A disturbing tale of evil set during the English Civil War. When Matthew Hopkins is appointed Witchfinder General by the Puritans under Cromwell, he is empowered to travel the countryside with his henchmen and collect a fee for each witch from whom he extracts a confession - a policy which is exploited to the full.

00:35:38Confess.
00:35:45He confessed. You heard him.
00:35:47I've heard nothing yet, Master Hopkins.
00:35:49Refresh Master Salter's memory, Stern.
00:35:57You heard him.
00:35:59You did, too.
00:36:06Witnesses.
00:36:08Get up, you fucking wicked!
00:36:21Get up!
00:36:21Get up!
00:36:43Get up!
00:36:43Come on, come on!
00:37:13You are all of you confessed idolaters.
00:37:22However, these proceedings shall be carried out through due process of law.
00:37:28What law demands, we shall satisfy.
00:37:31You will each be tied in a prescribed fashion and cast into the moat.
00:37:36Should you then sink, we will know that your confessions are false.
00:37:40If, on the other hand, you are seen to swim or float,
00:37:45then your confessions of witchcraft are proven beyond a doubt in the sight of God.
00:37:52And you will be withdrawn from the water and hanged by the neck until you are dead.
00:37:58You can't help me! No, who is it? I'm a child!
00:38:02And who'd want to make you pregnant, witch?
00:38:05Quiet! Stern, go on with your task.
00:38:24Oh, God help!
00:38:26Oh, God help!
00:38:28Oh, God help!
00:38:30Oh, my God.
00:39:00Hey, look. One of them's gone already.
00:39:12They swim. The mark of Satan is upon them.
00:39:16Give us a hand here. Come on.
00:39:18They must hang.
00:39:30She was innocent.
00:39:37God forgive you, Matthew Hopkins.
00:39:43Jailer, take them to the tree.
00:39:47The money from the magistrate. Nine guineas in silver.
00:40:08Good. Now we can leave.
00:40:10I must have seen them anymore.
00:40:24I'll know.
00:40:25Oh.
00:40:26Uh-huh.
00:40:26Huh?
00:40:28Huh?
00:40:29Come on.
00:40:59Good morning, soldier. Good morning.
00:41:02What will you be after in the way of horses, then, eh?
00:41:04A dozen or so for General Cromwell's armies up north.
00:41:06Well, lost a few, have you?
00:41:07Aye, at Cheriton Wood.
00:41:09That's a pretty sorry-looking bunch of old nags you got in there, friend.
00:41:12The best we could find.
00:41:13I have to do.
00:41:15A dozen, you say, eh?
00:41:16Aye.
00:41:17We'll be back in Suffolk soon, where, thank God, they still breed strong horses.
00:41:21Oh, I doubt you'll find much better there.
00:41:23I'm just back from those parts.
00:41:24The mounts up there are much like these.
00:41:26They've been through Branderston, a tall man.
00:41:28Branderston? Aye.
00:41:29On a fine commotion, they're staring up there.
00:41:31What? Are you taking their horses?
00:41:33No, nothing like that. A mass hanging.
00:41:35Who?
00:41:35Witches, I heard. Two women and a priest.
00:41:37Where was the priest from, man?
00:41:39From Branderston, I suppose.
00:41:40A brave old boy for all his white hairs.
00:41:42Was he a friend of yours?
00:41:44Two troopers, Gifford and Harcourt, will be here directly.
00:41:46Have them take these horses here back to the regiment and report that I'm delayed.
00:41:49I'll join them further north. Do you understand?
00:41:51Yes, but where will you be going?
00:41:52Hey, there!
00:41:52Hey, there!

