00:00I just killed my mother. It wasn't me who killed her. It was Jeff.
00:09Oh God, no, no, no, no. This ain't up, man. This ain't up, man.
00:17He killed her. He's mapped.
00:21Shane. Shane.
00:23No, no, no.
00:27On Thursday, April 6, 2017, Shane Nicholas races toward home after getting word from a family member
00:35that there was a growing police presence at his house. He knows very little about the situation
00:40as he answers the distressing phone call that will change his life forever. The following report is
00:46based on police records and most of the audio has never been heard before until now.
00:51Hello. Hello, Mr. Nicholas.
00:53Come on, man. Everything's cold, right? Everything's okay. Please tell me. Everything's okay.
01:02Let me ask you something. Where are you now?
01:06Where are we at, man? Do you know? Old, minimal, Indiana.
01:13Are you driving right now?
01:15No, I'm not.
01:17Who's driving?
01:18Adam.
01:19Will you assure me that Adam will remain the driver?
01:23Yeah, I can't drive right now. I gotta tell what's going on.
01:25Alright, I'm gonna tell you.
01:27I'm so scared, sir. I'm so scared.
01:30Okay, sir. About 6 p.m. or so, maybe a little earlier, we responded to your house after receiving a call
01:38from a family member. There was some type of disturbance and your wife has fallen victim as a result of that incident
01:47and she's deceased. Oh, God. Oh, God. Oh, God.
01:54I've got, I've got process of what you're telling me here.
01:57I understand. Take your time.
01:59Oh, God. No, no, no, no, no. That's not what happened. It can't happen that way. It can't happen that way.
02:11Hours ago, at approximately 6 p.m., Champaign County dispatchers received the 911 call from Shane's 14-year-old son,
02:19though his haunting confession was the last thing anyone expected.
02:23911, where's your emergency?
02:26I just killed my mother.
02:29What happened, sir?
02:31I just killed my mother and I need to go to the hospital.
02:36Captain Loney assures Shane that his son is safe and in police custody, withholding the chilling reality of the situation.
02:43As Shane's panic rises, Loney begins to probe him for answers in an effort to shed light on the unfolding nightmare.
02:51Give me a little history on your son. And is his name, am I correct, is his name Donovan?
02:58Oh, God, yes. Yes, Donovan Asher Nicholas.
03:02What's his date of birth?
03:04Oh, God, I can't think he's 14 years old.
03:07Okay.
03:08What is it? I don't know. I don't know.
03:10Okay.
03:11Has he been in a behavior problem or anything to you?
03:14Never. The boy is soft-spoken. He's a genius. He's very, very smart. He's non-confrontational.
03:24Okay.
03:25He's never done anything.
03:28I didn't want to kill her.
03:32No, this is not happening. This is not happening.
03:35Has he ever inflicted harm to any family member or anything like that?
03:39Never.
03:40No harm to anyone?
03:42Never. None.
03:43Does he have friends and things of that nature?
03:46None. No, he does not.
03:49Okay, let me ask you something. Have you ever heard of someone by the name of Jeff?
03:54Jeff.
03:55Yeah.
03:56No.
03:57Okay, no Jeff.
03:59Anybody like Jeff? Anybody that sounds like Jeff?
04:03Somebody that he talks about, maybe idolizes, whatever, who knows, you know?
04:08No.
04:09Okay.
04:10Not at all.
04:11Why?
04:13The confusing question stems from Donovan's earlier admission to the 9-1-1 dispatcher as
04:18his confession takes a dark and twisted turn.
04:21It wasn't me who, who, it wasn't me who killed her.
04:25It was Jeff.
04:27What happened?
04:29Who did it?
04:30Jeff.
04:31Yeah.
04:32Yeah.
04:33I'm sorry, this is going to be really hard to explain, but I kind of have another person
04:39inside me.
04:40Like...
04:41What happened to your mom?
04:44He killed her.
04:46She's napped.
04:47Alright, are you able to say who's with you?
04:51I, I am by myself.
04:54Me and Jeff.
04:56But, I swear it wasn't me.
