00:00I'm Ant Anstead. I've been fixing cars since I was a teenager and I've set
00:11myself the task of restoring and selling eight crumbling old cars for
00:22profit it's the ultimate road cruiser and the stakes are high because it's
00:30personal the cow room is now the bathroom okay everything I make is going
00:36towards this 500 year old farmhouse she goes today which means big hammer that
00:42I bought for my mum and dad to retire in so what's going on there lodged but it's
00:47a total wreck how far away from collapse is this a really good storm could
00:52cause a problem let's do it with my family by my side
00:57feels like a proper brake pedal now and some help from my engineer mate Darren
01:02oh you joining me to the right yeah why not I've got the best team around me as I
01:10take on eight wrecks on wheels perfect and a house that's falling apart what the
01:17whole thing is being kept up by chicken wire pretty much it's a massive gamble
01:21oh come on breathe I am losing sleep over this I'll be honest I have no idea what's going on
01:34it's full steam ahead with work on the farmhouse we're gonna get these tiles off now
01:39are we slowly don't break them no planning approval has come through to remove the ugly 1950s porch I'm gonna swap it out for a period style open porch to be more in keeping with the village but there is one aspect that I'd love to keep
01:55morning chaps morning all right check it out the council are really really keen that this front door be salvaged so if you can save the frame save the door yeah okay we can salvage that good door that yeah yeah yeah door and frames lovely and I love the patina the way it's aged particularly darker at the bottom when it sets in here it's gonna look great it's gonna look really yeah it will do
02:13it's gonna cost me seven grand in total to completely redo the porch so I need to get back to flipping cars to earn some cash
02:31ideally I'd be going for a big margin car but my best mate and automotive expert Darren is sadly on another job but before he heads off I've asked him to look for a model I know inside out the first car I ever restored when I was a teenager an MG midget I call Bridget
02:52so there's quite a lot of midgets available and the prices do range from a few hundred pounds to quite a few thousand pounds they are a real entry-level classic but we've got to choose wisely midgets don't generally sell for much rust is a big issue in a midget so we need to make sure that that is relatively solid
03:19the difficulty is I'm not going to be around much for this one
03:22the difficulty is I'm not going to be around much for this one ah this might be our car
03:27and
03:28and
03:29and
03:30yeah yeah yeah yeah what you got
03:31I found a midget have a look at this
03:33it's a 1977 MG midget 1500
03:37perfect it's just like Bridget the midget
03:39I really had to scrimp and save to buy that midget I was doing jobs in restaurants jobs in pubs and I blew it all on this midget
03:47I was just 17 years old when I bought Bridget off a driveway in South London for a couple of grand
03:53I knew nothing about mechanics but she kicked off my whole car career
03:58check out these pictures
03:59looks straight
04:00audio work doesn't look too bad
04:02the engine bay looks really clean
04:03what's the history?
04:04one family owned
04:06that car's owned for three decos by one family?
04:09yeah I believe so
04:10and it's a rubber bumper just like Bridget
04:12how much is it?
04:13how much is it?
04:14this bit you're gonna like
04:16thousand pounds
04:17that car's a grand?
04:18thousand pounds
04:19text me the details
04:20I'm going
04:21you don't want to know any more?
04:36now in simple terms there's two echelons of MG
04:40chrome bumper
04:41rubber bumper
04:42and in the world the chrome bumpers are probably more desirable
04:45because they're slightly better looking
04:47but for me because my first car was the less desirable rubber bumper
04:51because that's all I could afford as a 17 year old
04:54actually it goes the other way
04:56I'd rather have a rubber bumper car
04:58they're a bit more powerful
04:59and I kind of like the big bulky bumpers on it
05:02it makes it feel a bit more robust
05:06there was nothing cooler than those years driving that MG as a teenager
05:10Jerry
05:19Ant
05:21good to meet you
05:22I've caught you mid grafting I see
05:24this last minute pre-sale polishing
05:26absolutely
05:27what do you think?
05:28wow this really takes me back
05:31give me the history before I dive in
05:33I've had the car for 21 years
05:37can't believe it
05:38and then before that
05:40it belonged to my brother
05:41ok
05:42and he had it for 15 years
05:44and what sort of usage have you had with the car?
