00:00All right, so this is a little bit offbeat, but the Tower of London, we visited that when we went to England a couple of years ago.
00:08The Tower of London's Queen Raven is missing and feared dead, according to the staff at the fortress.
00:16So apparently they keep this flock of ravens there.
00:20And I remember being there and saying they're huge.
00:22They're these big black birds.
00:23I remember seeing them.
00:24Yeah, yeah.
00:24I just thought they were, that's why they just kind of, you know, flew in and hung out.
00:28But apparently they have a...
00:30They cultivate them.
00:31Yeah, I was going to say they grow them there.
00:33They grow them there.
00:33But they...
00:34Get any of those crow seeds?
00:35The Tower usually has six ravens at any time.
00:38And according to legend, if they ever leave, then both the fortress and the kingdom will fall.
00:43Yes!
00:44There are currently seven...
00:46One, two, three, four, five, six...
00:48There are seven in residence.
00:50A spokesman said Marlena's continued absence indicates to us that she may have sadly passed away.
00:58So that's Marlena.
00:59She is the queen.
01:00It is the most great dress for us as Marlena has gone missing.
01:04As you know, the legend of the kingdom will fall if we do not have sand crows or presents at all times.
01:12So it is now that I must have formed.
01:15That's the best.
01:19That's disgusting.
01:21We need a different spokesperson.
01:23Who hired him?
01:26Yeah, time to retire, bro.
01:28There's always some kind of big mutton chops.
01:30Can we get a young guy?
01:33I'm 27.
01:37Taking care of these birds will age.
01:39He had Marlena was our undisputed ruler of the roost, queen of the Tower of Ravens.
01:45She will be greatly missed by her fellow Ravens, the Raven Master, and all of us here in the Tower community.
01:52But if you know Marlena, you know that's so, Raven.
01:57I believe the people that work at the Tower, I think they volunteer.
02:00I think they...
02:01I want to say I remember reading that.
02:05It was great.
02:06I really enjoyed going there.
02:07I'm a complete anglophile when it comes to this stuff.
02:08The royal family, the Tower, even though watching The Crown is so much fun.
02:11And listen, some people don't get it.
02:15I love it.
02:16It's a dated concept, but it's pretty cool.
02:19There's nothing wrong with that and embracing that and keeping that going.
02:22Yeah.
02:22Yeah, there are touristy spots in London that you'd think maybe are a little cheesy or whatever.
02:26This was not.
02:27I really enjoyed that tour.
02:28And I'd go back.
02:30The Crown Jewels are there.
02:31It was really cool.
02:32By the way, if you do want to see The Crown Jewels, my only one-time visit there, my recommendation,
02:36we got as soon as it opened.
02:37And it was the first place we went.
02:39And there was nobody there.
02:40Oh, you're putting on The Crown.
02:42We looked at out in front of where The Crown Jewels are is one of those back-and-forth switchback
02:49weight line things.
02:50And, you know, you could just by walking through that, we're like, okay, this could take forever
02:55on a busy day.
02:56But we got right in.
02:57It was very impressive.
02:59So I thought that was pretty cool.
03:02The Raven Master, Christopher Scaife, said that he would be taking some time to mourn Merlina.
03:09Tower staff added that they had no immediate plans to replace her.
03:14And Charles is believed to have been the first monarch to officially decree that the birds
03:21must be kept at the tower at all times.
03:24So one of them's gone.
03:25Oh, apparently when numbers fell to just a single Raven guard, Winston Churchill had ordered
03:31that the flock, which is known as an unkindness, that's a flock of ravens.
03:37An unkindness.
03:38Yes.
03:38It was increased to at least six.
03:40We want to increase the flock.
03:42Yes.
03:42In 2018, the tower launched.
03:44Get the flock out of here.
03:46A raven breeding program.
03:47Of course, quoting Little Weapon True.
03:50After his story.
03:51Of course.
03:52Yes.
03:52What did the shepherd say to the other shepherd?
03:54Winston Churchill was a visionary.
03:56Was it?
03:56Okay.
03:56That was in the first one, Winston.
03:58I'm sorry.
03:58I will have to throw that at you.
04:00But anyhow, it was becoming increasingly difficult to source the birds.
04:03And that's all I have time for, I guess, in my thing that I just did.
04:08What was it?
04:09The junk drawer.
04:09The junk drawer.
04:10And that wraps up tonight's thing that I just said.
04:13I'm Tom Brokaw.
04:15Let's call the news.
