During an event in the Oval Office on Wednesday, President Donald Trump spoke about Canada's election.
Transcript
00:00A lot about it. Thank you for the question.
00:01A second question.
00:04Canada has an election coming up.
00:05Do you have a prediction for that?
00:07And what do you think the results of that?
00:08With respect to Canada?
00:09With the negotiations?
00:10Oh, I don't want to predict other nations' elections.
00:14It's tough enough doing this one.
00:18Look, I love the Canadian people.
00:21I like Canada.
00:22But it's costing us $200 billion a year to support Canada.
00:27$200 billion.
00:28And I say, why are we doing that?
00:31You know what?
00:31We can make our own cars.
00:33We have more energy than they do.
00:35We have more energy than anybody in the world.
00:37We don't need their lumber, obviously.
00:39We have more lumber.
00:41We have a lot of lumber.
00:42We have a lot of everything that they sell us.
00:45But in particular cars, they took a large percentage of the car making,
00:49and I want to bring it back to this country.
00:50I really don't want cars from Canada.
00:53So when I put tariffs on Canada, they're paying 25%,
00:56but that could go up in terms of cars.
01:00When we put tariffs on, all we're doing is we're saying,
01:03we don't want your cars in all due respect.
01:07We want, really, to make our own cars,
01:09which is what we're doing in record numbers.
01:11Now, you know, we're going to be at record levels in a very near future
01:14because of all the plants, the car plants that are being built.
01:17And I'd rather see them made in Michigan and made in South Carolina
01:21and made in different states.
01:23Tennessee, we have a lot of great car making states,
01:28and we have some that aren't car making yet,
01:29but they will soon be car making states.
01:32And that's what I want to see for our country.
01:35At the same time, I want to help Canada.
01:38As to, I have spoken to the current prime minister.
01:42He was very, very nice, I will say.
01:44We had a couple of very nice conversations, very good.
01:47But I don't think it's appropriate for me
01:50to get involved in their election.