05:47well I guess it's probably been in the garage more than it's been on the road
05:52we had a few mechanical problems with it
05:55the latest one was the fuel pipes
05:58so how long ago did she last move?
06:01certainly over three years ago
06:02because it's such a beautiful day
06:04I'd love to look at it under the sunlight
06:05absolutely yeah
06:07let's wind it
06:08let's do it
06:09the first MG midget was the 1929 M-Type
06:13and the concept was continually developed until the TF midget finished production in 1955
06:19but six years later the midget made a comeback
06:22this swinging 60s model was a restyled version of the 1958 Frogeye Austin Healey Sprite
06:29with both cars using the same engine, structure and suspension
06:33the final version of the midget and the car I restored as a teenager was the midget 1500
06:39it was launched in 1974 clocking speeds of 100 miles an hour
06:43the infamous rubber bumpers were added to meet US safety regulations
06:48and for me this version holds a special place in my heart
06:52yeah!
06:53see this is what this car's designed for
06:55absolutely
06:56yeah
06:57the three minutes of English summer we get each year
06:59wow
07:00so if it's okay with you
07:01do you mind if I have a little look around on my own?
07:02help yourself
07:03man I learned so much on Bridget the Midget
07:08I changed the diff, changed the wishbones, changed the suspension
07:13I'd love to get my hands on another midget
07:16right, I'm here to do a job
07:22now put myself back in the professional hat for a second
07:25these cars have loads of concerns
07:27the shiny sills worry me
07:31people put those shiny plates on the side to hide something
07:34the midget's design makes it particularly prone to rust
07:38the hoods are rarely watertight leading to sodden carpets
07:41and the sills are also known to trap moisture
07:45bit of rust on the door here
07:48but that's only surface rust
07:52now this bit here
07:55this is probably the biggest concern on the car
07:57this is a notorious area where MG Midgets gather rust
08:00around here
08:01but as well as potential rust issues
08:04this car has been stood still in Gerry's garage for the past three years
08:08I said it didn't run
08:16no that doesn't bother me
08:18yeah that's a pretty solid engine bay
08:21if the only problem with the engine is the fuel line
08:24I could be quids in
08:25the interior needs a spruce up
08:27but that won't bust the bank either
08:29but if the sills are hiding any skeletons
08:32that could mean some serious welding
08:34the fixes on this car need to be cheap
08:37as midgets only sell for a few grand
08:39so with tight margins
08:41it's all about the price
08:45it's up to you a bit quick
08:47I really like her
08:48she's a real honest and honourable MG Midget
08:51that's good
08:52so how much do you want for the MG?
08:54the car's been in the family for 35 years
08:57but I think you know £1,000 is a fair price
09:03alright well I'm not going to haggle at all
09:05I'm not
09:06it's a fair price for a really fair MG
09:08so I'm going to shake your hand
09:10at £1,000
09:11excellent
09:16and it's as simple as that
09:17I am now the proud owner
09:19of a rubber bumper
09:211500 MG Midget
09:23just like Bridget
09:26£1,000 is a really solid buy
09:28and it does leave a little bit of wiggle room for profit
09:32I think the key is to not overspend
09:34because I'm so attached to this car
09:37there is a
09:39there is a tendency that I may overspend
09:43back at the farmhouse
09:53rebuilding the porch is going to set me back £7,000
09:56so I can't let teenage nostalgia cloud my business brain
10:01but there is one person
10:03I do want to share this little trip down memory lane with
10:07oh what?
10:10it's like Bridget
10:11it's blue Bridget
10:13wow
10:14I'll check this out
10:15that's amazing
10:17it looks in good order
10:19yeah we have to look a little bit closer
10:22we're getting it
10:27I haven't driven it
10:28does it drive?
10:29so at the moment
10:31this car has not turned a wheel in probably three or four years
10:34she says it's only a fuel issue
10:36so if you want to help
10:37I think we go straight to the fuel line
10:39okay
10:41there you go
10:42right
10:43you're off
10:44now my dad is no mechanical expert
10:47but with no Darren to help
10:48it's useful to have some free labour
10:50this car is so light
10:51we could probably just pick it up
10:52I'm not that strong anymore
10:54I'm really hoping the reason this car hasn't run for three years
10:58is it's simply a fuel line problem
11:00because if it's an engine issue
11:02well my bargain midget
11:03might not be quite the bargain
11:04there's a pipe coming into it from the carbs
11:07and a pipe coming out of it which goes under the car
11:10can you wobble the one coming out?