04:59It was, it was Jeff.
05:01Jeff, Jeff is inside me.
05:03Jeff is inside you?
05:06Yes.
05:07Okay.
05:08He sometimes takes, he sometimes takes control.
05:13And I have no, I have no control over him.
05:18I hate Jeff so much.
05:25He's, he, he's gonna make me die in prison.
05:30Investigators face the baffling mystery of why a child, whose father describes him as
05:35soft-spoken and harmless, would suddenly turn on his own mother.
05:39Could Jeff be real?
05:41Or is he simply a carefully crafted excuse?
05:44With many questions lingering, officers arrive at a scene straight from a nightmare.
05:49Donovan sits leaning against a wall in the kitchen, his white shirt drenched in blood.
05:54There are clear signs of a struggle, with large amounts of blood spattered across the walls, floors and appliances.
06:01When asked if anyone else is inside the home, Donovan chillingly replies, nobody that's alive.
06:07While some officers speak with Donovan, others begin their search for the victim, unaware of the horror that awaits them upstairs.
06:15Why did Jeff want to kill your mom?
06:17It's just the way he is.
06:20Has Jeff ever hurt anybody before?
06:22No.
06:23This is the first time.
06:24According to our analysis team at EWU, while investigators don't need parental consent to question a minor in Ohio,
06:31a Miranda waiver must be obtained if a minor is a suspect in a crime.
06:35If the Miranda waiver is not voluntary in any given case, anything learned in the interrogation cannot be used in criminal prosecution.
06:43How long has Jeff been in your head?
06:47That's about like three months.
06:49Upstairs, officers confront a horrifying scene.
06:5240-year-old Heidi Faye Taylor is found lying in her bed, deceased.
06:57The brutal nature of her wounds points to a vicious attack, raising daunting questions about exactly what transpired between Heidi and Donovan.
07:05Back in the kitchen, officers notice an unsettling injury to Donovan's face.
07:10Though they ask him about it, he gives no clear explanation for how it happened.
07:14They let it go for now.
07:16But the strangely haunting wound on his face and its grim origin will soon demand answers.
07:22Is that the only injury you got is on your leg, though, in the scratch right there?
07:25Right?
07:26There's like...
07:27Huh?
07:28There's something on...
07:30There's something on my...
07:32Your stomach okay?
07:33No, my...
07:34Huh?
07:35What?
07:36Hmm?
07:37I can't talk right.
07:38Okay.
07:39There's something on my leg.
07:41On your leg?
07:42Yes, sir.
07:43Okay.
07:44Is it...
07:45Other than that?
07:46That's it?
07:47Huh?
07:48Other than that?
07:49That's only injuries?
07:50Okay.
07:51We're gonna lift you up and take you off the squat, okay?
07:53Mm-hmm.
07:54Can you worry it?
07:55No.
07:56Okay.
07:57Tell you what, let's just put...
07:58You wanna lift him up or you wanna throw him on this chair and put him out there?
08:00Don't matter to me.
08:02Donovan is carried outside in handcuffs to the waiting paramedics, who strap him to a gurney
08:07and provide first aid to his injured leg.
08:09The medical team noted that Donovan continued to blame the attack on his alternate personality,
08:14Jeff, adding that he doesn't know why Jeff did this.
08:18And more chillingly, he doesn't know why Heidi didn't stay down.
08:22Investigators will soon interrogate Donovan at the hospital, but first, a nurse has questions
08:27of her own.
08:28Um, am I gonna be safe in here in the room with you if I let myself?
08:33Yes.
08:34Are you gonna hurt yourself?
08:36Can you tell me what happened?
08:38Yes.
08:39Do you wanna wait until we're alive or...?
08:44I...
08:45I...
08:46I...
08:47I haven't been died...
08:49I've never been died...
08:51I've never been died...
08:53I've never been died...
08:55It's...
08:57Basically, the easiest way I can say it, is multiple personalities...
09:01But...
09:02I really...
09:04Can't explain it.
09:05Cause like, multiple personalities, like...
09:08I'm usually not aware...
09:10They can just call you.
09:12But...
