00:00Gov. Mike Braun, along with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. this week, spoke on nine executive orders.
00:06One calling for Executive Order 2255, covering the topic of the SNAP program.
00:11They're asking the USDA to grant the state a waiver to restrict SNAP benefits from being used to purchase candy and soft drinks,
00:18using a specific state code definition, then possibly placing a broader waiver later in the year to restrict more in the future.
00:24The SNAP program is administered by the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 that can be used for any food or food product intended for human consumption,
00:32except alcohol, tobacco, and hot foods.
00:35Those who make $33,500 a year for three people can qualify for SNAP.
00:40When walking around Lafayette talking to folks about this issue, a mom and I talked about how she can't even afford Easter candy right now.
00:46She said it comes down to the health necessities versus what's luxurious.
00:50She's a mom of a big family, and affording anything right now is difficult.
00:53While she is not on the SNAP program, she's worried about the climate this might bring in.
00:58Star City News spoke with Executive Director of Feeding Indiana's Hungry, Emily Weikert Bryant,
01:03about more on what this means for the SNAP program.
01:06She says it's a destruction of this program and is worried not just for the people using the program,
01:11but the small retail stores around the area as well.
01:14Bryant stated,
01:14What we're looking at banning here are things that folks would be purchasing as sometimes food anyways.
01:19No one is looking to make a meal out of candy.
01:21It's more just disrupting the system.
01:24She said how the change we're looking at could be more costly to the state,
01:27and right now it's a tight fiscal climate.
01:29It's adding additional restrictions and barriers and administrative burdens.
