00:00Hey, it's Jeff Zito from 98.7 The Shark. And I love this one as we are counting down the top albums of 1984. We're talking legends. We're talking newcomers. We're talking thrash metal, college rock. Check it out.
00:13At number 10 is Bon Jovi's self-title debut. Back then they seemed like another pop metal band. Little did we know they'd still be headlining stadiums decades later. The Scorpions' Love at First Sting was their ninth album and our number nine.
00:27And thanks to monster hits like Rock You Like a Hurricane, Big City Nights, and the ballad Still Loving You, it made them superstars in the U.S.
00:35Number eight is Queen's The Works, which as the name implies has a bit of everything. Rockers like Hammer to Fall and pop hits like I Want to Break Free and Radio Gaga. The latter song inspired Lady Gaga's name.
00:47The Cars Heartbreak City comes in at number seven. It adds some of their biggest hits including Hello Again, Magic, Drive, and You Might Think.
00:54R.E.M. was one of the weirdest bands to get on the radio in 1984, but their album Reckoning was undeniable thanks to songs like So Central Rain and Don't Go Back to Rockville.
01:05It's our number six album. At number five is Rush's tenth album, Grace Under Pressure, with songs like Distant Early Warning and Red Sector A.
01:13They show that they were still going strong after more than a decade.
01:17U2 made the jump from alternative rockers to arena headliners, with The Unforgettable Fire, Pride and The Name of Love, and Bad remain two of their biggest crowd pleasers at their shows.
01:28Crash Metal hadn't yet hit the mainstream, but Metallica began to change that in 1984 with Ride the Lightning, for whom the Bell Tolls and their first ballad, Fade to Black, were undeniably great and are two reasons why the album is our number three.
01:42Number two, Van Halen was a huge rock band, but 1984 and Jump made them into pop superstars.
01:50They didn't lose any rock cred though, nor should they have, with classics like Hot For Teacher, Panama, and I'll Wait.
01:56The Boss, Bruce Springsteen, also went from rock star to pop star in 84.
02:00Our number one album of the year, Born in the USA, had something for everyone, with classics like Cover Me, I'm On Fire, Dancing in the Dark, and of course, the epic title track.
02:11Okay, that's our list. Did we miss anything?