09:13But I don't know what's called when...
09:16They...
09:17Take control of you.
09:20I...
09:21I have always believed there is a good side in the person...
09:24Her next question is followed by a startling revelation from Donovan, who clarifies that
09:40the victim is his stepmother.
09:54Officers photograph Donovan's wounds in blood-stained clothing before reading his Miranda rights.
10:09Afterward, they begin diving into the harrowing mystery of the day's events
10:13and what may have triggered his sudden, violent outburst.
10:16Anything happen today at school?
10:19No.
10:20Did you have a bad day today or anything?
10:22Or how was school?
10:23No.
10:24School was full of fun.
10:25Investigators would later ask a similar question to his classmate and best friend Tatum, seemingly
10:30in an attempt to uncover any clues or warning signs that may have hinted at what was to
10:35come.
10:36Have you noticed any changes in Donovan's behavior recently?
10:40No.
10:41Actually, if anything, he seemed a little bit happier like at school.
10:45However, while Donovan was in the library the morning of the killing, another student
10:50named Jake approached his table after being aggravated by a fellow classmate.
10:54In his anger, he asked Donovan if he'd ever been so mad at someone he wanted to beat them
10:58up.
10:59Donovan eerily replied, no, but I would stab someone.
11:03The student shrugged it off as a joke, unaware of the brutal acts that would take place later
11:08that evening.
11:09So, other than what you told me about him so far, were there any other emotional problems
11:17that you saw or anything else going on that we need to know about?
11:20Nothing I know of.
11:21Okay.
11:22However, a chilling journal entry begins to hint at a darkness growing within Donovan.
11:27In it, he describes his dream utopia in which all emotions are eradicated.
11:31He makes an exception for love, cryptically stating, some people kill for love.
11:36But what did Donovan kill for?
11:39Shockingly, the journal isn't the only clue that something sinister was brewing.
11:43His English teacher would later discover a letter he wrote to him just before leaving
11:47school the day of Heidi's killing.
11:50However, its discovery would come far too late.
11:53For now, investigators focus on what happened when Donovan returned home.
11:57All right.
11:58So, tell me about coming home from school.
12:01What did you do after you came home from school?
12:03I took a nap.
12:05Hmm?
12:06I...
12:07I...
12:08I took a nap.
12:09You took a nap.
12:10So, you got home at 3, you took a nap.
12:12How long did you sleep?
12:13I didn't say it felt like a nap.
12:15It was...
12:16It was supposed to be for a half hour.
12:18Okay.
12:19So, you took a nap.
12:20What...
12:21Why did you say it was supposed to be for a half hour?
12:23Who told you it was supposed to be a half hour?
12:25My...
12:26My...
12:27My...
12:28My stepmom.
12:29Okay.
12:30First, I...
12:31I...
12:32I...
12:33I asked if it could be a half hour.
12:35She said, yeah.
12:36Black handed over subject.
12:38Then what happened?
12:39After I woke up...
12:40My...
12:41My...
12:42My...
12:43My...
12:44My...
12:45Room.
12:46Another kind of...
12:48Thing.
12:49Jeff wanted to come in.
12:51And then who?
12:52Jeff wanted to...
12:53Yeah.
12:54Did you ever tell...
12:56Dad or stepmom about Jeff?
12:58No.
12:59Why not?
13:00Cause...
13:01Cause I was afraid that he wouldn't believe me.
13:03Okay.
13:04And he'd think I would be doing it for attention.
13:07Absolutely.
13:08Did you tell anybody else about Jeff?
13:10I told the press.
13:11Uh...
13:12I told...
13:13Who's the two people?
13:15After reassurance from the officer that he just wants to ask them questions, he reluctantly
13:19gives him two names.
13:21Her name's Tatum.
13:22And...
13:23And...
13:24And my...
13:25The close version of my program.
13:27Who's that?
13:28Um...
13:29Madison.
13:30Madison?
13:31Yes.
13:32The thing is, she's an indignant student.
13:33She's what?
13:34She...
13:35She's an indignant student.
13:36Okay.
13:37She didn't go to school out there?
