00:01:14A capacity crowd expected of about 3,200, including many, many celebrities here at the Convention Center Ballroom on the boardwalk of Atlantic City, New Jersey.
00:01:28Tonight, in the main event, you'll see Evander Holyfield against former WBC heavyweight champion Pinklyn Thomas.
00:01:39Also tonight, it's former WBA heavyweight champ Michael Dokes against Rocky Sikorsky for the Continental America's heavyweight title.
00:01:48Hello again, everybody. Steve Albert, along with the fight, Dr. Ferdinand Pacheco.
00:01:54Welcome to another edition of Showtime Championship Boxing.
00:01:56Originally, this card was scheduled for October the 14th.
00:01:59It had to be postponed until tonight because of an eye infection to Pinklyn Thomas.
00:02:03But we're set. The main event, Evander Holyfield against Pinklyn Thomas.
00:02:07Holyfield off the successful heavyweight debut over James Quick-Tillis.
00:02:11But most people think of Holyfield as a cruiserweight and a light heavyweight.
00:02:15But now he's fighting as a heavyweight.
00:02:18And the question persists, does he have what it takes against a legitimate heavyweight in Pinklyn Thomas?
00:02:25Well, he took the first step against Tillis, admittedly a failing heavyweight, very well.
00:02:30This step is a lot more important.
00:02:32He has proven that he's got a heavyweight punch.
00:02:34He has proven that he can take a heavyweight distance.
00:02:38He can go well with a heavyweight.
00:02:39Now let's see what he does when he gets into a very hard-punching and fast Pinklyn Thomas.
00:02:44Well, Ferdy, the weight issue has indeed become a weighty issue.
00:02:47He was 2-0-2 in his heavyweight debut last July.
00:02:49He comes in tonight at 2-10.
00:02:51And, of course, Pinklyn Thomas comes in at 2-22.
00:02:54So he's got a 12-pound weight advantage.
00:02:56What kind of a factor is that?
00:02:57Now, in the heavyweight, that doesn't make any difference.
00:02:59Holyfield has been gaining the real weight, muscle mass, not fat.
00:03:02You just can't gain weight to become a heavyweight.
00:03:04That's legitimate weight.
00:03:06The disparity between the two won't make any difference.
00:03:08Thomas has not fought in about a year and a half when he lost to Mike Tyson.
00:03:12Inactivity.
00:03:13That's got to be a big factor.
00:03:14Now, that is the factor.
00:03:16Ring rust in an older fighter, and Pinklyn Thomas at 31 is an older fighter,
00:03:21is significant when you're in with a young, strong, and very fast Evander Holyfield.
00:03:25So that may be the key to this fight.
00:03:28So that, Ferdie, is our main event.
00:03:30Holyfield against Thomas.
00:03:31You'll be seeing, first, Rocky Sikorsky challenging against Michael Dokes, the former WBA heavyweight champion.
00:03:39And I guess the best thing you can say about Sikorsky at this stage is that Dokes knows absolutely nothing about his background or style.
00:03:45That's amazing, also.
00:03:47He just doesn't care.
00:03:48He's fighting one fight after another to try to get himself back into shape.
00:03:52This is probably the final fight that Dokes fights before he gets into real competition,
00:03:57because up to now, the competition has been shaky.
00:04:01But then again, Dokes was coming from point zero.
00:04:04He had to come all the way back.
00:04:05He is almost back.
00:04:07Let's see tonight whether he's back 100%.
00:04:09And Ferdie, as far as his opponent is concerned, Michael Dokes, he is coming off a drug problem.
00:04:16He's making his way into the ring to fight this man, Rocky Sikorsky.
00:04:20He's 7-0 since the start of the comeback.
00:04:24But the important question is, has he improved with each comeback fight?
00:04:28Well, he had to improve.
00:04:29He came back from ground zero, as we say.
00:04:31He had had a heavy narcotic addiction.
00:04:33Just to get back in the ring and fight these repetitive fights
00:04:37was a heroic, heculean effort on the part of Michael Dokes.
00:04:40Now he's got his timing back.
00:04:42Now he looks a little bit better.
00:04:44Let's see if this fight against maybe a few-degree better fighter than he has fought
00:04:49will show us that Dokes is ready for top competition.
00:04:52Man of the cowboy hat is the man affectionately called Pops.
00:04:56Dokes, 91-year-young, manager and financial advisor.
00:05:01He's the youngest 91-year-old Marty Cohen in the world.
00:05:05You got that right.
00:05:06Michael Dokes has turned his life around dramatically since his bout with cocaine.
00:05:10And now at the age of 30, he is back in the top 10.
00:05:13But it wasn't long ago Dokes was sitting on top of the heavyweight division.
00:05:17It was almost exactly six years ago to the day, December 10, 1982,
00:05:23when Michael Dokes shocked the boxing world, putting Mike Weaver to the canvas in the first round at Las Vegas.
00:05:31He eventually went on to stop Weaver to capture the WBA Heavyweight Championship.
00:05:38Dokes successfully defended against Weaver.
00:05:42But only nine months later, with Dokes stepping into the ring under the influence of cocaine,
00:05:48he lost the title to South African Jerry Coetzee.
00:05:51Dokes admits today what a costly, costly mistake he made.
00:05:57I realized how detrimental it was becoming for me.
00:06:08Another thing I realized that the people that I love so much and the people that love me,
00:06:12how much I was hurting them.
00:06:15I think that was one of the things that devastated me the most.
00:06:19I never realized that I affected so many other people.
00:06:22I always thought it was just me.
00:06:23And I looked at that with tunnel vision.
00:06:27And then my scope broadened, and I realized that thing.
00:06:31And also, man, I was facing 20 years, too.
00:06:36Ferdy talked to Dokes' manager, 91-year-old Marty Cohn.