11:12yeah
11:13is that the one?
11:14oh it's not connected
11:16yeah no wonder it wasn't fuelling
11:19like this is the rubber
11:22look how fragile that is
11:23feel that
11:24I mean look it feels like
11:25brittle
11:26oh no look it just snapped
11:27but for now we can cheat and fill these bowls with fuel
11:34to make sure the issue is a perished fuel line and not something deep in the midgets engine
11:38I need to borrow some petrol from dad's lawnmower
11:41that's lovely
11:42enough?
11:43yeah
11:44pouring it directly into the carbs float chambers will give it enough fuel to fire up for a few seconds
11:51battery in and fingers crossed
11:55right this is the moment of truth
11:57you ready?
11:58yeah
12:03oh wow
12:05that sounds fantastic
12:07oh my god
12:09do you want to hear it again?
12:10go on then
12:21I'm not an expert but that sounds really good
12:24that is what we call on the button
12:26what does that mean?
12:27it means we bought a car for a thousand pounds that's probably worth two
12:30brilliant
12:31yes
12:37thank you darling
12:38I've got dad roped in as an apprentice
12:52have you?
12:53I'm now cheap labour
12:54cheap labour?
12:55he's free labour
12:56and mum you can get involved as well
12:57the interior needs a clean up, the body work needs a bath, I could really do with a new clutch
13:12no chance, I'm quite happy just cleaning inside the house
13:15yeah but you can clean inside the car
13:17yeah but you can clean inside the car
13:18when we clean these seats, and I say we I mean you
13:21when you clean these seats you'll see they'll come up really nicely, they'll lighten up
13:24keep trying
13:25well no then we would have all contributed to Bridget too
13:28I'll think about it
13:30hmm
13:31seems that mum's going to take a bit of extra persuasion
13:34well at least the carpenters are hard at work
13:36they're moving the front door from the soon to be demolished port directly into the house
13:41but they've hit a snag
13:43the house doorway is wider than the old door
13:46we've got to basically bulk the inside of that hole out
13:52so that this fits in
13:54otherwise we've got a gap like that
13:57okay Dan
14:02yeah bring it in mate
14:04let's offer it up and see what it looks like
14:06and now what we've got to do
14:09to get it to fit
14:11so
14:12yeah if we keep it like that
14:14that's too big a step
14:16bring it bring it all the way back
14:17bring it all the way back
14:18let's see whether it will go in
14:20which I think
14:23it will
14:25on there
14:26although it's a bit of a faff
14:28relocating the door
14:29it retains the house's original look
14:32which I love
14:34it also means I'm not splashing any cash on a new door
14:38that's good isn't it
14:40for a first fit it's good
14:42are you all done
14:45yeah just about there
14:46and yeah
14:47that looks amazing
14:48looks all right doesn't it
14:49the heritage people are going to be so happy we saved the original door
14:52yeah
14:53and that's what it was all about
14:54yeah
14:55and now I can demo the porch
14:56yeah
14:57it's ready to rock and roll
14:59do you fellas fancy coming tomorrow with some big hammers
15:02that's a no
15:03who have you got doing
15:04knocking it then
15:05you're looking at him
15:06are you doing it
15:07I'm going to hit it with a big hammer
15:08so in my head
15:11I haven't designed
15:13there is no strategy to this house
15:15but I look at it
15:16and in my mind I know what it's going to look like when it's finished
15:19demo this porch
15:21get this out of the way
15:22it is going to transform the house
15:29the whole reason I've taken on this project is to create a home for my mum and dad
15:35retired life is not quiet
15:39you wouldn't like it any other way though
15:44I sometimes think I do more cleaning here than I do at home
15:47throughout my childhood my parents never owned their own home
15:51so this place will be the start of a new chapter
15:54we live in a two bedroom bungalow
15:55we don't have an awful lot of space
15:58I think we both appreciate what Dan's trying to do
16:01but I don't think any of us realised how big a job it was going to be
16:08I wish everybody would stop making dust
16:16with the house keeping me so busy
16:18I'm hoping this MG restoration will be straightforward
16:21if I can get the fuel system working
16:25then I should be on track
16:27that is the offending fuel line
16:30and that's pretty rusty
16:32let's get a nice new copper fuel line in
16:35the great thing about MG's is the parts are usually easy to source