13:38Where does she live?
13:39Once possible.
13:40So how did you tell her?
13:41Um...
13:42From...
13:43Yeah.
13:44I...
13:45I...
13:46I have no idea.
13:47How do you know her?
13:48Well...
13:49Kind of embarrassing.
13:50But like...
13:51Via Facebook?
13:52Or...
13:53On my...
13:54Oh, okay.
13:55Tatum would later share with officers her personal thoughts about the mysterious Jeff.
14:10When she's asked what Donovan's behavior is like when the alternate personality takes
14:14over, her reply raises more questions than answers.
14:18I don't know what he does when it happens.
14:20I've never been there when it has.
14:22I've only known...
14:23Like, I've only known him as Donovan.
14:26Do you believe he had a split personality?
14:28Or do you think this was just a fantasy thing for him?
14:31To get attention?
14:32Something like that?
14:33I don't think it was for attention.
14:35Like, I believe that it probably could have happened.
14:38Though she claims to have never witnessed this alternate persona for herself, bone-chilling
14:43evidence would contradict these claims.
14:45In a text exchange later uncovered between Tatum and Donovan, he acts as Jeff, calling
14:51himself the devil's child and anything but holy.
14:54He also makes disturbing requests for the courage to stab someone 67 times and tells Tatum
15:00he's a lot different than Donovan, who would never kill anyone.
15:04For now, Jeff remains an enigma, with investigators unaware of how deeply disturbing the truth of
15:09his identity will reveal itself to be.
15:12Meanwhile, Donovan continues to elaborate on what happened next.
15:16So, you're cleaning your room and you say Jeff wants to come out.
15:21Can you describe Jeff to me?
15:23How does Jeff act?
15:25He's a homicidal.
15:26He's full of fun.
15:27Yeah.
15:28Obviously.
15:29But, like, he laughs about things that he did today.
15:38And he's super fidgety.
15:41He always puts pens or twirls his pencil or something.
15:46So, can you tell me about what happened at home after you cleaned your room?
15:51What did you do then?
15:53He came out.
15:55He was tired of being in me.
15:57And he said, I don't know if I'm not.
15:59And usually, I don't let him.
16:02And I tried to not.
16:05And I tried to stop him.
16:07But I was like, you know what?
16:08No harm is going to do that.
16:10And I was, I was fine.
16:13Donovan then explains that once Jeff emerged, he changed clothes.
16:17Dressed in a plain white t-shirt and black jeans.
16:20Why are those clothes?
16:22Because it, because it's his favorite outfit.
16:25It's a what?
16:26Because it's his favorite outfit.
16:28You're talking about your favorite outfit?
16:30His.
16:31His.
16:32You mean Jeff?
16:33Mm-hmm.
16:34Mine, I decorated white.
16:36White history.
16:38So, change clothes.
16:39And then what happened?
16:40And then what happened?
16:41He grabbed a knife.
16:42And he carried a stupid smile on his face.
16:45That's what my boy thought was.
16:47What it just did.
16:49Donovan indicates that he intentionally grabbed a knife
16:52and then grabbed the lancet to complete the cuts on his mouth.
16:55Both acts demonstrate a level of preparation and forethought.
16:59Donovan's cuts, extending from each side of his mouth toward his ears,
17:03created what officers grimly described as an exaggerated smile.
17:07His chilling explanation for doing this to himself would later leave investigators stunned.
17:12So, we got the knife.
17:14And you're in the kitchen.
17:16And you catch your face.
17:18Did you do that in the kitchen?
17:20I did that in the bathroom so I could see.
17:22So he could see.
17:24So in the mirror?
17:26I used a knife in the lancet.
17:28That's because the knife flows.
17:30You don't want to cut anything.
17:32Disturbingly, Tatum suggests that Donovan may have been sharing these frightening ideas with someone else.
17:39I really don't know of any problems, like, for him at home.
17:43Like, but he didn't have anyone else, like, really to talk to.
17:46There was this girl.
17:48All I know is that her first name was Madison.
17:51And that they used to talk.
17:53And they met over, like, the internet.