00:06:41He is now 110% from where he was when he fought Coetzee.
00:06:50Because his only loss in his life as a pro was to CO, Coetzee.

00:10:07So Michael Dynamite talks in his eight-fight back since shaking the cocaine realm, going to a drug rehab center, and feels that he has a new lease on life.
00:10:20Michael believes in the power of his jab.
00:10:22He's had one of the strongest, fastest jabs before he got into the cocaine maze.
00:10:27And starting off, he's depending on it.
00:10:30Sikorsky's got to believe in positive thinking and the power of prayer
00:10:34because he has not fought anyone quite like Michael Dokes.
00:10:38He got knocked out by Foreman in five and did beat an over-the-hill Leon Spinks a few years ago.
00:10:45Dokes, one of the fastest rising stars in the heavyweight division in the early 80s,
00:10:51KO'd by cocaine for about three years, the prime of his career.
00:10:55Feels he has improved with each comeback, especially with his speed and quickness.
00:11:01He's very cocky.
00:11:02He's keeping his left hand down as Dokes.
00:11:06As he did when he was a young man with great lightning-like flexes.
00:11:10Only now he's 30 and he's not that fast.
00:11:12And he's getting hit by Rocky Sikorsky, a fact which never would have happened to the younger Michael Dokes.
00:11:19And keep in mind, Dokes, in 39 professional fights, still only one defeat.
00:11:25Now back to Jerry Coetzee.
00:11:27He won the title from Mike Weaver in 82, defended once against Weaver,
00:11:31then lost it to Coetzee 10 months after he had won the crown.
00:11:36So a 10-month reign back in 83 as the WBA heavyweight champ.
00:11:41He's back in the top 10.
00:11:43He's ranked eighth by the WBC.

00:14:10And he's built like some kind of tree trunk.
00:14:13Looks like a young Tony Valendo from the 30s.
00:14:16Those kind of thick guys that you hate to meet in an hour.
00:14:19Now, of course, he's corner.
00:14:22Dokes opens up.
00:14:25Keep your punches up.
00:14:26A flustering attack by Dynamite Dokes just above us.
00:14:30And the ref says keep your punches up to Dokes.
00:14:32Dokes landed him.

00:14:34That's another one of those armed right hands.
00:14:36A roundhouse right by Sikorsky.
00:14:39And it landed.
00:14:44But he has been scoring with that punch.
00:14:48Well, he's certainly not scared of Dokes' punch.

00:14:52He almost disregards it as he comes in.
00:14:56He is not intimidated at all by the fact that he's fighting a former world champion.

00:15:05And then he forwards the move with a sizzling right.
00:15:09Oh, what a shot by Sikorsky.
00:15:13That right is going to be there all night as long as Dokes keeps his left hand down by his waist.
00:15:18I mean, in the old days, that would have missed because he would have moved his head.
00:15:23But it's now 1988.
00:15:25Dokes is standing right in front of him.
00:15:27No movement.
00:15:28And his hand down.
00:15:29So that right hand is going to be coming off the temple of Dokes all night if Sikorsky chooses to throw it.
00:15:35Now Dokes with Sikorsky in the corner.
00:15:38He connects with the left.
00:15:41And Sikorsky able to punch his way out and spins Dokes around.
00:15:46Yeah, trapping Dokes in the corner was not a good idea.
00:15:48He got himself a good uppercut for his trouble.
00:15:53Now the question is going to be, if Sikorsky keeps taking all this punishment,
00:15:57will Dokes be able to dish it out as these rounds come on?
00:16:00All that heavy, arconic usage for many, many years has an effect that's deleterious for a long fight.
00:16:08I mean, you get weak.
00:16:10Can he keep it up?
00:16:11Can Dokes keep up this intensity?
00:16:14Of course, he's just searching around Dokes.
00:16:22Well, this is the kind of fight Dokes needs.
00:16:24If he survives this fight, this is the kind of fight he needs to get him here fighting in shape.

00:16:36What I see right now, he is certainly a mile away from Mike Tyson.

00:27:35And Sikorski buckled a little bit there under the pressure of the Michael Dokes.

00:27:44Well, either Sikorski can take a terrific punch, or Dokes doesn't have that much punch left,
00:27:49because he has been pummeling him with effective punches.
00:27:53And Sikorski's still standing and still coming back with that right hand.

00:28:07And I think he is just showing caution to the wind here.

00:28:28And Sikorski seems to be tiring here in the final seconds of round five,
00:28:33maybe running out of steam after throwing all those big rights.