16:39I've got these parts from a local motor factors for less than 60 quid
16:43the fuel line for our MG is really basic
16:48it's made up of a fixed pipe
16:50flexible hose and held together by jubilee clips
16:53what I want to do is starting at the front of the car
16:58is first attached to the fuel pump that's on the side of the engine
17:01the mechanics are simple on midgets which makes them a great car to learn on
17:12as I found out when I was 17
17:14but no two restorations are ever the same
17:17on Bridget I never did the fuel line
17:20I had to rebuild the carburetors put new air boxes on
17:23and replace the fuel pump
17:24but other than that the line stayed in the car
17:26so it's kind of funny it's the opposite on this car
17:30pump's good, filters are good
17:33I'm doing a fuel line
17:39so what I want to do is shape it so it follows the contour of the car
17:42which means it has to hug the floor, go over the axle
17:45down the floor of the car
17:48so I can make it fit bespoke
17:57tricky is to bend this pipe without creasing it
18:01you can bend it too far, a little too sharp a bend
18:04it puts a kink in it and it ruins the pipe
18:08yeah that is nice
18:15once the pipe is attached to the fuel pump at the front
18:18it needs connecting to the fuel tank at the rear
18:21the fixed pipe is in
18:22and now I'm just joining the fixed pipe to the flexible pipe
18:36yeah that's the fuel system complete
18:41and I suppose you got any black paint have you?
18:45yeah paint I have got
18:49thanks
18:53my Aunty Maria is a gardener by trade
18:56and she's been helping out at the farmhouse
18:58but luckily for me she's also an artist
19:01so I'm putting her to work on the midget
19:03a new badge would cost 25 quid
19:06but every penny counts on this restoration
19:08Aunt said that there's actually not a lot of budget for this project
19:12so I'm perfectly happy to give him my skills
19:16he's utilised my artistic skills several times in the past
19:20although there are times occasionally that he does stop me halfway through one project
19:27and then I have to go and immediately start another project
19:30but we get there in the end
19:33if it adds to the value by doing all these extra little finishes
19:39to make the car really special and that's what's most important
19:43with the porch door relocated it's time to do something I've been desperate to do since I got the keys to this place
19:57and my little bro Michael is joining me for the fun
19:59today is the day we finally get to demolish the porch
20:03she goes today
20:05which means big hammer
20:12yeah this is tied in
20:14the end
20:16thanks for the warning man
20:17that's the roof off and we need to clear a path before phase 2, the walls
20:31let's get the wood on the pile
20:33and the concrete on the rubble
20:35now that Anthony's done the fun part
20:37now it's the non-glamorous tidy up
20:38but it's important to stay on top of it
20:48I don't know when the last time Anthony tidied anything up was
20:59the thing is I really need to turn my attention to the workshop
21:03the margins are super tight on these entry-level cars so any profit will be down to free labour and low expenditure
21:11and we're not quite out of the woods on this one yet
21:14now this shiny panel really worries me
21:17one area that MG midgets are prone to rusting is in the sill here water builds up in the wheel arches
21:24runs inside the sill and rots out particularly here in the jacking points
21:28and what people do is they get these nice shiny panels and just slap it on over the top so they conceal the rust
21:35so my biggest fear is this shiny bit of mirror sill
21:40this has some secrets underneath
21:42yep
21:56Yep, this is worst-case scenario.
22:14I mean, this back portion here is actually okay.
22:29Starts to get a hole around the middle jacking point, but from here forward, this is toast.
22:36This car cannot go on the road safely if it's left like that.
22:40You know, I've been doing this long enough to know that when you restore classic cars,
22:43you're ultimately prepared to expect problems.
22:46There's such fine margins in this car, the profit is shrinking quickly.
22:56Hello?
22:57Yo, how are you getting on?
22:59Yeah, good, good. You?
23:01Less good, in fairness.
23:03I pulled those shiny sill panels off the MG, and guess what?
23:07There was no shiny metal behind them.
23:11I'm not only going to need an outer sill panel, I'm going to need an inner sill panel.