00:43:45They took him and killed him. They said he was an idolater.
00:43:48I know. I heard.
00:43:51Sarah.
00:43:52One of them.
00:43:54The Witchfinder.
00:43:57He...
00:44:00He...
00:44:04I didn't want to.
00:44:08I thought I could save him.
00:44:13I thought they'd have pity.
00:44:21But they didn't have pity.
00:44:22The Witchfinder with choose.
00:44:27The Witchfinder.
00:44:33The Witchfinder.
00:44:36The Witchfinder.
00:44:38The Witchfinder.
00:44:39The Witchfinder.
00:44:41The Witchfinder.
00:44:42We kneel before thee, O Lord, in humility to ask for a blessing on our union.
00:45:00We ask for forgiveness of our sins and strength to lead righteous lives as man and wife.
00:45:12We pray also for the soul of thy servant John Lois, may he know eternal peace.
00:45:28And it is in thy sight, O Lord, that I hereby swear I shall not rest from the pursuit of
00:45:35his murderers until they stand before thee, ready to answer to thee for their sins.
00:45:42Now take this money and whatever you need from the rectory and go to Lavanagh, you'll be
00:46:01safe with that.
00:46:02I will, Richard.
00:46:03And stay there.
00:46:04I will come to you.
00:46:10I love you very much.
00:46:24I will come again.
00:46:31I will come back to Lavanagh.
00:46:37I will come back to Lavanagh.
00:46:44I will come back to the house.
00:46:47I will come back to Lavanagh.
00:48:57Oh, come on, Charlie. Give us a kiss.
00:48:59Oh, get away from me.
00:49:00Oh, stop it, you're dead, you rascal.
00:49:04Stop it.
00:49:05Here, I'll bet you two pennies.
00:49:09Hail, soldier.
00:49:10Aye.
00:49:11To wash the dust from my throat.
00:49:16Another one for you?
00:49:17Get a move on with it.
00:49:18He's got a powerful thirst still.
00:49:20Landlord, I'm looking for a man called Hopkins.
00:49:22I heard he was coming this way.
00:49:23Matthew Hopkins?
00:49:25Well, do you know where he is, friend?
00:49:26Ah, he's gone to Cambridge today.
00:49:28But you've got an accusation to make.
00:49:30I'll get your confession for you.
00:49:31I do the pricking, you know, not Matthew.
00:49:34I'm your man friend.
00:49:35John Stern, they call me.
00:49:36I'm a husband to Sarah Lowe's.
00:49:43Ah!
00:49:48Oh, you see that?
00:49:53No, no, no.
00:49:54You're doing something.
00:49:59Ah!
00:50:00Ah!
00:50:00Ah!
00:50:01Ah!
00:50:01Ah!

00:50:06You all right friend yeah, you better get out of here. Yeah, I'm going don't worry
00:50:24That's you soldier you are coming down to see the magistrate am I not with you
00:50:54Ah
00:51:24Ah
00:51:54Ah
00:52:24Oh
00:52:28Oh
00:52:44For God's sake Stern, what have you done? Who was that Richard Marshall? Who he's married to the girl Sarah?
00:52:50How did he find you he was looking for you he found out about Brandes and we're gonna have to separate
00:52:56I won't run from him. We have work to do down south in Labanham. Not me. He's after our blood
00:53:01Seems to me. He's already had some of yours. We're not gonna anymore. You understand you're forgetting our powers
00:53:07He could be a witch. He's a man who's out to kill both of us
00:53:10Then it appears to me that we should take steps to see to his death first come we travel to Labanham
00:53:20I
00:53:22I
00:53:45full well understand your feelings, Cornet. But you're an officer in the army, a soldier,
00:53:50and desertion is punishable by death. However, in this case, there are two factors which
00:53:55will stay me from subjecting you to a full court-martial. One, we are grouped here at
00:54:01Naseby in preparation for a major assault on the Royalist armies. We need every man we
00:54:05can get, and you're a pretty good soldier most of the time. Thank you, sir. Secondly,
00:54:12I would sleep ill if I had to send to the gallows a man who had saved my life. But Cornet, remember
00:54:18this. If you should leave your command again, I will have no alternative but to throw the
00:54:26whole weight of military law against you. Understand? Yes, sir. Dismiss, Cornet. And
00:54:37may God help you in your search. Cornet Marshal.
00:54:44Robert, hello. Richard, you're back. Hi. What happened with the captain? Nothing. I heard
00:55:06about Brandiston, Richard. Hopkins and Stern. I'll find them somewhere. But what can you do? What proof of you that they committed any crime?
00:55:14I got Sarah's word on it. Is that enough for the magistrates? There'll be no magistrates involved. What do you mean?
00:55:21We'll talk more later, Richard. We must be on our way. We're after horses for this skirmish that's coming up.
00:55:31It's coming up. All right. Up. Come on. Up.
00:55:48Parliament men. Comrades a friend, Marshal. There's some good ones coming now. Look. Hey! Let's make a run for it, shall we? While we can. Be calm. Yeah, but if they find out who we are, they'll... They won't. Come on. Come on.
00:55:50That's a fine horse. You've got there, friend. The army needs mounts of such calibre. I am not selling. But you've got to go.
00:55:57But you'll get your money when the war's over. You don't appear to understand. I am not selling. Oh, but you are selling, friend. And we'll take care of you.
00:56:04That's a fine horse you've got there, friend. The army needs mounts of such calibre. I am not selling. But you'll get your money when the war's over. You don't appear to understand. I am not selling. Oh, but you are selling, friend. And we'll take that one there, too.
00:56:27Take that one there, too. So you filthy soldiers can butcher my mare? Sergeant. He thinks we're filthy soldiers. Do you hear? Aye, I heard.
00:56:34You can't go saying things like that, friend. What he needs is a little army discipline. I hear you need more pikemen in your platoon, Sergeant. You pay for this.
00:56:57Good horse you had there. Cost a pretty penny, I reckon. We robbed the countenment. Ah, right jester, yes. Yeah, when the days fighting in Cromwell's army will soon cure your whip, my lad.
00:57:20Don't cure your whip, my lad. I am not doing any fighting either for the king or your precious Cromwell either. You mark that well, soldier.
00:57:26Oh, you coward. Just like a friend. Matthew Hopkins is no friend of mine. Hopkins? The fancy boy who just made a fool of your cavalry, comrade. You rode with him? I had reasons. He paid you? We were partners. In what business? Extermination. Eh? And what does that mean?
00:57:42You start me when I got a son? Ah!
00:57:45Get down!
00:57:47Oh!

