didn't feel good.
02:52I actually looked in the mirror at myself and I said, where did you go?
02:56You know, so from there, it was actually New Year's almost over a year and a half ago.
03:01And I just said, you know, I'm going to be committed.
03:03I took it one day at a time as far as getting myself back in shape.
03:06And boxing is what really helped me to get back in shape.
03:09So I did the boxing before my job because I was doing it for cross training for football.
03:14But from there, I used it as a way of making things more exciting to work out again.
03:19Now, for people like myself who work out occasionally, I need to do it more.
03:24You look like you work out more than occasionally.
03:28But I've never trained in boxing.
03:30Yeah.
03:30Is this something that anyone, like a first-timer, can do?
03:33Let me tell you this.
03:34We've been having boot camps for the past three weeks.
03:37We've had a guy who had open heart surgery come out, come learn boxing techniques and almost knocked me out.
03:44I'm just being honest.
03:45And then we had the person who has been seasoned, who's been to other gyms and been doing the boot camps with us.
03:51And we, at Floyd Mayweather Boxing, we are more technical focused.
03:56So we're giving them more technique, the technical aspects, and they learn a lot there.
04:00So it's the person who's well-seasoned and also the person who has never boxed before and says, look, I've never done this before.
04:07I've been on a radio show.
04:08I've been in a model probably like you.
04:10This is my first time.
04:12Well, thank you.
04:13But, yeah, this is for anybody.
04:15And, like I said, this is the big thing about boxing.
04:18It's exciting.
04:19You know, it's an exciting workout.
04:21Now, what is your motivation to keep going and how do you motivate others?
04:26Because I can get lazy.
04:27I get so lazy.
04:29See, the thing about it, even they ask me, say, aren't you tired?
04:32I say, I'm not tired because this is naturally me.
04:34I love to see people meet their goals.
04:37I know how it is to be totally in shape.
04:39I know how it is to be totally out of shape.
04:41I know how it is to need encouragement myself.
04:44So, I mean, it's already inside of me to encourage other people to reach their goals.
04:48So it's just naturally me.
04:49So that's what moves me as far as in this field.
04:52Now, does it help when you're hitting the, you know, the boxing?
04:57Oh, my God, what's it called?
04:58The bag.
04:58Yeah, yeah, the bag.
04:59Oh, my God, I thought there was a special job.
05:01Now, can you envision someone like your husband or something when you're hitting it?
05:05So, yeah, I don't want to do that.
05:08I mean, you can, whatever your motivation is.
05:10You know, my motivation is basically, A, reach your goal.
05:14A lot of people that come in there, it may be, you may be stressed out.
05:18And, I mean, that stress is coping sometimes.
05:21You go in there, you hit the bag, you walk out, you feel great, you did a workout.
05:25And, like I said, it could be the technical aspect where it's like, look, I really want to learn this thing.
05:29I got people that really want to learn how to box.
05:31Right.
05:32So, like I said, to each his own.
05:33Some people, it's more of a stress reliever.
05:35Cope, get off work, don't feel good.
05:38Or I've been in the house all day and this whole COVID thing has been driving me crazy.
05:42So, it's a way to get the stress off and also work at the same time.
05:46And for someone who's new, again, like me, because I am going to be signing up, so I'm trying to figure everything out.
05:52How often would you say when you start off would you come in and train?
05:55So, new, like I said, come in as often as you want.
05:58But my thing is, this is exactly how the Floyd Mayweather banner is.
06:03You know, before you build a building, you've got to build a foundation first.
06:06So, we start out with the feet first.
06:08Then from there, we work our way up to the stands.
06:10So, we work our way up to the punches.
06:12So, no matter where you are, we're going to get you where you need to be.
06:15By the time you leave the gym, you're going to look like a Golden Gloves fan.
06:19I'm just being honest with you.
06:20And I actually picked out the Gold Gloves because they're so cute.
06:23Now, a different question.
06:25Let me ask you real quick.
06:26Let's go.
06:26Lions are 2-3.
06:27How are they going to finish the rest of the season?
06:29See, normally I would say no comment.
06:32You know, because we're in the Mayweather atmosphere right now.
06:36But you know what?
06:36The one thing I'll say about Lions football, it's not more so just Lions football.
06:41It's just the Michigan in itself.
06:43Like I said, I'm a Wisconsin badge.
06:45On Wisconsin.
06:46I'm sorry.
06:47But Michigan has showed me love since I've been here.
06:50Michigan's fans are ride or die.
06:53Oh, aren't they?
06:53They are.
06:53They're going to be against you.
06:54Next year, they're going to act like, hey, you're the greatest thing in the world.
06:58Yes.
06:58So, like I said, I'm always rooting for the Lions, the Lions organization.
07:01They still, I'm still a part of the veterans organization there.
07:04Brandon Scott, who does the community affairs there.
07:07So, I still have ties with them.
07:08So, I really wish them the greatest.
07:10Yes, I do too.
07:11We are a diehard Lion family.
07:12And one Wisconsin question.
07:14Oh, here we go.
07:152011, because I'm a Spartan, Hail Mary to Keith Nichol.
07:21Yeah.
07:21And he was right on the line.
07:22Was he in?
07:24Did we win?
07:25Uh-uh, uh-uh, uh-uh.
07:29I'm sorry.
07:30Can I say go green?
07:31No, I do.
07:32Hey, all in Wisconsin.
07:33That's all I got to say.
07:34But once again, Big Ten love, though, all the way around.
07:37So, like I said, I got love for Michigan.
07:39I got love for Wisconsin.
07:41Big Ten love all around.
07:42Now, I just want to know, because I would be excited, will Floyd ever be coming in?
07:46Will we ever get to meet him?
07:47No, we hope so.
07:49We're going to bring him in.
07:50Yeah, we're going to bring him in.
07:51We're optimistic here.
07:52Yes.
07:52We're going to bring Floyd Mayweather room.
07:53Yes.
07:53Even if I got to get in the rain and fight.
07:56We're going to bring him in.
07:57Now, that would be fun to watch.
07:59All right, so you are accepting new clients right now.
08:02You can sign up now.
08:03Give that phone number again, please.
08:04So, our phone number is 248-469-0002.
08:09And it's going to get going in December.
08:10Correct.
08:11I'm going to sign up and save me a pair of the gold gloves.
08:14Okay.
08:14Because I'm super excited.
08:15I will.
08:16And you have a passion for working out as well?
08:18I do.
08:18I've always worked out throughout my life, like 15, you know, all the way to adulthood.
08:23And it's just, like he said, Alex said, it's a stress reliever.
08:27Yes.
08:27And, you know, you wake up sometimes feeling exhausted.
08:30I'm tired.
08:31And then you just get in that gym, whatever it is, 20 minutes, an hour, whatever you've
08:34got.
08:34And it just makes you a different person.
08:37You walk out feeling better.
08:38Yes.
08:38Yes.
08:38Yeah.
08:39All right.
08:40Phone number one more time.
08:41Sign up.
08:42This is going to be fun.
08:43I got to take a little tour.
08:45It's so different than any other gym.
08:46It's fresh.
08:47It's new.
08:47It's fun things that people haven't tried before.