23:17It's that bad?
23:18Yeah, it's that bad.
23:19I've got an idea where I can get those from.
23:23I'll see if I can get them delivered directly to you.
23:26Do you know what?
23:27If you could just make the call, get a sill outer sill in there and a little bit of loose steel.
23:31Okay.
23:32I'll make a call.
23:33Thanks, dude.
23:34Bye.
23:35The rust issue on the midget is a major setback, but at least the driver's side sill is okay.
23:53While I wait for the parts I need, I've uncovered another problem to tackle.
23:57The next big job on this car is the brakes, and the pedal is pretty solid.
24:03There's about half an inch of movement in it.
24:05Unfortunately, for me to get on with fixing the brakes, it is a two-person job.
24:09So, with no Darren to help me, I've pulled in my son Archie to lend a hand.
24:14Unfortunately, he's not quite so mad about cars as I was at his age.
24:19How you doing, mate?
24:22Oh, my God, I can't believe you were in a white T-shirt.
24:24Yes, I know.
24:25I know.
24:26I thought we'd be working on the house.
24:27No, no, we're not working on the house.
24:28We're working on this.
24:29What do you think?
24:30It's all right.
24:32What do you mean it's all right?
24:34That's a British classic.
24:35I don't really like the blue.
24:36You know that this was my first car?
24:38I knew you had this as your first car, but I don't really like it.
24:41It's a bit small.
24:43Dude, that cuts deep.
24:45Oh, my gosh.
24:47My pride is not the only thing that's damaged in this workshop.
24:51The brake pedal is locked solid, but I'm sure I've got a fix.
24:55I've got a new master cylinder because that's what I think it is.
25:02This thing here sits this way.
25:05The pedal is here with a pivot point.
25:06So, as your foot hits here, it goes pushing in this plunger
25:11and it pushes fluid out of this to the four corners
25:14and grips the caliper on the front and pushes out the drums on the rear.
25:18But before we take this old one out, we need to drain the system.
25:21So, if you jump in there and get comfortable.
25:28Dude, it suits you.
25:30It's all right.
25:31It's not very comfortable either.
25:33This is what a cool car looks like.
25:35My dad loves it, but I just don't see the love for it.
25:39I think it's an all right car.
25:41Right, Archer, just try and give that a little pump.
25:45Yeah, the fluid's coming through.
25:47The pedal's stuck on the bottom.
25:49Oh, well, that tells me it's the master cylinder.
25:51Why?
25:52Well, if you think about it, the hydraulic system's under a constant state of pressure.
25:56So, when you press the pedal, it always wants to bounce back.
25:59So, if it stays down, the master cylinder's not doing its job.
26:02So, can you lift up with your foot?
26:04There we go. Let's back up.
26:05Yeah, pump it.
26:06You know what? It might be quicker if you jump out and just do it by hand.
26:15Perfect. That's it.
26:17The pedal box that contains the master cylinder and the brake and clutch pedals is rusty.
26:21So, it needs cleaning up before we can fit a new brake master cylinder.
26:25It'll take a minute.
26:27I need a permanent apprentice in the workshop.
26:30Who would I rather work with? Darren, who's more efficient, has decades of experience.
26:35Or my son.
26:37I'd much rather work with you.
26:39Are you kidding me? Don't tell Darren, though. He'll get really upset.
26:42That's it.
26:44No.
26:47Oh, you're doing a great job, buddy.
26:52Once the rust is scrubbed off the pedal box, it will need a layer of heat-resistant paint.
27:01That looks great.
27:03Right, shake that.
27:05Loads until that ball stops rattling.
27:09Yes.
27:15How long do I do this? Is this like...
27:18Isn't the ball supposed to rattle?
27:20Ah.
27:21Hey, look. We've got to do some workshop pranks.
27:35Now for the new brake master cylinder, which has sent me back 94 quid.
27:39Nice.
27:44Oh yeah, check this out. Look down the top of the pedal box.
27:47So if I hit the pedal...
27:48It's moving.
27:49See?
27:50Does it still get stuck?
27:51Nope. Returns.
27:54It's pretty simple, isn't it?
27:57Right. What's next?
27:59All that's left to do is to get new brake fluid into the system.