01:00:38Master Webb
01:00:39Now I must find out
01:00:40How I can serve you
01:00:41They're all women sir
01:00:43Strange isn't it
01:00:45How much iniquity
01:00:46The Lord vested in the female
01:00:47Pardon sir
01:00:48Who makes the accusations
01:00:51Myself sir
01:00:52Representing the town
01:00:53How many
01:00:54Three sir
01:00:55And what age
01:00:56Two are young sir
01:00:57Elizabeth Clark and Mary Reynolds
01:00:59The others worn and old
01:01:00Fetch the young pair here to me
01:01:02What have the other had
01:01:04The old ones are more sensible
01:01:06It's the young ones
01:01:08Who are stubborn
01:01:09They require time
01:01:10I see
01:01:11Sir
01:01:14Yes ma'am
01:01:15Your assistant sir
01:01:16We were told he too
01:01:17Would be coming to Labanum
01:01:18He's engaged elsewhere
01:01:20He's fighting for the
01:01:21Parliamentary cause
01:01:22Oh
01:01:23He will be joining you here sir
01:01:25I really can't say
01:01:26You can manage without him
01:01:28Of course
01:01:29I apologize
01:01:30No
01:01:30Not only can I manage without him
01:01:33But I intend to instigate
01:01:35A new method of execution
01:01:36And you master well
01:01:37You shall aid me
01:01:39In carrying it out
01:01:40What's that sir
01:01:42You'll see
01:01:43It's a fitting end
01:01:46For the foul ungodliness
01:01:48In womankind
01:01:49Yes sir
01:01:50Now fetch that young pair here
01:01:53Of course
01:01:53An excellent meal gentlemen
01:02:09There is little I find so satisfying
01:02:15As good food
01:02:15After a well earned victory
01:02:17Wouldn't you agree
01:02:18Entirely general
01:02:19The conflict that may be so
01:02:20Will go down as a triumph
01:02:21Of your strategy
01:02:22Perhaps
01:02:23I would rather that it went down
01:02:25As a triumph
01:02:25For the forces of true godliness
01:02:27Nevertheless
01:02:27Your name will symbolize
01:02:29The victory sir
01:02:30Whether I like it or not
01:02:31Eh captain
01:02:32That cornet
01:02:43You so highly recommended to me

01:02:46General Cromwell
01:02:46Good
01:02:47Amongst the most
01:02:48Pleasurable aspects
01:02:50Of victory gentlemen
01:02:51Is the opportunity
01:02:52It affords
01:02:53To reward valour
01:02:54It rags almost
01:02:56With good food
01:02:56Cornet marshal sir

01:03:22Back into East Anglia
01:03:22The king has escaped us
01:03:25And is rumoured
01:03:26To be making for the Norfolk coast
01:03:27If that is the case

01:03:30Before he can escape

01:04:12Then I shall take
01:04:13Temporary leave again
01:04:14For God's sake
01:04:15Richard
01:04:15I know how you feel
01:04:16But to risk
01:04:17Court's marshal
01:04:18To kill parliament's
01:04:19Own appointees
01:04:20You'll be hanged yourself
01:04:22Robert
01:04:22I've taken an oath
01:04:25I won't break it
01:04:26It's madness