17:56Like, they had never met each other in person.
17:58And he used to talk to her.
18:01I feel like they maybe just, like, fed off each other.
18:03Investigators begin attempting to search for Madison.
18:06And quickly locate her Facebook account online.
18:09Though her profile is private, they're able to view photographs attached to the account.
18:14What they see as they navigate her gallery is nothing short of a nightmare.
18:18The disturbing images leaving them questioning the true horrific nature of Jeff.
18:23So, you have the injury to your face that you used the knife and the lancet for.
18:29Then what did you do?
18:31I was waiting for mom to come downstairs.
18:33Now, when we're talking about mom, you keep referring to mom.
18:36We're talking about Heidi.
18:38Yes, okay.
18:39She...
18:41Yeah.
18:42Okay.
18:43So, it's very kind of confusing.
18:48Because, like, when I say me, I could even mean me or Jeff.
18:53But, like...
18:54Like, okay.
18:55Like, at this time period, I mean Jeff.
18:58But I say me because it's my physical being.
19:01Okay.
19:02But it was he who acted.
19:04It was he who controlled.
19:06With that settled, Donovan continues to detail the harrowing account
19:10and the shocking moments that led to the brutal attack.
19:13You're downstairs.
19:14Yeah.
19:15You waited for her to come downstairs.
19:17So, she's upstairs?
19:18Mm-hmm.
19:19She was upstairs.
19:20But she was dating too long.
19:21So, I called her downstairs.
19:23What did you say to call her down?
19:25I said, Mom, can you come down here for a second?
19:28It's gonna happen to her.
19:31So, she came downstairs?
19:34Mm-hmm.
19:35What happened then?
19:36I don't have to explain how it all happened.
19:39Well, it would be helpful.
19:41That way we know what happened to her.
19:43I think you kind of owe your stepmom, you know,
19:47a little bit of telling what happened.
19:50I mean, otherwise nobody's gonna know what happened to her.
19:53You know what I mean?
19:55I think you personally care about your stepmom.
19:58Maybe Jeff doesn't care about your stepmom,
20:00but I think you do.
20:02Jeff doesn't.
20:03Me, I kind of really liked her.
20:05Like, I don't know.
20:07But, yeah, I wouldn't hurt her at all.
20:10So...
20:11Yeah, I...
20:12What happened when she came downstairs?
20:15I hid behind this door.
20:17Mm-hmm.
20:18So, when she would...
20:19When she could walk by, I could just...
20:21Easily...
20:22Mm-hmm.
20:23Yeah.
20:24The door was in the living room.
20:27Um...
20:28It's the right side door that has the glass.
20:32And it was when she came by,
20:34and I kind of had like a...
20:36panic attack, because...
20:38Mm-hmm.
20:39I can't believe...
20:40Jeff was making me do that.
20:42So, what happened after that?
20:44You said she came by.
20:46What happened after she came by?
20:47And I'm glad that...
20:50I'm glad that he did this, but he...
20:53But he...
20:54But he hugged her.
20:55He did.
20:56And then, like, after...
20:58He hugged her.
20:59Mom was like,
21:01Why'd you touch your face?
21:03So, what happened then?
21:05He began...
21:07He began...
21:09He began...
21:10...stuffing.
21:13In later interviews, Heidi's closest friend, Angie,
21:16and her daughter, Ashley, open up about Donovan,
21:19who they've known since he was just two years old.
21:22He's always been different, never really...
21:24Like, I wouldn't categorize him as shy,
21:26but he didn't like people with very few friends.
21:29Like, he had friends.
21:30And it's not that he didn't socialize.
21:32He was an introvert.
21:34He's very quiet.
21:35Yeah, he's very introverted.
21:37What was Donovan's relationship like with Heidi?
21:41Very tense.
21:42Very tense.
21:43Very tense?
21:44Why do you say very tense?
21:45Donovan has always been an issue for Shane and Heidi.
21:49And when I mean issue, I mean he's been...
21:53That's what they argue about.
21:55They always argue about Donovan.
21:57Donovan is their reason why they...
21:58Their main reason why they fight?