28:02Slow, consistent pumps.
28:04By depressing the brake pedal repeatedly, any air in the system is being pushed out.
28:09Do two really good pumps.
28:12One, two.
28:15Right, keep it held down.
28:17Okay, let go.
28:20Feels like a proper brake pedal now.
28:22I know, right?
28:23Firm.
28:24Then come straight back.
28:27Topped up the reservoir, and that is...
28:29The brake's done.
28:31Job done.
28:39There we go.
28:40The porch is part way demolished, but there's a snag.
28:44Whoever built the porch did a really solid job.
28:47Michael and builder Ollie need to figure out how to pull it down without damaging the original oak frame of the house.
28:53We're worried about the bond to the house, and it might rip off a section of the house.
28:57We've got another concrete lintel in there, which is bonding it to that.
29:01Yeah, so I think the best way is to knock the top courses of bricks off until you come down to the top of the lintel.
29:07Yeah.
29:08And then you'll be able to easily remove the lintel, and this becomes free standing, and that will just push it down.
29:13Easily, right?
29:14Easily, yeah.
29:15Easily, yeah.
29:16Okay.
29:17Let gravity do its thing.
29:18Okay.
29:19There's no way I'm missing out on a bit more demo.
29:24Yeah, it just needs a bit of brute force.
29:30There's a hole in the grass.
29:36When big bits fall off.
29:40Feels good.
29:41It's fun.
29:42The porch coming down is a massive step for the house, but I do need to push on with the MG Restoration too.
29:59The next task is a two-person job, and with Darren away, I've asked my daughter, Amelie, to help out.
30:05Got a delivery?
30:06Oh, yeah.
30:07That is my new sill panel.
30:10What does that do?
30:11This goes in place of that rusty piece right there.
30:15I think it needs changing.
30:16Yeah, it's pretty bad.
30:17Hey.
30:18How are you doing?
30:19Good, how are you?
30:20Good.
30:21Do you want to get your hands dirty?
30:22Yeah.
30:23I actually need a hand getting this door off.
30:24Oh, God.
30:25Yeah, let's do it.
30:26This is obviously the rusty inner sill, and the problem is if you cut this out, the car will break its back and fall in.
30:34The strength is in this panel.
30:36So, I want to remove the door, weld a brace bar across here, and that's going to hold all the structure in place.
30:43Take the weight of the door.
30:45You got it?
30:46Yeah.
30:47Who needs the gym?
30:48Exactly, right?
30:49Okay, this should come off quite quickly.
30:52Oh, got it.
30:57Don't want to break it.
30:59Yeah, you're going to need some longer sleeves because we're going to be doing some cutting and welding today.
31:04Why?
31:05Bring it on.
31:06Midgets are great cars for any first-time enthusiast to learn on.
31:11Now, you can see if we weld that in place there, that's going to create a whole load of strength.
31:15Are you sure you trust me?
31:16Yeah, you're going to be fine.
31:18Now, you're going to weld the bar to the plate.
31:24So, just do little left and rights down that valley.
31:27Let's do it.
31:28The midget 1500's got a monocoque body, which means the whole car's strength comes from the body shell.
31:41These temporary bars will stop it from folding in on itself.
31:49Now, it's stabilised.
31:51It's now safe to cut out that rusty sill.
31:54Yeah, let's get rid of that.
31:56Yeah, it's got to go.
31:57Right, this is the new inner sill.
32:01This goes up in there.
32:05We're going to have to cut this old one out before we weld this new one in.
32:10So, glasses and angle grinder.
32:17When our midget was built, manufacturers didn't build cars expecting them to last 50 years.
32:22So, they didn't protect the inside of the body shell from corrosion like they do nowadays.
32:32Yeah, that's pretty good.
32:34Love it. Great work today.
32:35Great work today.
32:36Right, I'll see you soon.
32:37Bye, love you.
32:38Love you.
32:41Rust gone, it's time for the new sill.
32:44While I get on with the welding, my mum's decided she's happy to help with the seats.
32:56It's very difficult to say no to Anthony.
33:00Very difficult to say no.
33:02It's coming up really well, but it's quite difficult to make sure you have got between the lines of the stitching.
33:12And my auntie Maria has taken on another job.
33:22The MG's Rostar Wills have been sandblasted back to bare metal and they're ready for painting.
