00:042025 also marks 110 years since the Waratah March, which began in Nowra,
00:13gathering volunteers for war service along its way to Sydney. Most of those who volunteered
00:19departed Australia in 1916 and joined the 1st Battalion of the AIF as reinforcements
00:24and fought at the Battle of Poziere. Charles Bean wrote that Poziere Ridge is more densely
00:30sown with Australian sacrifice than any other place on earth. Australian forces suffered over
00:3723,000 casualties in the battle. A fifth of the volunteers of the 1915 Waratah March from Nowra
00:44were killed on the Western Front.