22:00Yeah.
22:01They'll soon share more eye-opening details,
22:04explaining what they believe to be the source of the ongoing tension
22:07between Donovan and Heidi.
22:09Meanwhile, Donovan continues to share the horrific details of what happened next,
22:14as he began the savage assault.
22:16She said, no, stop.
22:17Just call 911.
22:18I was like, no.
22:19How many times was she stood?
22:20I don't know.
22:21I was like, no.
22:22I was like, no.
22:23How many times was she stood?
22:24I don't know.
22:25I was trying to push the glass, but I can't see it.
22:28I don't even know.
22:29Then we went upstairs because she was turning back her phone,
22:32and she...
22:33So she'd go...
22:34So she'd go...
22:35So she'd go one lane.
22:36I went upstairs.
22:38Then I remembered that Donovan was upstairs.
22:42So she...
22:43She ran?
22:44She walked upstairs.
22:46I was very exhausted.
22:48She walked back.
22:50Where was she stabbed?
22:52In the front of her, the back of her, or something else?
22:55Everywhere.
22:56Everywhere.
22:57Everywhere.
22:58Then when I went upstairs, I took both of the phones because she had my...
23:07So she went upstairs?
23:10You followed her?
23:11Well, actually, I ran ahead of her.
23:14So she couldn't call anybody before I got there.
23:19According to Donovan, when Heidi finally made it upstairs to the master bedroom,
23:24she laid down on her bed.
23:26What he did next would add a chilling new layer of brutality to the violent altercation.
23:31She was lying...
23:33She...
23:34If she was lying on the bed, I couldn't seek her suffer.
23:37What did you do then?
23:38Me and Jeff couldn't see her suffer.
23:41I thought it would be done upstairs.
23:44I was like, this is the quickest way she will.
23:47So she's laying on the bed.
23:49Mm-hmm.
23:50Did she say anything else to you?
23:52I just called my mother.
23:54And then after, I said no again.
23:57I shot her.
23:59And I hit him.
24:02It had to be an accident.
24:04He would not.
24:06I know they argued a lot.
24:08She was very frustrated.
24:10And you said it had to be an accident?
24:13That's what I believe, yes.
24:15I don't think that either one of them know they get mad at each other.
24:18I don't think that they would ever hurt each other.
24:21Not intentionally.
24:23Kids and parents, they argue.
24:25They fight.
24:27No.
24:28You did the bullet striker?
24:30How far away from her head were you?
24:33But we both wanted her to stop suffering.
24:38He, Jeff, likes to do this, but he doesn't like it.
24:46But he doesn't like to imitate the sufferer.
24:49A coroner's report would confirm the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the head with
25:04more than 60 multiple sharp force injuries to her body.
25:08A tip of the knife blade was also extracted from her skull while the firearm was located
25:13on the bed lying next to her body.
25:15Did you know any history of any anger issues, any mental illness, any, you know, depression,
25:22anxiety?
25:23She wanted to get him, take him to a doctor.
25:26Heidi wanted to take him to a doctor?
25:27And her and Shane had talked about it.
25:29Why did she say that she wanted to?
25:31Was she seeing things?
25:32Because maybe he was going through a depression.
25:35The fact that he was withdrawing, it was like three, three and a half years ago.
25:40He started to withdraw from them.
25:42Back at the hospital, the investigator urges Donovan to continue, and he soon explains
25:47the horrifying cause of the self-inflicted wound to his leg.
25:51So he threw the gun down on the bed beside her, and then you went back downstairs?
25:56What did you do downstairs?
25:59I was, I wasn't going to leave.
26:03Jeff was still taking control.
26:05I noticed my, my legs are hurting real, real bad, and it was a little wet, it's time to
26:12pull it up, and it was a deep gash in the leg.
26:16I freaked out.
26:17How did you get the gash in your leg?
26:19While I was trying to hurt her, she, she, she fought back, and like her legs were tangled,
26:31and, uh, her what?
26:32Uh, uh, legs?
26:33Uh, uh, legs?
26:34Uh, legs?
26:35Yeah.