33:28You have to do, like, little strokes.
33:33You can't just put the button down and just spray it because it will run.
33:42After the base coat has dried, my auntie Maria can flex her artistic skills once more.
33:55There we go.
33:58First coat.
33:59That's looking really good.
34:02This restoration is all about free labour, low expenditure and fast turnaround.
34:09With sale day fast approaching, it's time for one final push.
34:13It's the final day the MG will be in the barn.
34:29There's a lot to do, but we're on the home stretch.
34:33At least I think we are.
34:34See, today's about presentation. It's about getting the car ready for sale.
34:38And although it's never going to be an expensive car, there's loads of things that we can do to make it present really well.
34:43Nytle, you notice he gets us for cleaning jobs?
34:58Yeah. What's he got you doing?
35:01Cleaning the boot out.
35:02Oh, right. Look out, here he comes.
35:06Guys, we don't have time to talk.
35:08We're talking while we're working.
35:10Go back to work!
35:12We can multitask.
35:15I cannot do that.
35:17Right, and I think I'm done.
35:19What a difference.
35:21Yes, perfect.
35:22I bought some new carpets for 208 quid.
35:26A small dent in the budget, but they really lift the interior.
35:30It's amazing.
35:32What a bit of carpet can do.
35:39Ant, have a delivery.
35:41Wheels!
35:42Yes!
35:43Oh my God, they're sensational.
35:45They're going to look great on the car.
35:46What a difference in what a set of wheels make.
35:53Oh no, it's amazing, isn't it?
35:55I've replaced that rusty sill, so now the door can go back on.
36:02Next.
36:04Next!
36:06Beautiful!
36:07It looks so much better.
36:19The interior's finished.
36:22Wheels look great.
36:24Brakes are awesome.
36:27The sill is now structurally sound, which leaves just the body work to do.
36:33And I'm going to make a shiny.
36:38Yeah, I feel tired.
36:39I feel really good.
36:41Everyone has got stuck in.
36:43And on the practical side, that's saved a ton of cash.
36:47Many hands make light work.
36:50And I'm really excited to see who the new owner of the MG is going to be.
36:55It's not just the car that's bringing us together as a family.
36:58This project's the most time I've ever spent with Michael.
37:09Ever.
37:11And it's been really lovely.
37:13The age difference was quite big when you were a kid.
37:16And, you know, as we got older, we never really spent a lot of time together.
37:20Now what this farmhouse has done is it's really reconnected us.
37:23It's so great to sort of work shoulder to shoulder with your brother in a project that you both really care about.
37:38Dude, it's epic.
37:42Yes.
37:43It's like all of a sudden the house can breathe.
37:46It's saying thank you.
37:48For the house renovation to be a success, I need the MG to sell for as much as possible.
37:55Yo.
37:56Hiya.
37:58I just thought I'd pop by and see if you needed a hand.
38:01Oh, well, you're a little bit late, actually.
38:02The midget is done.
38:04It looks absolutely amazing.
38:07Do you know what? This has been such a privileged restoration.
38:09I've enjoyed every minute of it.
38:10I have the figures.
38:11Yeah.
38:13A thousand pound purchase.
38:15Well done.
38:17I'm finding her.
38:18All the mechanical parts, 576 quid.
38:22The panel parts were only 140 quid.
38:25Carpets were 208.
38:27Oh, you put new carpets in as well.
38:28And I'm allowed a couple of hundred quid for miscellaneous.
38:31So all in, 1,285.
38:341,285?
38:35Bear in mind, this was a thousand pound car.
38:38This owes us.
38:39Wow.
38:402,285 quid.
38:41So yeah, I'm thinking this weekend happens to be a car show at...
38:48Silverstone, yeah.
38:49Gives me an extra day.
38:51Because you know I want to take her out.
38:53And I don't want to take her out on my own.
38:55And I don't want to take her out on my own.
39:09Whoa, there we go.
39:11It is a cool car.
39:12It's a cool car, right?
39:13Yeah, I have to admit, it's cool.
39:19Do you know what?
39:20It feels really, really fitting to end this restoration in a drive with you.
39:27It takes me back.
39:29So come on, first impressions.
39:32It's growing on me.
39:33I mean, I do like the convertible.
