00:00Any other incidents, delays, or updates throughout the rest of the morning?
00:03Until then, ladies, I'll send it back to you.
00:04Jessica, thank you.
00:05Today, class is once again canceled at Florida State after police say a student opened fire
00:10right next to the student union.
00:12So two people have been confirmed dead and six others are injured.
00:16Tallahassee Memorial says all six of those in the hospital are in fair condition right now.
00:21Investigators say the two people who died were not students at the university.
00:25That's all the details we have about them.
00:27The alleged shooter was shot by police and is now in the hospital in custody.
00:31He's identified as Phoenix Eichner.
00:34Investigators say the gunman is the son of a Leon County Sheriff's deputy
00:37and used her gun during the shooting.
00:40The alleged shooter was also a long-standing member of the Leon County Sheriff's Office
00:46Citizen Advisory or Youth Advisory Council.
00:50We send a message to folks that this will never be tolerated here in Leon County.
00:56And I dare say across this state and across this nation.
01:01We have some new video for you this morning.
01:03It shows broken doors left behind after those SWAT teams, they forced their way into locked spaces.
01:09Officers, they just went room by room clearing out those buildings.
01:13Right now, though, a memorial is already appearing on that college campus.
01:16Students have been coming in, laying down flowers and candles and stuffed animals near one of those scenes.
01:21A vigil is planned for tonight at 5 o'clock.
01:24Right now, we want to get Fox 35's Marie Edinger, who has been following this story since yesterday.
01:29And she is live in Tallahassee this morning.
01:32Good morning, Marie.
01:35Good morning, Amy.
01:36You were just mentioning, along with Stephanie, the memorial that is behind me right now.
01:41This is just outside the Student Union.
01:43And it's been growing.
01:44It happened probably around last night, late into the evening, because we were here until about 11.30,
01:50and we saw a bunch of students coming in.
01:52It's still growing now.
01:53Actually, just a few moments ago, I talked with a girl who came by to leave some flowers here.
01:59A few others have stopped by as well.
02:01None of them have wanted to go on camera, though.
02:02A couple of them have been crying.
02:04They're still very shaken up by all of this.
02:07On the other side of the Student Union, there's a small memorial as well.
02:10That's right outside the front of the Student Union, or what would be considered the front, whereas this is the back.
02:17Last night, we were able to take a peek through the windows in that area, and we could see just how quickly people left.
02:25So on the table still, there were things like laptops and iPads that were still open.
02:32It looked like they'd been in use right up until the moment that people had to sprint away.
02:36When they heard that gunfire start going off, we saw handbags and backpacks and water bottles and just all sorts of things outside the Student Union.
02:45Last night, we saw a shoe left behind.
02:48This morning, we actually noticed several more.
02:50That's in the green outside of the Student Union.
02:52People sprinting away so quickly that they just lost their shoes and didn't have time to go back and get them.
02:58We also were able to talk with students who lived through this.
03:01Some said they barricaded themselves inside classrooms.
03:03Some talked about running away.
03:05You can hear their experience in their own words.
03:08I just hear gunshots.
03:09It was kind of surreal what was happening.
03:11We practiced for it, we trained for it, and it was kind of like, one, you know, just thinking of everything you've learned through the years on how to stay safe,
03:21and two, you know, how, one, like, if I have to get out of here, what are my ways out of here?
03:26If I have to defend myself, how can I defend myself?
03:29And just praying and, you know, hoping.
03:33It's just something, you know, we'll never get over, but we'll get through it, I guess.
03:41You heard that student there talking about the drills that they go through in grade school, trying to prepare for something like this.
03:48We heard several students yesterday saying, sure, they prepared in theory, but they never thought they'd actually live through it.
03:55I talked with a mother who said that same thing.
03:57She said that she was on the phone with her daughter while her daughter was on campus, trying to barricade herself inside.
04:05She described this one moment where she had to be on the phone with her daughter.
04:09While her daughter started running away, she's on the other line, she doesn't know what's happening.
04:12It was incredibly stressful for her.
04:15And she mentioned, too, that, yes, they had trained for it.
04:18They talked about the idea of an active shooter, but having actually experienced one is something else entirely.
04:23And, Amy, I understand that you actually know the girl.
04:26I was just talking about the mother who was on the phone with her daughter who was on campus at that time.
04:32Is that right?
04:32Yeah, it was frightening.
04:33And, Marie, I think one of the scariest things was that she said their teacher left.
04:37And so they were left in this classroom to sort of fend for themselves, not really knowing what they should do.
04:42And so they said there were three doors to the classroom that they did not have locks on them.
04:45And so they just, you know, put anything they could find, desks, chairs, tables in front of the doors.
04:50And then they said they were in there for about 90 minutes, of course, all of them on their phones, talking to their parents.
04:54And finally, the police came and got them, moved them to another building, and then moved them from there to a bus and took them into the Civic Center.
05:01And thank God they made it back home safely.
05:04But just so many stories like that.
05:05And, Marie, I wanted to ask you earlier, we could hear, it sounded like a lot of reporters around you.
05:09I imagine that there's a massive media presence there as well.
05:12There is.
05:16In the spot that I am now, it was pretty wall-to-wall.
05:19We're actually kind of in a side area.
05:21That's why you're getting the angle of the memorial that you have right now, rather than a straight-on view.
05:25We just wanted to have some space for everyone else.
05:27Earlier this morning, we were on the opposite side of the student union, as I mentioned.
05:31That area is packed and then sprinkled throughout campus.
05:34There are some other crews as well.
05:36We're trying to make sure that a tragedy like this has as many eyes on it as possible, just so people are aware of what's happening here and can maybe take action to stop it.
05:45Yeah, absolutely.
05:47And I know you got a chance to talk to Maura Binkley's dad yesterday as well.
05:50Maura was killed near Florida State in 2018, so our thoughts and prayers go out to him.
05:54He was there to talk about gun violence last night, ironically, on the day that this happened.
05:59So, Marie, thank you so much for your reporting, and we appreciate you very much for being there.
06:06Thank you so much, Marie, once again.
06:09Meanwhile, officials across the state and the country, they are also, of course, reacting to that shooting.
06:13The president called the shooting a horrible thing, also adding that he is unlikely to back any new gun control measures, saying he's an advocate of the Second Amendment.
06:23I'm a big advocate of the Second Amendment.
06:25I have been from the beginning.
06:27I've protected it.
06:28And these things are terrible.
06:31But the gun doesn't do the shooting.
06:34The people do.
06:35It's, you know, a phrase that's used probably too often.
06:38I will tell you that it's a shame.
06:44And Governor DeSantis also reacting.
06:46Of course, he is there in Tallahassee, and he posted this video on social media.
06:51Casey and I stand in solidarity and are praying for the entire Florida state community.
06:55We're mourning the two individuals who lost their lives in this tragic attack, and we wish well those who are currently recovering in the hospital.
07:05This killer must and will be brought to justice to the fullest extent of the law.
07:11I want to also thank the law enforcement personnel who were on the scene, both for the university as well as for the city of Tallahassee.
07:20They ran towards the danger.
07:22They stopped this killer from inflicting more harm.
07:25They had our ground for the government.
07:27But that's why I took it out if I were unable to address something, but in-ident charges on the ╪з┘И╪▒ financial aid and interest here.
07:35I want to come back.
07:36That's why we'll have a good question here.
07:38It's fine.