26:36So you were wrestling with her?
26:37Yeah.
26:38Did you end up on the ground?
26:39Yeah, we both did.
26:41Uh, we wrestled a lot, and then I saw her body, I didn't care where my legs were, I, I,
26:52I, I don't wanna say, I, I, I, I, I, take a breath.
26:57It's okay.
26:57Take a deep breath.
26:59When I tried to hurt her, I hit my leg, I didn't really feel anything, because I was just,
27:08it was a moment.
27:11So you stabbed yourself in the leg accidentally?
27:13as angie and ashley continue to elaborate on heidi and donovan's tense relationship
27:19they delve deeper into what they believe may have been the root cause of their conflict
27:24everybody knows that there has been tension between them and just by tension like you said
27:30earlier you just mean them not necessarily getting along because she wanted to discipline yes and
27:38yes like any 14 year old right you don't want to be disciplined no you know she would take the phone
27:43her dad his dad would give it back to him yeah you know she would take the game system two days later
27:49his dad would give it back to him or you know he would be grounded but his dad would go take him
27:55shopping and spend like four hundred dollars on him it was an issue he can be very manipulative he
28:00tries to get his way by getting up underneath your skin okay and kind of uh forcing you to do what
28:06he wants and a lot of times he would try to do that by using his dad he would never get punished
28:11for anything so she was he never knew a consequence he was more the punishing yes she was now now when
28:17you say punish what what type of punishment do you like taking the game system away or taking his phone
28:25away or making him do a chore you know i mean she never touched him or physically she wouldn't even
28:33spank her children if that's what you mean in an earlier conversation with the hospital nurse
28:38donovan explained what led to his next decision to contact the police and confess to the harrowing
28:44crime after he did it notice the cut he's scared he's mad me because i called the police
28:54and i was scared i was like i just did a really bad thing and i was huge gash in my leg to hang
29:03no way getting myself stitches i was like i need to go to the hospital if i know i'm gonna be like
29:11infected yeah so he's mad at me for coming here because like he thought like just do it
29:22right now i obviously can't run so well it's far enough to clear plan b so he just you know i'm just
29:34lucky if you're the human thing i'm gonna go back inside my head now
29:39well so he's gonna cross all the trouble in your hand yeah that's fair i would never want to hurt
29:48anybody to be on the speed of the only reason why we call 9-1-9 only because it's fine
29:57i wouldn't be here and she would still take it over me and won't let me come out
30:05while investigators have now learned the devastating details of what happened to heidi
30:15they still have little to go on when it comes to establishing a motive
30:19angie and ashley's accounts of their strained relationship don't explain what could have
30:23caused donovan to violently snap according to our analysis team member at ewu while a host
30:29personality can be aware of alternate personalities it's very unlikely for the host personality to be
30:34aware of specific details that occur when an alternate is taking the lead if truly an alternate
30:40personality existed donovan would not know the details and thought process of each step of the
30:46crime so cut to your face what what's the significance of that it's what it was his smile do you watch a lot of
30:57movies what other character has a smile like that um jeff the killer that's where jeff kind of came
31:07from uh but that's just a story it was a movie what's that story i'm not familiar with it it's called jeff
31:16what's it about it's about this kid his name is jeff and he moved into a new house
31:22mm-hmm my name is um long sort of short uh couple things pulling him and then beat him so he
31:32looked the first time he stabbed one um just to get away second time he was also defending himself
31:41um because they came back again and they were trying to kill him then like he told the leader
31:47the second leader and then uh the second leader well the second person i threw the second person named
31:53keith he set him on fire that's why his skin's all white and his hair's black and then after he killed
32:03uh randy he snapped and um when he came back from the hospital he was pure white he had a white shirt
32:12uh 8.3 black pants i came home and put a smile on his face creepypasta is both a website and a term
32:24for horror related stories and images that are shared online donovan earlier explained his fascination
32:29with the website to the nurse mentioning names that may be hauntingly familiar creepypasta right yeah
32:36what kind of what kind of i mean besides this jeff on there what else is on town jennifer from sun
32:46amendment and um uh slender man so my dog i was trapped then drowned the rage thank you very