39:36And it pulls really nicely.
39:38Drop a gear.
39:41What do you think of the power?
39:42It feels so quick.
39:44We're doing 55 miles an hour.
39:46It feels like 165 miles an hour.
39:48It feels a lot faster than that.
39:53The brakes worked.
39:54Yeah, the brakes, you said that with an element of surprise.
39:57Yeah.
39:58Of course the brakes work.
40:02Sounds amazing.
40:04Oh my gosh.
40:05This is it.
40:06You're now an MG midget lover.
40:13Boom.
40:15That was cool.
40:19My gosh, I loved every minute of that.
40:20It was really special.
40:21There's something really quintessentially British about taking a two-seat sports car on a summer's day like this and driving it around country lanes.
40:31You know, this has been one of those restorations, which is relatively low costs.
40:36And pulling everybody in to help meant that we got so much more done without having a financial impact.
40:42Putting in new fuel line, overhauling the brake system.
40:44The welding was the big job on the car.
40:46And by the time the body was all polished and the wheels were on it, when you stand back, it's actually a really attractive little MG midget.
40:55It's perfect.
40:58She's a dream to drive and she's now ready to sell.
41:01And where better than at the Silverstone Festival.
41:20All I've done is I've parked our little MG in a sea of all other MGs.
41:25This is an old fashioned way to get a car sold.
41:31Really simple.
41:33Make a sign, put it in the window.
41:35See who bites.
41:36And it's not long before Bridget 2 attracts some serious interest.
41:52Guys, how are you doing?
41:54Hey, I'm Ant.
41:55Hi, I'm Kieran.
41:56Kieran, pleasure to meet you.
41:57I'm Jensen.
41:58Jensen.
41:59Oh, nice to meet you.
42:00Good solid racing name.
42:01Racing name, indeed.
42:02So, you obviously have been attracted to our humble MG midget.
42:06It presents quite nicely, doesn't it?
42:08Is it for yourself or...?
42:10My first car.
42:11This will be your first car?
42:12Yeah.
42:13How old are you?
42:14Turn in 17 very soon.
42:15Oh, sir, come with me.
42:17Just get in there.
42:22Swing your legs in, get comfortable.
42:26I mean, it's just so comfortable.
42:28Are you comfortable?
42:29Yeah.
42:30Do you know what?
42:31Can I tell you a little story?
42:32What?
42:33My first ever car was a rubber bumper MG Midget.
42:36Oh.
42:37In vermilion orange.
42:38Oh, wow.
42:39That's a colour.
42:40Yeah.
42:41Are you into cars?
42:42Oh, yeah.
42:43Do you like working on cars?
42:44Mm.
42:45Right, let's get out.
42:46Let's have a little negotiation.
42:47So, this is the...
42:48Is it a Triumph Spitfire engine and gearbox?
42:51It's the 1500, yes.
42:52Yeah, okay.
42:53What are we talking about price-wise?
42:54Four grand buys the car.
42:56I might want to put a cheeky offer in about 33.
42:59Yeah, I will come down a bit, but not that low.
43:02Okay.
43:0338.
43:0436.
43:07And it's his car.
43:08It's his car, his name in the logbook.
43:11Well, I'm going to shake your hand.
43:12Congratulations.
43:14Cheers.
43:15No worries.
43:16I'm over the moon.
43:17That's made my day.
43:20MG sold.
43:223600.
43:23I think it's really, really good.
43:25We've pretty much doubled our money on the car.
43:27But I'm, you know, I'm really excited for the young lad.
43:30He is going to have the whale of a time.
43:33If I'm over the moon, I'm actually a little bit emotional.
43:36What's going to happen next week?
43:37This is the hashtag is the hashtag, right?
43:38This is the hashtag is your hashtag.
43:39I'm sorry.
43:41We're going to go to the hospital.
43:43You can see you next week.
43:44It's honey, honey.
43:45I'm sorry.
43:46You're参加99-230.
43:47It's really nice.
43:48I'm sure you're a little bit of a habit.
43:49You're a little bit emotional.
43:51Yeah.
43:52I'm so you're a little bit of a habit.
43:53I think it's really different.
43:54I'm so you're a little bit of a habit.
43:55I hope you're a little bit more.
43:56Thank you,atured.