32:58well it's really good it's really cool jeff the killer one infamous character first began circulating as
33:05an image in 2008 its disturbing origins widely disputed in online forums the image has inspired
33:12many artists and even fan films another friend of donovan's named skyler sheds more light on donovan's
33:18chilling fascination he was kind of one of those people who um like obsessed with scary stories at
33:25least that's how i saw it he had a um picture on his phone that was jeff the killer which is what he
33:32mentioned so that kind of like i never heard about it until i met him and i was like that's a pretty
33:41weird story though depictions of jeff the killer vary several haunting details remain eerily consistent
33:48he's always seen depicted with a wide sinister grin wearing a white t-shirt or hoodie and black jeans
33:55the same clothing donovan put on as he claims jeff took over when's the first time he ever brought up
34:01this jeff the killer he actually never brought it up to me i saw it on his phone oh you saw it on his
34:06phone did you ask him like hey man what is that yeah and then um he told me that it was a creepy
34:12pasta story called jeff the killer so i looked it up and i thought it was one of the creepiest stories
34:17ever however it was madison's facebook page that truly left investigators stunned as multiple drawings
34:23of jeff the killer filled the photo gallery determined to uncover the truth investigators continue
34:29speaking with angie who claimed she left the house just before the brutal attack he was taking laundry
34:36down and then he was standing in his room as she's telling me how she caught him because when i came
34:43upstairs she said don't even ask me for your damn phone because you're not getting it so he was standing
34:49in the room and she said don't even ask me for your damn phone because you're not getting it yeah something
34:53like that and then she turns to me and she says i caught him sexting today and i said what i said
35:00donovan and she said i'm tired of this heidi confiscating his phone preventing him from contacting
35:07his girlfriend madison may have been the final act that pushed donovan over the edge however his earlier
35:13confession to the hospital nurse suggests it wasn't one specific action that set him off but a combination of
35:19factors was there something that set jeff off today no it wasn't it today i mean what what seemed to
35:28bring on the attack she always told me stupid stuff like i don't know like not like doing this is wrong or
35:39or or like not sleeping in the right spot like like normal normal normal parents you know but
35:49you know i could absolutely talk in the lungs for not doing tissue straight and once i said down my niece
35:57if she was crying and when it stopped started setting down i'm not hitting it sometimes she would be
36:05mean with the things that she said and as a mother i've done the same thing i i'm not perfect but i
36:11know you know she would say and that's the only thing that i can think of that as a kid you know you
36:19don't want to hear your parents say crap things well but all she would say was like you know i can't wait
36:25till he's 18 and but i mean she'd never i mean would she you know look at him and you know dumb ass or
36:34stupid or you know nothing like that no i mean she would say pain in my ass yeah well i can't tell you
36:41how many times i've been pain in my ass i can't tell you how many times i've been called that and he
36:47would just sit there you know if other people are around however as angie left the home heidi and
36:53donovan were alone when donovan viciously ended her life later donovan's teacher contacted detectives
37:00about a letter donovan left for him before leaving school the day of the killing in the letter he
37:05describes reading a book about a serial killer his haunting words leaving sinister clues about his
37:11intentions he claims killings are a part of human nature and can't be stopped the letter and the
37:18glaring warning signs would be discovered far too late following his treatment at the hospital 14
37:25year old donovan asher nicholas was arrested and charged with both murder and aggravated murder
37:30with mandatory prison time for a year each for having a firearm under his control while committing
37:35the crime and for using the firearm during the crime he was transported to the central ohio youth
37:41center on july 2018 donovan was found guilty of all charges and sentenced to life in prison with the
37:48possibility of parole after 25 years however five years later on june 15 2023 the ohio supreme court
37:57overturned the sentencing stating that donovan a juvenile at the time of the crime had his due
38:02process rights violated when the court used its discretion to certify him as an adult these records
38:08are confidential while we haven't been able to verify these details according to news reports donovan has
38:14been released from jail ewu reached out to donovan's family to determine his whereabouts and didn't get any
38:21response
